Smelly Old History
All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

Smells like Tudor spirit
If you've got a "nose for news", (like we do at the Tudor Times), then this is for you. I do actually own a copy, but, it's still safe in the clear plastic wrapper. "Stinking Streets, riddled with rats and plague"... "Sailors on the high seas"..."Revolting Royals", and more. Just reading the back cover sends me straight to a clove studded orange. Part of the "Smelly Old History" series: "Roman Aromas" and "Victorian Vapours". Good for a giggle.

This book stinks -- literally!
Medieval Muck is a lot of fun. In addition to the smells (they're not ALL bad), there are many bits of historical trivia. For example, you'll learn more than you ever wanted to of the death of Thomas Becket. Kids who like the Goosebumps books will probably love this series. I can't wait to smell my way through more history.

Victorian Vapours
"Victorian Vapours," and the other books in the Smelly Old History series, provide a fun way to expose the reluctant history student to some aspects of history. Dobson provides seemingly accurate information on some of the more common aspects of daily life during the Victorian period. The books are quite enjoyable and recommendable.

A fresh start!
This small paperback has a surprising amount of information. There are "vile" scratch and sniff areas (and some pleasant ones as well) in this book, but they also serve to show that the "Vikings" are not as vile as everyone else makes them out to be- they also made important contributions to history and civilization as we know it.It's a wonderful book to introduce young (or old) readers to Norse culture. You will find it an (almost entirely) accurate account which will encourage you to learn more. I also recommend the treasure chest "The Vikings" by Fiona MacDonald as a companion to this book. Both were definitely worth the money I paid for them, and will become part of my private research collection.

Disappointing
I thought this book was terrible. The smells were of only two varieties -- floral or sulphuric. The history lessons were poor and disjointed, and my two boys quickly lost interest.

Smelly indeed! A real stinker.
This witty book is spoiled beacuase the smells impregnated into the pages do not have a long shelf life once opened. You can find better books than this if you want to find out about the subjects.

Wartime Whiffs
I was disappointed with this book. There isn't enough Sratch'n'Sniff in the book. I think there are a total of 5. I thought every page would have a smell. My boys seem to have read the book, but they too were not happy with the lack of smelly pictures. It's a great idea; kids will enjoy reading books about history with gross stuff, but...it needs more of what it says it is...Smelly Old History!
