Trenchant Probings of Subcultural Folly
Oops, that summary makes me sound like one of Crawford's characters (NOT a self-compliment). But that's only fair, as his art functions best as a mirror in which we in the supposed "underground" (which term has lost most of its meaning since these cartoons first appeared) can laugh and wince at our own absurdity. His grotesque drawings and ripsaw wit make mincemeat of everything lame and pretentious about the musical/political "subcultures" that festered around the SF Bay and in fact most coastal cities. (By refraining from Goya comparisons, can I avoid sounding like Crawford's character Art Hefty? Hope so.)

Many people objected to his attacking already marginalized groups, comparable to stomping a paraplegic, and largely sparing more deserving targets in mainstream society. But, I think he detected a certain precious, self-congratulatory arrogance on the part of these (largely) declasse, parent-supported hipster frauds. And his spindly, ink-clotted caricatures and lacerating prose gave these parasites a kicking they won't soon forget. And which they had previously been exempt from.

Every movement needs antibodies to fight the rot and sanctimony that eventually turn all "avant gard" cabals into impotent, mutual-admiration societies. Crawford provides such healthful abuse, leavened with rip-cracking humor and a supple penline. Many of his targets are still around, still doing their clownish damage, so buy this book as soon as possible.

And relax--it's not nearly as solemn as I've made it sound.

The true story at last!
The subtitle of this book tells it all -- THE TRUE STORY OF THE APPALACHIAN MURDER THAT INSPIRED ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR BALLADS. The author has done meticulous research into the murder of Laura Foster which was popularized by the Kingston Trio. He uses court records, newspaper accounts, and other documents to authenticate his findings about her murder and the trial, conviction, and execution of Tom Dooley. I have read many accounts of the crime, but none were so well documented, and this time I feel that I have an understanding of what really happened. The reader gets to know not only the facts of the case, but also the central figures, their families and neighbors, and the law and court officials. The background information also provides a picture of life in the foothill of North Carolina during the second half of the nineteenth century.

Even though the account sometimes reads like a history book and gets bogged down with details, it is a fascinating book and should be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in history and who has ever hummed along with "The Ballad of Tom Dooley."

Find something better
While this book helped to review the topics for the AP Physics examination, the explanations were non-existant. The practice tests were very similar to the real questions on the test, however, in the answer key, the explanations made no sense, not telling you which equations to use, or why. I would recommend the Princeton Review Physics study guide over this one any day. There are a lot better review guides available than this one, I could have done better on the exam having only used the textbook.

Not the best...
So, also when it is not the Ap-test now and I did not work through the whole book, I worked myself through most of it and now have to say that this surely is not the best buy. There are no tips on how to take the test (they are helpful also when not necessary), there are nop divisions between what is Physics B and what is Physics C, what is very bad and confusing. But the worst is that it is written very dry and does not help to explain the material very well. An shocking example for me is: "Some potential differences must be positive and some negative" this is given with Kirchhoff's rules and that is all. There is NO further explanation of what some is, so confusing you, and in the best case just not helping you, because you need to find out what "Some" actually is. these bad explanation mistakes are made throughout the whole book. I would buy this book only when taking physics C (because you need to know everything in this book) and when you know the stuff pretty well and just try to refresh the memory. Also when I did not have any other books, I think that taking your chances with a different choice might be in your best interest.

Great book
Helped me review eveything for final exam. Better than the school text book.

A Useless Book
This book had an insane number of errors, including incorrect formulae, incomplete questions and inconsistent answers. Not only that, but the "Practice Tests" were not anything like a true sample MCAT would be. Many questions tested irrelevant detail that would never be tested in this form on a real MCAT (e.g. "A midsagittal section will divide the body into: A. equal superior and inferior portions. B. equal lateral portions. C. equal anterior and posterior portions. D. unequal lateral portions.") Some of the Verbal Reasoning passages were on science topics--the true MCAT would never have science topics in that section. And even the writing prompts for the Writing Sample section are wrong! This book was a total waste of my money.

A horrible book
I found this book to be quite useless. It was poorly written and filled with editorial errors. Furthermore, the supposed "sample MCATs" did not at all resemble the actual test. Oftentimes, the science passages in the book were little more than a paragraph. In addition, the book stressed unimportant trivia while overlooking vital concepts.

inaccurate representation of the real mcat
the book doesn't even have organic chem questions! so biological sciences were just biology!!! and obscure biology w/ alot of terminology that you'll never need for the mcat! the science passages are far from the real mcat...everything is too easy!
