Geology for Kids a Winner!
I used this book with a 7th grade class of "reluctant learners" and was completely delighted by their enthusiasm. All of the projects we tried (about 3/4 of those offered) were successful. As I was operating on a low budget, I appreciated being able to use the easily found materials and ingredients listed in the procedures. The Faux Marble project results were especially astounding. Get this book and enjoy!

Great Geology Book for kids

Kid Style Nature Crafts
Here is another great book by this author that makes learning nature and science fun. The seasonal organization of the book is helpful in that materials are available for the projects during the time the book suggests making them. Like "Nature Crafts for Kids",(by the same author) this book contains wonderful pictures of the projects and step by step instructions. Some of the projects are more challanging than others and adult supervision is a good idea. This is a wonderful excuse to have time together with a special child, enjoy sharing ideas and make something that can be fun and rewarding.

Take the time to share the wonderful things in nature and the things that can be made from natural things by using this book with special children around you.

Nature Crafts for Kids
This book contains wonderful ideas for a wide range of ages using items found in nature. The crafts are arranged according to the season in which most of the materials will be found. They give alternate places in which to find some materials or replacemant materials. There are great illustrations and very good step by step instructions for creating the items.

Children that have this book available to them and have the help of an interested adult need not be bored any time of the year.

Projects are fun, instructional and varied. Children can learn to enjoy nature, science and make many useful things using this book. Learning filled with fun and excitement could be a subtitle for "Nature Crafts For Kids".

Simple prints, excellent results
This book is aimed at relief printmaking without a press using a range of techniques from linocuts through to using found objects. The techniques are clearly described and are applied to a number of simple but attractive projects such as single pamphlet books. pillows or cards. The photographs are clear and helpful. I particularly liked the fact that Gwen Diehn went through the clean up process, which is often not covered in much detail, and that she used vegetable oil rather than the more noxious kerosene. Throughout the book are a number of inspiring examples by past and present printmakers which help to extend the processes described. Whilst this book is aimed primarily at beginners, it offers stimulus and information of use to the more experienced printmakers too.

great!!!
What a wonderful book! It brings alot to the imagination and really helps children learn to make their own books. It really helps bring a book to life and helps children understand that books do not always have to be paper with words written on them.

A kid again
While this book is written for young people, these projects can easily translate into adult projects. The book includes some fundamental book making but also takes you, step-by-step, to more complex design, stitchery and concepts as you go from chapter to chapter. The coptic stitch is woven into pages 28-30 so subtly that you may not immediately realize its intricacy. What is fascinating about Books that Fly is its imagination and introduction to the wonder of books. It takes the reader on a magic tour of books.

Great for creative kids
I bought this book for my daughter for Christmas. She is 10 years old and is forever making construction paper books (I have them all over my house).
From looking through this book, I know that she is going to love making all the projects that are listed in this book. I am sure that I will have a lot more books around my house but at least this will be creatively designed by my daughter!!

Good for beginners, but I was disappointed
I started journaling in 1999 after reading about it in Teesha Moore's zine, The Studio. Ever since then, I read everything I find about journaling. I bought this and was disappointed. Not only had I seen a lot of the ideas before, but I disagreed with some of the things said. For instance, Gwen tells readers to be careful with what she calls "predetermined materials" - anything that is common enough to be a cliche. She gives the example of a certain kind of gift paper that is popular and advises not to use too much of this sort of thing, lest the journal become cliched. Well, I used a Playboy bunny head sticker on a journal page last summer and was happy with how the page turned out. The Playboy bunny must be the most "predetermined material" there is - everyone is familiar with the rabbit head and has strong opinions - good or bad - about what is stands for. Due to copyright concerns, I would never be able to sell this without legal hassles, but I don't care, as this was a journal I did for myself.

Nevertheless, this book is good for someone new to journaling. I prefer Teesha Moore's PLAY.

Great Ideas, Presented Piecemeal
This book tries to do too much and too little at the same time. It touches on a number of ways to embellish pages in books, whether blank or already written on. For those pursuing these kinds of papercrafts, this is a book about "artist's journals" and "altered books."

This book has a smattering good information on each topic, and the "supplies" section at the beginning is very well thought out, but the organization of this book is very strange. There are little historical essays, which are very superficial, stuck in among technical how-to sections.

Good for a roadmap but not an overview of its subject. It would have to be a lot longer.

Be stimulated to create!
I journal in the straightforward way with a lined journal, pen, and my thoughts. While I enjoy getting my words and impressions on paper, I often feel as if there is something missing from my memories - that there is something I can be doing to make my journals go from being average to amazing.

Enter THE DECORATED PAGE...you will be challenged to create lasting pieces of artwork within your journal pages and in the process evoke more feelings then you ever thought possible. I have often seen books with creative journalers' pages presented in a "look-see" kind of way, but never thought I'd be capable of making such pages myself.

Gwen Diehn presents lists of supplies you need to get started and many methods of creating within your pages such as mandalas, cut-outs, grids, and others. She also shows different ways to present your thoughts within your writing. You will be inspired to use this book as a springboard for your own artistic and thought-provoking journal entries.
