After a field trip to the Hoover Dam, my fourth-graders used this book to further satisfy their appetite for information on the construction of, and reasons for building the Dam. The text is clearly written, very detailed, and the photographs are outstanding. The authors added a glossary, a chronology, and further reading sources to enhance an already great resource. We read this book together, but I found my students taking the book back to their seats for more. It is a great source for reports as well. I recommend it highly to both parents and teachers. It can easily be used across the curriculum.

Zuni Warrior is a gem! I've spent a bit of time in Zuni, and this book captures it beautifully. But more importantly, it is very well written -- it captures your interest, the characters are well-drawn, the plot moves you right along. I recommend Zuni Warrior to anyone from young adult age on up -- and up and up!

I like architecture. I like buildings. And I adore The Empire State building in New York City. (as if I need to mention location) This is an informative book by Mr. Doherty and others giving us a detailed view into dreams coming to life of the then tallest building in the world. How it was built, human drama behind the scenes, how fast it went up---4 stories a week, the limestone that was only brought in from Indiana, and other fascinating information.

With a glossary, index, photo's of helmeted men in 1930---daringly straddling beams above a floor of cement doom, one can relive visiting this icon or enjoy true anticipation of using one of its 73 elevators to reach for the heavens on an open aired viewing floor where everything from weddings to arm wrestling competitions take place.

Did you know they began using outdoor lights due to an aircraft bomber, lost in the fog and crashing into her 79th floor back in the 40's? And now, one can see it adorned with special lit colors--Blue was done as a tribute to Frank Sinatra, Blue & White for Churchill, and Gold for the Pope.

Yes, the building that may now not be the tallest, will forever hold a special place in our hearts. As seen in many movies, from King Kong to Sleepless In Seattle, we can step back and wonder who is behind those 6,000 windows ( you might spot Donald Trump, he owns part of her now ) and wistfully sigh at the romance of it all.

This book is wonderful. The pictures bring back a time in our country's history that was hopeful and expansive - a nice antidote to today's closed attitudes. Anyone with an interest in American history and the story of one our momumental achievements should have this book. P.S. Children love this book too -- my two sons take it off the shelf almost every night!

Pictures that are not well known, but warm the heart

I think Gary Thorne said it best: "Remember years ago when they thought the Astrodome was the wave of the future. People thought the Astros would play there forever...What a dump!"

The Astrodome is a marvel. It became outdated for baseball due to seating expansion for football which removed the famous scoreboard. The other factors included lack of home runs because the ball didn't carry inside and the modern retractable roof giving a stadium the option for outdoor events. As a building, it is the finest in sports I've ever seen and the first to use luxury boxes. Anyone calling the edifice a dump needs a dose of reality. The fact that "The Dome" is hardly used now is sad and the thought of knocking it down would be an American tragedy. After the Roman Colosseum, the Astrodome is the most famous sports theater that has ever graced the planet.

Craig A. Doherty does a masterful job at examining the life and legacy of the Houston Astrodome. This book truly defines the Astrodome's place in architectural and sports history. Despite the larger and more modern domed facilities, the Astrodome clearly remains the best. Details on its construction and structural components are clearly explained in a truly understandable fashion. Included is a glossary of Astrodome related terms. This is a great book for adults and kids. It is definitley a book to enjoy over and over again.

This book is brimming with both enjoyable and saddening accounts of Arnold's life. We travel through his life beginning in Austria and follow him into his marriage. The information presented is very informative and entertaining, however the authors have found it necessary to include a lengthy synopsis for each and every one of Arnold's movies, making these sections rather boring. Reading about the subjects life is much more interesting than reading a lengthy synopsis of the movie the subject starred in.

The Gateway Arch has many beautiful pictures. It tells why the arch was invented and whose idea it was to be an arch. This book shows every step of the arch being built and it is a very beautiful sight from the book. I highly recommend this book to others, because it is a very educational book. It gives a very excellent description of the arch.This is my first book about a real place with such beauty and I do believe it is the best educationl book.

This book is just okay. I don't think that it is that great because it is in the form of a story, and then switches back to a regular book. It isn't easy to read, and is hard to understand. If you need research for a report, it doesn't go straight to the point to give you quick research facts. On the other hand, it has some great photographs and some good drawings that might help you. I would recommend it to older readers.
