Strategies of Containment: A Critical Appraisal of Postwar American National Security

This novel is a touching book about man and nature.
The Old Man and The Sea is a wonderful novel that opens our eyes to nature. The underlying theme of this book is that man and nature are equal, and should be treated as an equal. This novel is about an old fisherman who struggles with a gigantic fish; not to be sucessful, but for pride. He clearly represents a Hemingway Hero in all senses of the word, including that he is flawed. Ernest Hemingway has once again made his point through wonderful literature and I would congratulate him on this work of art should he be living

A brilliant work
It would seem to me to be redundant to have the audio cassette in addition to the book, but if you want to go that way, be my guest. This book is one of the most amazing experiences that one can have while reading. I recommend anything that contains this literary masterpiece.

The Old Man and the Sea
The book Ichose to read was The old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. This book was very interesting to me because this is the first time I am reading a book written by Ernest Hemingway. This novel was a hundred and fifty three pages. After I read this novel I convinced myself that this was an interesting book to read. That is because the author Ernest Hemingway has only a few weaknesses in his novel. This novel had a lot of strengths, the one that I liked was, he did'nt bore his audience with the book, he had many interesting ideas. From all the books that Iread this novel was the most interesting and understandable novel. This book is perfect for teenagers to read because they learn that success doesnt just come by just sitting there, it comes by working very hard. Another strength was that the kid and the old man worked together and showed that to be successful in life, it takes friendship, and working together like a team. Another strength was it had a lot of symbolism. Besides strenghts this book had a few weaknesses too. The part where the old man Santiago spent two days trying to catch a big fish that was the size of his boat. Ernest Hemingway could have made it a lttle bit more interesting by adding a little more action to the novel. The story is overly simplistic. I recommend this novel to everyone that can read. I would not recommend this novel to anyone who likes adventures. And to anyone who doesnt like complicated, suspensful novels. In conclusion this novel taught me a lot of stuff like, never quit, and reach for your goals. I understood the importance of having people help me, and the value of friendship. I recommend you to read this novel, You will understand a lot of things you didnt before. By Gevork Sarkisyan

A well-done introduction to the Endurance epic
This book is a very well-written and illustrated introduction to the epic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance in their struggle to survive the loss of their ship in the ice. If you know a child who feels put-upon because they don't have the latest model gaming system or the right type of monsters in their card decks, get them to read this, and perhaps it will prove a useful antidote to the ennervating softness of "modern" civilization.

This casebook helps you finally GET IT!
Valenti's casebook helped me understand "Old Man and the Sea" by explaining the authors life and environment at the time of the books conception. With detailed research, maps and images I could better grasp what the author was writing about. To me this book made all the difference in the world in my understanding what I read and made Hemingway far less intemidating. This book doesn't try to cheat by telling you a "Cliff Notes" summary of the story, but is an actual accessory to better understanding the novel, written by an expert in the field.

A book review on The Old man and the Sea
A Review on The Old man and the sea

The Old Man and the Sea, a story that pursues persistence and determination, but also a book which I think should have won the Pulitzer Prize. I don't think the book is deserving of the Pulitzer Prize because the story confuses readers by going back and forth from Santiago's past and his present. For example Santiago reflects on his past, dream wise and as for as how he used to be or what he used to like. Santiago always goes back in time in his mind and talks about how he used to be. He talks about how he "used" to dream about women, but "presently" he dreams of lions instead.
Likewise he also says how turtle hunting used to be and talks about his three day arm wrestle with the African American man. He compares, later on his turtle hunting and how it used to be and how different it is now. He talks of his past strength and emphasizes how old and weak he is now.
In conclusion, that explains how some readers may get confused or lost in Santiago's past and present since he is always reflecting on or comparing them. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to someone, it depends if the person likes a book that is very detailed and repetitive. For example, a repetitive part of the book is when Santiago keeps wishing that the boy was there with him to help him fish. Whenever he doesn't he think he can do something or if he gets exited about something in specific, he wishes that the boy was there with him. I think there are too many examples of both very detailed and repetitive parts in the story.
Another important thing is that some of the sentences are very detailed and clocklike. An example of the book being detailed is when he goes into detail about certain things such as his personal life and his worries and him using big words to explain small things such as "treachery". I think that the author (Ernest Hemmingway) could of made things a little more simple and understandable for readers.
Concluding, the old man and the sea is a story that pursues persistence and determination but also a book that, I think should not have deserved to win the Pulitzer Prize.

A quick fix of Hemingway.
"The Snows of Kilimanjaro" contains some of Hemingway's finer short stories. And like many of his works, they resemble his life. Everything from his childhood to his later years in Africa are material for these tales. The stories of Hemingway's recurrent character, Nick Adams, who some say is Hemingway himself, are contained in this book also. All the works bear his distinct imprint, even though many are under ten pages in length. "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" is what I consider Hemingway's most potent short story of all. This collection is a great primer for those who are unacquainted with Hemingway's work and wish to discover his talent.

the hyena was slipping right along the edge of it
although i have not read any other short story in this collection except the title story, i still gave it 5 stars just because that story alone would give me the reason to buy this book (because i don't own it yet). i don't think i would be interested in any of hemingway's novels; i doubt if i could get any sort of satisfaction reading about his hunting expeditions and stuff like that. even "the old man and the sea" bored the hell out of me. i just seem to lack the patience with this writer. for the most part, i just can't read him. but "the snows of kilimanjaro" i read, and it is one of the greatest short stories there is. it is the best story about death, in my opinion. and i knew that hemingway had BEEN there, and had brought this story back to us. (and this was before i knew anything about his travels to africa, or any details about his personal life in general). i read this story, and i am very impressed by hemingway's ability to write simply, yet deeply. it is a very admirable trait for any writer to have - to be able to evoke images and express oneself using as few words as possible... that takes talent. william burroughs has said that "the snows of kilimanjaro" is hemingway's best, if not only, true writing.

Long, but detailed.
"Cliffsnotes Hemingway's the Old Man and the Sea" are decent, but at times very long, but that is because of the detail. If you need to understand the symbolism, then these CliffsNotes are a must! As always, you should read the CliffsNotes AFTER you have read "The Old Man and the Sea." I recommmend.

Old Man and the Sea
I think that these cliff notes realy helped me in my report. They made everything clear when after I read the book. I bought a used edition and it was clean and nice. I really think that whoever needs cliff notes at a low price should come her to buy them!! Besides, this is a really good book!!

Daniel's Old Man and the Sea Review
Ernest Hemmingway's book The Old Man and the Sea is incredibly entertaining and full of vivid detail. Ernest uses very vivid detail to maintain the reader's interest. This is why I think that Hemmingway's book took the title of one of the best books ever written, and won the Pulitzer literature award.
Ernest uses very vivid detail in order to put a picture in the readers head and keep them interested in the story. In the Santiago is a very old and humble man who is a fisher and hasn't caught a fish in 84 days. Santiago gets his big break when he hooks a very large marlin and is pulled out to sea by this large fish, way out to sea. After Santiago is done tying the Marlin to his boat a shark picks up the scent of the blood and bites a chunk out of the fish only to die by Santiago's spear as Ernest explains this death and the death of the later sharks to come with much detail making this one of my favorite parts in the book.
Hemmingway has a very unique style and has a good way of grabbing the reader's attention. Ernest doesn't use very complicated confusing words, he uses some Cuban sayings that are hard to follow but don't leave you wondering because most of the time he explains what they mean later on in the book. It seems that Santiago wrote this book kind of depressed and not too happily, I think this is what gives Ernest a very different unique way of writing.
The Old Man and the Sea is entertaining and keeps your attention. Attention grabbers are one thing that Ernest did very well when he wrote this novel. He says attention grabbing things and once he gets you sucked in you just want to keep on reading.
Overall this book is entertaining and is worth reading, although it could get very slow at times the slow parts are even entertaining. Ernest made this book very easy to follow and understand and deserved to win the title of one of the best books ever written. So as for my opinion I think that this book is worth reading and is very entertaining and somewhat action packed.

The Old Man and the Sea
This is a thrilling adventure book; it was entertaining throughout out the whole thing. This classic tail of an old man who sets out on a journey across the sea looking for fish to catch, to make his salary. As the book moves on he hooks the biggest fish he has ever seen finally getting a grasp on his line the fish starts to pull him out to see. After three days the old man is very weak and tired he has not had a break in three days when suddenly the fish gives in. He finally pulls the fish in and harpoons him, when the fish is dead he feels almost guilty for killing such an incredible fish but what done is done. He ties the fish to his boat and starts his long journey home around half way home the first two sharks hit the fish and he fights them off. The whole way back sharks keep eating at the fish and the old man keeps fighting them off. By the time he is home the fish is gone except for the head and skeleton. It was a great book love, fear and adventure if you are looking a short entertaining novel then read this book. One of my top favorites books of all time.

An Incredible Story
Ernest Hemmingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" is quite simply a perfect book. Just about everyone knows the story, (you certainly do if you are reading this review) so I will merely say that I have never read a work of fiction which so sharply displays emotion. The struggle for Santiago in this book is written so powerfully, that I am deeply moved when I come to the end. I personally loathe the idea of actually going fishing, but this book will forever give me the opportunity to do so in the recesses of my mentality, which suits me quite well indeed.

Please -- no more literature critics....
This book is a "matter of fact" gathered from the thoughts of a fellow who enjoyed the outdoors more than his own life. Within the pages of this 'compilation' a person can understand a little more about a poet that was not revealed through many of the original passages. As I have personally read, many of Hemingway's articles, short stories and novels are written from hindsight and many personal experiences, albiet great compositions; there was a literate outcome and method.
Nick Lyons is a great writer on his own and he has had much of a collection to work with in preparing this book. His [Lyons] piecing of this puzzle has made good sense and his additions have overwhelmed the possibilities.

Hemingway on Fishing
This is an excellent collection of Hemingway's writings about fishing, each taken from a larger work. It is a great introduction to Hemingway if your new to him, and a great refresher to him if you've been away for awhile. Read this book and you won't be disappointed, but please do each work the respect of reading the book it came from, and experience each work in it's original context.

Gathers Hemingway's writings about angling
Hemingway On Fishing gathers Hemingway's writings about angling, and while it fits into our 'literature' section quite neatly with its flowing prose and evocative descriptions, it's the fisherman who will appreciate Hemingway's passion for the sport. Nick Lyons edits the presentation and provide an introduction, Jack Hemingway the foreword in this classic treatise.
