What You Don't Know About Retirement : A Funny Retirement Quiz

A Great Gift for Those about to Retire!
Many humorous books are funny because they make up things that cause us to laugh at others. The best humor is that which causes us to laugh at ourselves. This book falls into the latter category.

For a humor book, it has an unusual format: a series of about one hundred questions and answers concerning aspects of retirement. Each q and a is a page, and there are some humorous illustrations to go with some of the q and a's.

What I liked was that the better q and a's mirrored things that my retired friends have said to me.

"Q: What amazes most new retirees?

A: They're so busy now, they don't know how they ever had time for work."

This seems to be true because retirees find so many interesting things to do, and more time to do them.

Here is one to think about:

"Q: What are the greatest perks of retirement?

A: Running errands in the middle of the day and never standing in line."

You can organize your day to be much more efficient by picking the times to do things when everyone else is at work.

As you can imagine, there are the inevitable jokes about how many retirees it takes to change a light bulb, and other familiar gags.

I felt that the message of the book transcended the humor to actually make me think more realistically about retirement.

People who are retired might see this book as poking fun at them. People who are about to retire would see it as an object lesson. I recommend it for the latter.

Most potential retirees would probably not buy this book for themselves, so you should give it to them as a gift. Then, a nice thing to do would be to have a friendly conversation about retirement plans with the person you gave the book to. That would allow for a greater chance that the book's message will sink in: Retirement can be the best time of your life, but you have to get organized to take advantage of that.

A Guide for New (and Old) Catholics
This is a very easy read and packs a tremendous amount of explanation and Church history bearing on the Catholic mass. As a new Catholic, I was interested in the explanations of the various portions of the mass I have come accustomed to participating in. For example, I had never heard of an epiclesis o rknew that it was a part of the mass. I found the liturgical steps to be explained in a way that gave them new and significant meaning for me.

As I read more about the acknowledged Jewish roots of Christianity (which is touched on in this little guidebook), I am mystified at how there ever could have been an Inquisition and how any member of the Church could have felt anything but empathy for the Jewish people and thankfulness for the heritage they passed on to the world. It called to mind my Irish grandmother who was surprised when I told her Christ was a Jew. The Church's acknowledgment of its Jewish foundation is a positive development in Church history.

I highly recommend this little gem to anyone who wants a simple, straightforward handbook to the mass and what it should and can mean to Catholics today.

A detailed reference guide
This is an extremely detailed reference guide on German grammar. I find it very useful since the German language is full of exceptions for every rule. This book points out all of them.

For me its mind blowing to note that there are 3 independent conditions for you to decide weather or not the nominative case applies. There are 8 conditions for the accusative, 9 for the dative and 7 for the genitive. What detail.

The book is heavy in examples. Other dedicated chapters take you into the deep meaning of a lot of special phrases or communication styles.

If I listed out the table of contents it would use up the 1000 word limitation I have to write this review (or come close).

great source of info
An abosolute god-send for second or third year learners

Reading German: A Course and Reference Book

Good for someone new to foreign languages
I used this text in an independent study course, and found that while it taught me basic grammar principles, it was confusing as it didn't use the traditional names for these principles. For example, subjunctive forms were called "non-factual." It explained what a noun, verb, sentence, and independent clause were. This is most helpful for someone who has never learned a foreign language before, but for someone who has a solid grounding in grammar, this book is a bit too simple.

Intimidating, but useful
I have used this book to supplement my own book, German Quickly:
A Grammar for Reading German, and I have found the explanations
extremely helpful and the readings more interesting than the
standard textbook fare. Initially, the book looked scary, even to me, and I teach German! Therefore, I think it is more useful as a review book than as an introductory grammar. For the price, it's an excellent value, and a useful reference for anyone seriously interested in reading German scholarly texts.

Don't bother with this book.
I bought this book thinking it might help our 10-year-old son deal with the birth of his new sister, Annie, who has Down Syndrome. I found it so revolting that I threw the book away.

The boy's sister is older than he. His revulsion for her DS seems unlikely since she's been around all his life and since their parents seem to be loving and accepting.

From the families I have seen, children accept their siblings, DS and all. I found it offensive that this boy did not and must question how many families with DS the author has been around. Probably none.

...BUY THIS BOOK...
I think this book is very well written. It is written from the eyes of a sibling with a down syndrome sister. It lets the read know and feel how a sibling feels with a disabled family member. I am a younger sister of a mentally retarded older brother and I have felt and wondered many of the same things the the young boy in this book feels and goes through. At times I have thought that maybe I was a bad person for feeling these things but this book lets me know that it was okay. It shows siblings that other people have the same issues and that it is okay. It doesn't mean that you are a bad person or that you don't love you sibling just because at times you feel angry, embarassed, etc. I think the author had a good feeling of what a sibling goes through and expressed it very well in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a disabled sibling.

Well done
I think this book was very well written. I am a younger sister of a mentally retarded older brother. I think this book lets the reader see and feel what it is like to be a sibling of a disabled child. I know from my personal life I have felt sometimes the same way. And by me saying this it doesn't mean that I don't love my brother or even think that he is not an equal. I think this books helps siblings realize that it is okay to get angry, frustrated, etc. every once and a while. It doesn't mean you are a bad person or that you don't love your brother/sister.

If you're desperate to spend your cig money on something...
Ok, so you're going to quit smoking.... CONGRATS!!!! WOOHOO!!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!

So you can't think of a reason to quit? What are ya deaf, blind, dumb, and living on a deserted island?

Search the Internet, learn about tobacco related illness and ask any ex-smoker what's wrong with smoking...voila...you now have a TON MORE than this book is going to offer you.

However, if you need a small paperback pocketbook that simply lists items such as "Your mama is going to be so pleased with you" and "Less risk of illness" then go ahead and spend your money on this book.

The book is worth FAR MORE than a pack of cigarettes so if it comes down to smokes or this book..then buy the book.

Well.....okay
It delivered what it said it would - 1,440 reasons to quit. Not all of them inspired though ... It's a small book too - the type is also small. I didn't think it was worth the money spent. You could find more inspiration online or from sections of more meaty books like Complete Idiots Guide to Quitting. After getting through the first few pages I was like "Dang! - I could do a more imaginative job myself" (and I'm a crummy writer) :-) But hey, if you want to send a message to a smoking friend .... this is a positive and non-confrontational way to do it....would make a good stocking stuffer too (it's that small...)

SMOKERS AND EX-SMOKERS MUST BUY THIS BOOK
This book got me to quit. I've tried quitting a hundred times. I smoked for 24 years since I was 14 years old and have never gone more than 2 months without a cigarette until now. I've been quit for 3 months as of today and I'm nowhere close to going back; I'm done with this disgusting habit. I've used a million different strategies to quit and I always went back to smoking...until I bought this book. Whenever I tried to quit before I would have a reason to quit that I thought would work. For example, I would quit because of my health, or my tennis game, or my love life. Whatever. Eventually, when faced with enormous cravings, these excuses didn't hold up to the power of nicotine. What this book does is give you 1440 reasons to quit, not just one or two reasons. Now, when I get a really bad craving where I think I'm going to bust, I just pick up 1440 Reasons To Quit Smoking and I realize what a dangerous and stupid habit it is. Now, if I was to ever decide to smoke again, it would just be suicide pure and simple. Also, go to quitnet.net, the best website in the world if you want to stop smoking.
