A superb explanation of both Passover and the Seder
At one point in "The Passover Journey: A Seder Companion," author Barbara Diamond Goldin explains that there are four different places in the Bible that instruct parents to tell the Passover story to their children. The Rabbis who created the Seder came up with the idea of four different children who represent four different ways to tell about the Exodus: the wise child, the wicked child, the innocent child, and the child who does not even know how to ask a question. This develops the goal of telling about Passover so that each child can understand the story. Within that context it becomes clear that "The Passover Journey" is a volume that can speak to any child (or former child) whatever initial knowledge about the Seder they have to the reading of this book.

Illustrated by Neil Waldman with drawings of warm pastel colors that recall the temple art of Ancient Egypt, "The Passover Journey" is divided into two parts. Part One, The Israelites' Journey: The Story of the Exodus, goes back to the enslavement of the Israelites and the birth of the baby Moses. The story tells of the ten plagues that befell Egypt and ends with the Israelites walking through the parted Sea of Reeds to freedom. Part Two, Making the Israelites' Journey Our Own that tells us all about the Seder and then details its Fourteen Steps. The first part is fairly familiar to those who have read the book of Genesis or seen either "The Ten Commandments" or "The Prince of Egypt." Obviously the second part is going to be the most informative and Goldin explains everything from haroset (an apple and nut mixture that looks like the bricks and mortar the Israelites used to build Pharoadh's cities) to the well known Seder song, "Dayyenu." The Fourteen Steps of the Seder are laid out and Goldin makes a point of anticipating and answering the questions that could be asked (by any one of those aforementioned four children).

The strength of this book is that it asks and answers questions about Passover that not only lead to an understanding of its rituals and symbols, but also provides an appreciation of their historical context. I knew that as much as I knew about the story of Passover that I knew little about the Seder; this book simply proves how little I knew. This book is ideal either for children who have questions about Passover and the Seder, or for their parents, who would like to be able to answer their children's questions on their own.

A very good book
I have been at a seder for several years where every participant was given a copy of this book for the night, in addition to whatever varied haggaddot they brought. Every year i thought this was a great idea. I recommend trying this at home! About the book: The pictures are lovely, and it really does act as a good companion to a standard Passover haggadda. This book tries to revitalize the stories and add new facts and perspectives. This is worth buying!

Coraline...Not Caroline
Coraline, by Neil Gaiman, is by far one of the absolute most fasinating, intri, and exceptionally weird book I have ever read. From the first page, Neil Gaiman makes Coraline and her surrondings come to life. Coraline is a 12-14 aged girl, and seems to be more of a tomboy, and loves to be different. Everywhere she goes is a place to explore. Coraline and her parents moved into the house, it was an old house. Coraline lived in the middle flat, Mr.Bobo, the crazy old man, lived on the top, and on the bottom were Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. The first time they met, Miss Spink told Coraline that once upon a time, in their time, she and Miss Forcible were famous actresses. The crazy old man upstairs claims to be training a mouse circus, one that send messages to Coraline. One day Coraline's mom shows Coraline the door (for Coralines curiousity) just to reveal red bricks. See, a long time before, when the house was just a house, the door led somewhere, now that there are flats, the wall was simply bricked up. Then late at night Coraline finds the key, and opens the door once more, only to reveal no bricks but a passageway to another world, the other world, where her other parents are, with button eyes, and talking animals. Thats it, I can not let myself spoil anymore of this marvolous story for you. So go run to your nearest bookstore or library and grab a copy, because it's Coraline not caroline.

The Best of Neil Diamond
In general, people either admire the style of singer Neil Diamond, or they hate it. This collection is an anomoly; even those who do not consider themselves fans of Mr. Diamond will delight in this compact disk if they have the slightest bit of romance in their hearts.

Not only has the singer chosen among the world's favorite love songs to showcase here, but this type of music shows off his range to his non-fans far more successfully than his own distinctive style does with the songs he writes himself.

Neil Diamond's MOVIE ALBUM pleases its listeners.

Just a short note
Dear interested readers, although I live in the US I ordered from Amazon UK to get a hold of the paperback version of this book. I just received it this weekend. The 6 chapters which were available for "snake oil" are quite medical and speaks mostly about the fact that most alternative medicine is never been proven to work. I haven't read it all yet, so I can't not yet get specific
the most part of the book are articles written by John from 1989 till a few days before his untimely death. The topics are as varied as they come: Geneva, Yiddish, cancer, book reviews etc. Those are mostly more upbeat written then the first 6 chapters.

To conclude: I love his writing style. I'm sorry I haven't gotten a chance to see or hear any of his shows like in the UK. He leaves behind a great legacy.

To Much Politics
This book started off good, with the opening of the stadium and the first home run hit by Babe Ruth to christen the stadium. But after the first two chapters the book becomes to involved with the politics and the businessmen behind the stadium and its players. This book did not keep me entertained while I read it, and I found myself many times struggling to turn to the next page.

The Diamond In The Bronx-Yankee Stadium and Politics of NY
If you are a baseball fan,Yankee fan or ballpark buff expecting to find a history of the Stadium and/or the events on the field, you'll find this book boooorrriiing. If,however, you are into politics with a little baseball history thrown in,then this book is for you.The Introduction sounds promising-Yankee owner Ruppert using his own money to build a new stadium as opposed to modern day owners looking for a handout.Weighing the importance of financing a stadium against the other needs of a city. And,does stadium subsidy take money from things like public safety, transportation, health care, etc?
The book itself starts on Opening Day 1923,describing the festivities and on field happenings. It quickly delves into politics of the era and ties between team owners and City Hall. There is a brief background on Babe Ruth and his influence on the game. There is a history of the early Highlanders,Hilltop Park and the Yanks stay in the Polo Grounds. Some mention of the Stadiums construction. Then,we're bought back to the late 19th century and a look at immigrants, including details of a dog fight. After a history of early 20th century Bronx,I started skimming through the pages. The mysterious Tammany Hall is of no interest to most baseball fans.Neither are Mayor Walkers escapades,Prohibition, the Depression,President Roosevelt or Mayor LaGuardia. There is a brief recap of each season. The next chapters cover the Stadiums sale in the 50's and the race issues in the Bronx {and Brooklyn}which factor into matters even today.
Thing get interesting {to me} in the 70's with discussions between the Yanks Mike Burke and NYC Mayor Lindsay regarding Stadium renovations. It seems that the Yankee Village concept actually began back then. The threat of the team moving to New Jersey was real {the NFL Giants moved} although the author does not feel the threat was as real regarding the Yankees. The last few chapters discuss the failed Steinbrenner-Mayor Koch lease extension negotiations, and the Mayor Giulianiani love-fest with the Yanks.A good amount of local columnists reactions are included, though there are too many from the high brow NY Times for my tastes. The photo section includes fourteen in all, seven of which I found interesting.
In fairness to Mr Sullivan,I enjoyed his earlier book,The Dodgers Move West, which detailed the political manuevering regarding the Brooklyn Dodgers and their attempts to get a new stadium built.Perhaps that book was better written because Mr Sullivan is a Dodger fan and the subject matter was more interesting to him.Except for brief passages, his Yankee Stadium book will leave most fans wishing they hadn't spent the money.I borrowed mine from the library, and noticed that it had been taken out about two dozen times, almost always for a period of two days.I feel that this is because most readers realized it is a political book disguised as a baseball book, and they quickly became turned off.

The House the New York Built
Although i felt the book started off rather slowly with a lot of discussion of politics and insignificant dates, further along came an extremely informative well written account of New York Stadium. The book isn't about the team itself, but the field in which they play and the significance of "the house." Sullivan's historic knowledge of the game of baseball will enthrall the reader with a variety of interesting facts beginning with the birth of the franchise all the way to present day activity.
