Practical, Innovative
Well beyond theory - this is obviously the work of the men who have done it. Chocked full of stories, examples, checklists, work plans, and wisdom. If you are thinking about gainsharing or participative management - get this, read it, and use it to guide your work.

Excellent " how to " and " why" cookbook for managers
Managers, entrepeneurs, ceo s , cfo s, and consultants will appreciate this book as a prac- tical and well-explained series of methods for creating and implementing gain sharing and/or variable pay programs. More than any other book on the subject this will be a clear explana- tion of gain sharing and variable pay. It is clear, well-written, concise and yet far reaching in its analysis and down to earth examples of what has worked and what has not worked at places that have tried gain sharing management.

You will not want to discard this book during the time you are implementing a gain sharing or variable pay program. As I management con- sultant I often refer to it in my seminars and on-site consultations. Mike Pavilon, Chicago

John Ishee, A Man
I was a patient at Cumberland heights back in the 90's. I was afraid of God. My addiction took me to places where I knew thre was a GOD but did no believe he wanted anything to do with me. This book introduced me to GOD, not as a damning GOD But a GOD that loves me unconditionally. I recommend it to anybody trying to find faith, not just recoveryong addicts/alcoholics. I have had the priviledge of getting to know Dr Ishee as a man, I have not seen him in over a year. I know that if I walked in his office tomorrow that he would probably remeber my name and we could talk about anything as if I ssaw him the day before. He brought me back to GOD and I believe it is stated in this book. I told Dr Ishee that I believe in GOD but do not think he wanted anything to do with me, I was a lost cause. Dr Ishee asked "Mark do you have Children?" I said I have a son. Dr Ishee then asked "Do you love your son, no mater what ever mistakes he will make in his life?". I said I do, no matter what mistakes he will ever make. Dr Ishee said" That is exactly how GOD loves you, unconditionally, you are his son". It has been 6 years since DR Ishee had that talk with me but I do think about that everyday.Mark Baker

Spirituality in Recovery
I had the privilege of meeting John Ishee at Cumberland Heights rehab center in Nashville. He is truly an inspiration. His book has very simple steps to follow to have a full, spiritual life.

The earliest Lost World tale of dinosaurs in modern times.
This book is one of a number of Professor Challenger adventures of Sir A. C. Doyle. A noted zoologist (Challenger) has come across evidence that there is a plateau in South America that can be reached from deep in the Amazon rain forest in which prehistoric animals still exist. An expedition of four (Challenger, a sceptical zoologist named Summerlee, a noted hunter (Lord John Roxton), and Edward Malone, a journalist) sets out to verify this report. The arguing and interactions between the academics is interesting in that little seems to have changed in the last 87 years! It should be noted that Doyle isolates the plateau so that there is minimal interaction with the rest of the rain forest (thus, the dinosaurs can't escape). But, why couldn't the ptereodactyls spread out? This story was one of the earliest "Lost World" tales and has been made into a film a number of times. Other stories in this sub-genre owe much to Doyle and Challenger.

First and one of the best
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created a classic dinosaur adventure story when he wrote The Lost World in 1912. The tale's narrator, Ned Malone is a newspaper reporter who joins an expedition to the wilds of the Amazon to impress his girlfriend. However, he scarcely anticipates the dangers he will confront when the expedition's leader, zoology professor George Challenger takes them to a plateau filled with dinosaurs and ape men.
Doyle's human characters are described much more richly than Michael Crichton's minimally interesting protagonists in Jurassic Park (1990), so the story hinges as much on Challenger's eccentricities as it does on dinosaur attacks or Ned Malone's quest for validation of his masculine bravado. A weakness is the lack of female characters worthy of more than passing note. Ned's fickle and heartless girlfriend makes only brief and displeasing appearances at the beginning and end of the tale. Crichton does no better with females.
Hopp's Dinosaur Wars, published in 2000, does a much better take on genders, giving equal weight to a young male/female pair who brave the dangers of dinosaurs loose in modern-day Montana. It seems that even dinosaur fiction has evolved over the years.

A Victorian "Jurassic Park"
Professor Challenger, a protagonist as unique and eccentric as Sherlock Holmes, "challenges" the London Zoological Society to send a team of impartial judges to verify his claims that dinosaurs live on a plateau in the Brazilian rain forest. Professor Summerlee, a staunch foe of Challenger, accepts the challenge. Lord John Roxton, a soldier and big game hunter, agrees to go along, and Edward Malone, a star rugby player and journalist, goes as their scribe.

The world they find is every bit as captivating as Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, and the danger is every bit as exhilarating. The characters are more engaging, and the story contains a good deal of humor as the four strong personalities clash a number of times on a number of levels.

There are no velociraptors to menace the adventurers, who have become hopelessly marooned, but a tribe of ape men serves quite well to provide the danger. It is a pleasure to have the English language used so well in describing the adventures of the four.

"The Lost World" is obviously the inspiration for Crichton's "Jurassic Park." Crichton may have modernized the story, but he certainly didn't improve it. Unfortunately, "The Lost World" reflects the ethnic insensitivity and "classism" of the Victorian Era, but if you can overlook that flaw, you will thoroughly enjoy the story.

Must not be the only book about networking you have
This book brings uncountable information not only about network operating systems, but also about network hardware. It is very easy to be read. But if you really want to learn about networks, this must not be the only book to buy, of course. Since it is written in an easy language, it can be read not only by the ones who already works with networking, but also by the ones who are willing to enter this field.

An excellent book, but not for everybody
This book provides an excellent treatment of network fundementals from the perspective of a person designing or repairing networks. It is a good book for a person with little or no network experience.

However, there are limitations to the book that are not apparent from the description. First, the book is primarily about Novell networks. If you are looking for an in-depth treatment of other networks, this is not the book for you. Second, the specific hardware and software recommendations are few and far between for a book of this type.

I recommend this book for people wanting to learn about installing and repairing networks, particularily Novell networks. Just be aware of its limitations.

Worth the extra effort to obtain
This book has left a bizarre legacy. Que's "Upgrading and Repairing Networks, Second Edition" is written by a different author (Terry Ogletree, though it bears Scott Mueller's name in significantly larger type), and its true sequel ("Upgrading and Troubleshooting Networks" by Craig Zacker) is published by Osborne. One can only imagine the intrigue that gave birth to these two rival heirs, and one can only wish that such events had not taken place, as this book is far better than either of its descendents.

Though a few years past its prime, Craig Zacker and Paul Doyle's "Upgrading and Repairing Networks" remains one of the best, broadest, most authoritative and most comprehensive guides to local area networking in print. Published prior to the certification frenzy, this book was designed to teach the journeyman technician both the theory and practice needed to perform effectively in a crisis situation. Subjects covered range from "the stuff in every book" (like the OSI model, hardware, and a plus/minus analysis of operating systems) to arcane but incredibly useful information for those new to the care and feeding of LANs (such as a chapter each on UPSes and tape drives).

I strongly urge beginners to the networking field to put in the extra effort necessary to get this book; its scope all but guarantees that you'll learn new and valuable information, and its tone and style make this knowledge fairly painless to obtain. Seasoned networking professionals might also consider picking this one up (especially at marketplace prices)... that is, if the copy they've relied on since 1996 has worn out.

Even Wild Women Get the Blues...
You MUST read this book! Paul Doyle has written a fantastic book filled with adventure, humor and wit. He is very funny as he pokes fun at the dogma of political, spiritual and environmental correctness while he effectively underlines the values that dogma intended to support. He clearly loves the Pacific Northwest rainforest he describes in fine detail. No matter if you have been there or not you will see it in it's glory and feel the love and respect he has for the natural world. I loved Nioka. I wanted to be Nioka. And I must admit, I have always hoped that Bigfoot really exists and continues to elude capture.

Amazin' book for Dynamic Flash
This is one of the best books you would ever find on dynamic flash that is if you find any other book on that topic.First there are very limited books on individual topics like generator or asp-flash but this books goes a step ahead and collaborates all the aspects of dynamic studio .chapters like ultradev,generator,asp-flash and Flash-turbine .A must read for all those people who are interested in making dynamic websites. They should refer to this book as it would make their work very easy. The book starts off by taking into consideration that the reader is a beginer and then graduates to more advanced topics.

Hats off !! to all those who made this book possible as this book is goin to be there for a long time to come.

Finally, a Flash book with substance!
An excellent book! Well worth the investment! It transitions well from more basic concepts to more complex topics -- With lots of substance for people at all levels of experience. Even those with more expertise can learn a thing or two from the different conceptual approaches presented. The book is not just about "here's how to do the same old boring X, Y & Z, just in the updated version of Flash", it also says "here's some different ways of thinking about solutions that takes greater advantage of new features of Flash". I also really enjoyed the mini math and geometry lessons... it's good to know that years of high school algebra and geometry could be put to some use!

The interface design chapters were particularly outstanding; judging by how awful so many Flash sites are at integrating interactivity, PLEASE!! I BEG YOU!!! everybody read the chapters on designing interfaces! They are a "must read" for anyone who wants to improve their site's interactivity.

The game design chapters are also incredibly helpful as well, and I think are some of the first useful explanations of game design I've ever seen for Flash. Even if you're not designing games in Flash, using a familiar game like Asteroids as a vehicle for explaining some pretty clever design elements works very well. Not to mention, it's very cool to be able to make your own video games! Flash isn't just for dull corporate websites anymore!

I'll be incorporating the lessons learned from those chapters into all the stuff I do... even though I only get to do very boring stuff for a corporate site. And if I use what this book teaches, maybe someday I can get hired to make games and do cool interfaces!!! :)

the Missing LINK (backend)
I've been looking for a books for backend for over a year now. This is the PHP, ASP, PERL, JavaScript, Generator, PHP Turbine dream book! 1000 pages of MUST-KNOW knowledge for the serious flash designer/developer. The PHP section is what I've been searching for for months as I've been stumbling through integration for a month now.

This will become the "BIBLE for BACKEND" (sounds sexual, I guess) Flash. Flash IS the future. This is the book I will refer to most for the next year... guaranteed. my "most advised purchase" to date for Flash Developers. Better than Flash 5 Magic at describing Backend application integration.

This will set you apart from the hacks.

Rushed into hardcopy
QUE must have pushed this book into print. As other reviewers have noted, one has to have dogged determination and stamina to digest this book. It presents a confusing, unrelated and diverse array of "my pet way do it" by several authors. The examples on the CD are pathetic - all lumped into one directory, no readme file(s), incomplete and therefore not runnable as-is. Example: to extract the files related to Ch 9 required sifting through the entire chapter, and then register.htm and its CGI backend were conspicuously missing. However, after bludgeoning my way through most of the book, I have extracted a small number of gems that are actually useful in real-life projects. The CD contains this whole book plus two others in HTML format. A nice idea, but each one is disorganized by a totally different team of people. There is no unified 'look-n-feel' and navigation is painful in all three books. Good as a reference, shop for it 2nd hand (and pay only what it is worth).

Be patient, and it'll pay off
When I bought this book, I had absolutely no serious programming background. I was pretty accomplished in HTML, but nothing advanced. At first, the book was a bit hard. But the technique that I found helpful is to re-read each section (or each topic). I haven't even looked on the CD yet, and I'm learning loads about Perl. Also, reading this book really helps one understand some more advanced Perl tutorials on the web. It doesn't get 5 stars though, because the reader has to really be committed. This isn't a light read: get in the thinking mood when you read it.

Very good if you want to make websites using Perl/CGI
I've read at least 6 books on perl, but if you want to specifically learn perl for websites, then this book is very good. It talks about databases (DBMs and SQL). Managing sessions and validating users, and it also talks about creating a shopping cart system. There is a chapter on CGI sercurity. Although the book was written in 1996 its a very good step in the right direction of making good, reliable CGI applications. In fact, compared to other CGI books printed in 96, this book is years ahead of them.
