Its So Logical!
I was given this book when both my children were in their early elementary school years. I read it cover to cover and couldn't believe how easy and logical it was. Taking the words from the title "logical consequences" says it all.

We must raise our children to be responsible for their actions. Letting them suffer the consequences of their actions is much more effective then ever raising a hand.

It does take some strength for a parent to let their children make mistakes, however, your child will not forget and probalby will not duplicate his/her mistake again.

I am very proud of what each of my children have become. They have the character, compassion and moral fiber that is so lacking in the world today. I thank God for the day "The New Approach to Discipline: "Logical Consequences" was handed to me. It became my bible. Every parent should read it.

An excellent way to discipline while minimizing the anger.
This is one of the best books I have read on child discipline. I read it while raising my children and put it to the test of practical day to day situations. It worked. For the most part the examples provided the desired response and reduced the stress of both parent and child. You can easily adapt it to your own family style.

A classic that has stood the test of time
What amazed me about this book is how down-to-Earth it is. It was originally published more than 50 years ago, yet it does not read like a manual from a bygone era, with no relevance to today. It simply talks about what most people in marriage are trying to achieve, and the very real challeneges that come at them and that they put before themselves. It doesn't preach and it doesn't propose to have all the answers. And Chapter 4, "Choosing a Mate", should be required reading for everyone.

A concise how-to care for child discipline with workbook
The authors quickly tell the reader the logic and history of their child discipline recommen- dations. They show ways to recognize and type problems - then how to care for them in a respectful and democratic way. The included workbook with answers resolves any questions. A book to read and keep for future reference. Added value; with a little insight the principals cited can be used by any group leader/supervisor. The recommendations really work!

Great help and counseling for parents of infants/toddlers
I have read several books about 'early learning and development' of children and have discovered some points in common. All these books encourage parents to start to develop children's capabilities as soon as possible (1 year is better than 2 year-old, 6 months is much better and 1 month! is really MUCH MUCH better). Don't be fooled by thinking that this 'little thing' is unable to hear you, see you or understand you. He/she really does and his fast-pace growing brain stores all you teach him (good or bad). You can teach your child absolutely whatever you want, because the child's brain is developing an incredible rate. The training you provide him/her helps to create more synaptic connections that later will lead to greater ability to reason and memory. Don't think your baby is not getting the 'training' you provide him/her. No matter if you teach maths / reading /languages / music /computing sciences or whatever other subject. The important point is to do it always respecting the children and being conscious that the (quality) time that we spend with our children is the most precious and well-invested time we can share with them. Dinkmeyer and Dreikurs use the approach shown in 'Children the challenge' to improve paths of communication with children, letting the message of love, respect and courage get through. 'Encouraging Children to Learn' complements other classics by Doman like (how to teach maths... or How to teach your baby to read), books that should be in the shelves of all homes where lives a child.

A "must have" book for every classroom teacher.
This book should be a requirement for every teachers ed program. It talks to evry discipline problem that may be encountered, from the ordinary to the severe. It is more applicable to the elementary level than to the secondary level. As a school counselor, I gave it to my daughter as she began her teaching career.

Children: The Challenge
I am a 47 year old mother of three sons. I was given this book many years ago by a friend and I have recommended it many times. It is a practical, easy to follow concept: Help your children make wise choices and live with the consequences! It eliminates the power struggle between parent (authority) and child (rebellion). You help explain their choices, possible outcomes of those choices, and what you will or will not do in any given situation. For example, "I cannot drive this car with so much shouting. If you continue to shout (argue) I will stop the car". If shouting persists, stop the car and get outside until everything is quiet. A few stops like this and all you need to do is put on the turn signal. They learn that if they choose to argue and make noise in the car, the car will stop. One son decided he did not like his winter coat the first day it was cold enough to wear it. I said, "ok" and didn't push the issue. However, when he arrived at school, he wasn't allowed outside for recess. The next day he took the coat and never complained about it again. BUY THIS BOOK.

Raise your kids on this book.
My son was about 2 1/2 years old when I found "Children the Challenge" in a box of books I bought at auction. I started reading it and realized it put into words things I felt but couldn't articulate. All the things I said I wouldn't do to my children ( and found myself doing because my parents did ) I was able to change almost overnight! I guided 3 preteen step-children from wild uncontrolled children to at least respecting ( becaused they were respected ) and more coopertive members of our family. My son was raised on this book -- succesfully. Today, he is 15 years old, we are very close, he is very loving, and 97% of the time way talk our way through our problems. My mother, though all of this said most of what I was doing wouldn't work, but every 6-12 months she says how pride she is of him and what a good job I'm doing ( we've see her weekly all his life ). I've been a single mother for the last 8 years and I've kept his father very involved in his life ( don't fight-using the kids. READ THE BOOK ! ) This book really is the best. Two years ago my father checked Amazon.com for the book ( I couldn't find copies of it anywhere else, ( lost my original book when I loaned it to a co-worker)), and I ordered two copies, one for me and a friend. I'm going to order more for gifts ! I thank God I found it again. Questions ? E-mail me Chewbacca-wooky@juno.com

Great for dealing with children of all ages!
When we decided to start trying to have a family, my husband and I bought this book on the recommendation of my father and older brother and his wife. My brother is raising three darling and happy daughters who are delightful to be around. My husband has told me he's going to be able to use some of the things we're reading in this book to improve relations with some people he works with. So it's not just little kids who could benefit from these techniques...

One reader mentioned some of the examples are a little out of date, and that's true. But it isn't hard to figure out the modern equivalent.

My father says this book was his bible when he and my mom were raising me and my siblings. He recommended my brother re-read a chapter or two every week, just to keep the ideas fresh. I know when ever they have a problem, they pull out the book.
