Great for those unfamiliar with personality type theory
As a parent, I found this book to provide remarkable insights into my child's behaviors, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Although I was already quite familiar with personality type theory, I still found this to be useful information. For those who are not familiar with this theory, this book will provide tremendous new insights.

As a prime example, I learned things I previously thought were problems, were in fact how my ENFJ child is supposed to act. When I changed my behavior to match her personality *her* problem diminished. Another cool ascpect of this book is learning how to understand how your children are similar or different than yourself.

A final thing to note: although this book is long, only about 25-30 general pages and another 20 or so specific pages will apply to your child. So, you will be able go through it rapidly. ...

Fun to read and extremely enjoyable and helpful
Not only did I enjoy the information on personality types of children and how to best encourage and support them, I loved reading about my husband's and my types, as well. We had a lot of "ah-hah!" moments reading this book. I highly recommend it to any parent who wants to nurture and appreciate their child for who they are.

New Insights into So-Called Problem Children
We recently had our son tested, and the tests were very helpful. What was more surprising is that the psychologist's evaluation/assessment seems to fit one of the types perfectly. We have already adjusted our approach signicantly, with results already apparent. What we thought was a stubborn, rude beligerant little boy, is actually a very sensitive feeler, who is actually very remorseful over innocent mistakes. By reading this book, parents may become more aware that what appears to be ADD, or a learning disability may be a minority personality type, or a child trying to "live out of type". It is fascinating to learn that a lot of your child's supposedly weird charecteristics are actually normal for him, and that he may just march to the tune of a different drummer.

A Good Read!
Move over, Evelyn Wood. Instead of speed reading text, Paul T. Tieger and Barbara Barron-Tieger tell you how to speed read the personalities of those with whom you work and play. This book ably explains the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. With a little practice, you can quickly identify your own personality type and that of anyone you meet. If you are already familiar with the Myers-Briggs model, much of this book will be old news. If you aren't familiar with it, and if you want to learn how to "SpeedRead" people according to this theory, this book will benefit you. The authors go into great detail about the four temperaments and the sixteen personality types within them. We from getAbstract recommend this as a book for purposeful study. However, even if you only read it once, you will learn something about yourself or the people around you.

The title is questionable; the book is excellent
I'm a nineteen year old student who's been interested in Myers-Briggs personality type for several years, and this is one of the most interesting and readable books there is. It's got the best, most accurate profiles of the 16 personality types that I've ever found. To respond to the previous review: I agree that the title of the book, and even the introduction make the book sound like it teaches manipulation. But it does not. Flip past the first few pages, and it will teach you to understand where other people are coming from. I've found personality typing really does help me to have more compassion and patience with people who are different from me. This book teaches some personality theory, but focuses more on putting it into practice. It's very understandable and I highly recommend it, especially for people who are looking for an introduction to personality types.

Wonderful Guide
I had heard about personality typing and such before from Psych classes, but this book puts it to practical use. They first give an introduction to personality typing, it's history, and modern implications. They then help you understand the differences in type as well as dispelling some common myths and connotations of terms used in typing.

The book introduces various methods of assessing a person's personality type (using preferences vs. temperment) as well as giving some exercises at the end of each chapter to help put what you just learned to use. Of course, the stress is on *Speed* reading people so they give tips on how to quickly asess someone's type so that you can put what you learned to use in the real world where you can't sit down and have a therapy session with everyone you meet.

The later chapters in the book delve into the 16 different types, grouping them by temperment, and gives detailed descriptions on common behaviors and responses of these types. Additionally they give tips on how to interact with particular types in order to communicate with them most effectively.

Note: they are VERY careful to state that typing does not equal stereotyping and always caution that people won't always fit neatly in these man made categories. Plus they are very careful to stress that this book is not intended for someone to learn how to "control" others, but rather develop a system of effective interaction with friends, colleagues, bosses, etc.

If you always felt you never really "got" people then this is a definate must read. If you always kind of "felt" people out and reacted from what you sensed (like me) this is still a must read because it takes this method and lays it out explicitly so you can use it as a tool rather than merely intution.

Want to be happier at work?
This book is a wonderful tool for those just starting to get into the workplace, for those that have been in the workplace and for anyone looking to make a career change.

It is well origanized/written. The chapters move along at the right pace, giving you information and examples right at the same time. The examples really help clear up which personality type you feel/think is you.

It is also very objective, letting you decide on everything. Without a hint of opinion from the writers. The writers do not waste your time by talking about themselves, and also are not condescending in any way as some self-help books can be.

This book will help you understand more about yourself and those around you.

The job list could be a bit more robust, but is enough to give you an idea on what you should be looking for in most fields.

Start your journey to the right career, right here!

M(ay) B(e) T(he) I(nsight) all career seekers need
The Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is obviously a more involved personality test than the introduction this book provides. 'Do What You Are' however, may be enough for most of us.I have no training in career guidance, nor was I familiar with any of the 'types' or terminology before reading this book. It gave me a good appreciation for the 16 different personality types and provided a simple step method to help me identify my personality type. For me that was sufficient, especially as along the way I have gotten insight into why certain aspects of my current job are pleasing and why others are...well, less than that. For persons contemplating or just starting their careers, the book would be very helpful. For others a little further along and not necessarily able to do a sudden career shift, or in a rut, it can be of significant use in helping adjust attitude and approaches to your job. I think the book opens up a world of possible alternative careers for all of us, you could say were hidden because we didn't know our 'type'. It's just left for us to find and seize the opportunity.

A wonderful adjunct to Kiersey & Bates' Please Understand Me
I had done a Kiersey & Bates' analysis of my personality type almost three years ago and found then that on a couple of aspects I was close to 50/50 so I wasn't quite sure which type I was. I was delighted to find that this book helped me clarify exactly which of the 16 personality types I am. I then encouraged my husband and two children to take the test and with this book's help, they came up with exact personality types for themselves, too. The four of us have been using the fascinating information in this book about our personality types to improve our relationships with each other, with our friends, and at work. I have also been using it to talk to my children about their school work, hobbies, and future job possibilities for them. One really neat benefit of the book in particular was that it enabled me and my husband to see that the many jobs we have held over the past 30 years were all on the list given by the authors for our personality type. All of a sudden our work history made so much more sense than ever before. I'm going to buy the rest of the authors' books. Especially the one on parenting.
