Excellent material on the early Irish history

This text is a crucial element in the genealogical history of many old Irish and Scotish families (who can trace their roots to Ireland). This text includes the Latin, Gaelic and English translations of the original books. Although the beginning volumes were written about 500 to 1000 years after the events occurred, the stories that one finds included there are fascinating, and add to any family history (provided you can trace back that far!) a depth that is difficult to find elsewhere. I post a web site that traces the roots of the Buchanan clan, and have used a copy of the text available from the NY Public Library as one of my sources. Numerous individuals have e-mailed me asking for sources to purchase this text, and it would be helpful if it would be reprinted. For now, ask your local library to get the book for you on interlibrary loan from the NY Public Library (or others). Needless to say, I highly recommend this text and would be the first to purchase it if it were reprinted.

'The Annals of the Four Masters' is one of the most important documents for students of Irish, British, European and ancient history. You will not find much of this history in your high school or even college text books. John O'Donovan, a 19th century antiquarian undertook the enormous task of interpreting this account of Irish history as written in gaelic by the Four Masters, legendary scribes from a Donegal monastery. On the left hand page you get the original gaelic text, on the right the english translation, some anecdotes are in Latin. The anecdotes are as rich in reading as the text and include some by the late 19th century historian Charles O'Conor of Belengare, Ireland. REPRINT THESE VOLUMES....for here lie the dormant pages of Irish, British, Norman, Saxon, Scotish, Iberian, Hiberian, Milesian, Pictish and Gaelic history and perhaps the key to unraveling are current problems. Twenty years ago this crazy title tripped me up in my school library, and I took it home and read it in one sitting. I was caught to it because the boy in the story develops a confusing crush on his only friend, another boy, and I was coping with the same developing problem. I re-read the book several times in my school years, and was always moved and thrilled to find a writer that captured adolescence, its awkwardness and self-expression, its fears and its anticipations so perceptively. In all the years since, I've remembered the book with affection, but not until I travelled around the world last year, and spent an afternoon in the New York Public Library, had I been able to re-read it. As a boy, I didn't see the strong craft of the book, the depth and deftness of the characterizations, the careful handling of its issues. The book pulses with real emotion and life, and I realized, in my school library, and again,twenty years later in the New York Public Library, that I loved this book because, somehow, the author seemed to love me too.

This book is great for early adolescents who find that they feel "too close" to their best friend and question their feelings. The book portrays a boy growing up with an alcoholic mother and absent father in New York and his struggle after kissing his best friend. Recommended for any early teen.

I read this book several years ago and was amazed at how clearly I was identified as one who "claimed" to be Catholic but who really had no idea what a Catholic believes. This book helped to explain our faith in terms that made sense. Much has happened in my life since I first came across this book, and I am now truly "Proud to Be Catholic"!

A must for all to read who are wondering about the church. It explains all in very easy terms. Fr Ken has a style and a way that makes a difficult subject east to understand. You owe it to your self to read this. Especially those who have wondered off toother churches.

Under the able editorship of John Falk, essays by different individual authors discuss the absorption of scientific information from such sources as early childhood TV viewing, the value of infrastructure in free-choice science learning, and much more. High-level social and educational issues are thoroughly explored in this intriguing, insightful, thought provoking title.

Discusses the common names of the "celtic" breeds of dogs, complete with pronunciation "crash course" regarding the gaelic language. Very thorough, very fun attitude.

One of the few books printed in Gaelic and in modern English - It is an original source for the life and genealogies of families in the area...the appendix contains all sorts of info...You really have to be interested in Ireland and its history - this is an experts book - not for casual browser. The author, John O'Donovan was a leading genealogist and researcher in the 1800's. This is a big book compared to his 'Tribes....Hy Many' and it has a lot more in it. I am reading it at the IGF library - the only place I could find it !

Covering the Golden Age of the Gaels, the Viking Raids on the ancient territory of Ui Maine , the Norman Conquests and Land Wars of the 1100's through to the gealic resurgence of the 1300's, this must rate among one of the definitive guides to the history of western Ireland from 1000AD to 1600AD. It covers the history of the clanns of Hy Many focusing on the O'Kelly & O'Madden clanns with clear, well documented factual accounts of not only geneaologies of the families but also their daily lives, customs and traditions. A must read for the professional reseacher and enthusiast.

Doorley and Donovan provide unquestionable evidence that companies that make profitable growth a priority create substantial bottom-line value for shareholders. This is easily the clearest book I've read on the topic, and is supported by numerous real-life examples. Any prudent executive can only conclude that growth is indeed a competitive weapon. The authors denote the required tools, paths, and timing for growth under a variety of situations. Equally important, Doorley and Donovan also point out when growth can actually destroy value and how to avoid such situations. In my opinion, Value-Creating Growth is a must read and re-read for any serious manager - whether at the entrepreneurial or corporate executive level.

This book was a great read - sort of the "unified field theory" of growth. In fact, while the focus is on growth companies, the model (Commitment, Strategy, Capability) is really a way to look at any business. The author provides a unique and effective way to define what a company actually does at any given time, how it evolves through time, and what it should be doing in the future.

The book is short, readable, and useful. It's got a good mix of academic research and real-world examples. As with any business book, Doorley runs the risk of his examples falling from grace (like HP may already be doing). The "Valuable Formula" construct in some ways isn't new, but it does make an explicit link between what a customer needs and what a company does - seemingly simple, but many companies don't make that match very well. (If it were that easy, the Dow would be at 20,000.) Unlike many other business books, the "takeaways" and "Ten Essential Practices" aren't just motherhood and apple pie. Finally, the examples in the book are real, tangible, and transferable to other companies. The "Growth-Supporting Foundations" in particular seem like a unique way to benchmark against high-growth companies beyond comparing financials or the typical statistics in benchmark studies.

In short, there's a lot in here, but it is unique and presented in a very crisp, effective way. At the risk of sounding cynical, the book is obviously a teaser to get consulting work for Deloitte. But that's what business books are all about.

Apart from the blatent brochure-style writing of the book, The Second Industrial Revolution actually does do a good job in "adding value" by presenting the user with a brief, yet fairly comprehensive, overview of e-commerce. The book won't add any new insights for seasoned veterans, but will provide those unfamiliar with the field a good introduction. It also provides a good review of basic concepts. Again, a little thin on content, but not bad for 1997.

If you are going to develop a WebMethod electronic commerce system such as EC_ purchasing, EC_ finance and EC_ customer system, I will give you a strong recommendation just 'read it, study it and Do it!' and you will find your dream will be come true in no time. Trust me 'Internet Changes Everything'!

Awesome...sumarizes everything that I have been thinking over the last 12 years. Every manager should be required to read this. Everything in this book is awesome (except where he makes a statement about evolution and Christianity - he was wrong there). It is a technical/practical visioning handbook that will get you off dead-center! I suggest this one. It is worth the cost.

As Daniel Schorr in the new forward to this book suggests, World War 2 brought out the best in many men, and the ones who manned the motor torpedo boats were among the bravest, setting out in small plywood boats to fight an enemy in often large ships. The ordeal that Kennedy and his crew went through after PT-109 was destroyed is a story of courage that will last the ages. It is obvious that Robert Donovan was very careful to get the facts straight as he wrote this book, it is a great war story. For me it was a page turner, written in an easy to read, flowing style. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, a gem of a book about a small piece of American history, a fascinating account indeed. Kennedy is portrayed, and rightly so, as a compassionate and intelligent young man.

In a very fine afterword to this 40th anniversary edition, Duane Hove give us additional details of Kennedy's military service, and also interesting text on the history of the PT boats before, during, and after the war, and also where you can see PT boats on display today, only a few of these magnificent boats remain with us.

I was about 10 when the Saturday Evening Post ran a serialized version of Donovan's book. I'll never forget coming home from school the day the next edition was due, and dropping everything to read the next installment. With the passage of 40 years, and a rather older perspective, I can see that the book isn't perfect. Other reviews pick on the flaws. But it's great regardless. If you've never read the story, or like me want to relive a bit of the past, I recommend it highly.

This was an exciting book on John F. Kennedy. It had lots of action, and suspence. John F. Kennedy had a lot of willpower, that was surprising. The bravery was outstanding in this story. If you like action and adventure I could not recommend a better book. I gave this book a five star rating, because it was truely a good book. Even though this was an old book, it was exciting. This would be a very good book for kids, because there was not a lot of hard words.
