A great book
This book makes you understand, learn, think and treat spinal problems in a racional way.

textbook of spinal surgery
This represents a substantial improvement from the first edition, which was a good text in it's own right. The subject matter is more complete, and virtually every topic has been updated. I recommend it highly.

Excellent...
This books is, in my opinion, the most accurate souce of information ever written on Hawaii's Japanese community. Other authors, such as Takaki, have also written excellent historical guides; however, they are usually mainland-born and don't/can't understand life in Hawaii. "Kodomo No Tame Ni" is a virtual encyclopedia of many lesser-known aspects of the Issei generation, and illustrates the past which has created the atmosphere of modern Hawaii.

Anyone interested in discovering the true past of Hawaii's Japanese (as well as Hawaii's other ethnic groups) should definitely get their hands on this collection of stories, which-- due to the growing mainland-ish "Americanization" of Hawaii-- will soon be forgotten.

In this day and age, I don't think another book of this sort will ever be written.

great for reading in class
I had to read this book for school and I was completely bowled over because I was expecting it to be the same boring snoozer that most of my text books were. and irrelevant. But it wasn't. It was totally cool and got me a great grade in that class. The only other book I liked enough to read more than once for class was Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine. The way it broke down all the little steps was really useful.

One of the Best Overall PR Books
Wilcox and Jackson take on a huge topic--pr--and manage to digest and regurgitate it in a well-written and easy-to-understand style for students and newcomers, yet still retaining enough impact for experienced hands.

Unlike many peers who fail to take their subject into today's wired world, Wilcox and Jackson are fully aware and embrace the fact that a book that ignores the Internet is a book that is only half-complete, not complete with a future edition to create tomorrow. In that, they are similar to Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which focuses on low-cost methods to use the Internet to attain the organization's public relations goal.

Fundamentally, while Wilcox and Jackson cover various techniques step-by-step and explore the importance of good writing in general, one truth must be distinctly understood--for all their own skill in writing, Wilcox and Jackson cannot teach good writing. But, that is a fault common to all public relations and business books.

I teach using this text--the learning curve is very hgh!
I teach PR for Drexel University in Philadelphia. My non-traditional students are employees in a very large corporation who are earning a special degree in Customer Service Operations. This book enables them to work with me in taking on a non-profit "client" for whom we do a complete PR/marketing plan in just five weeks. I'm continually amazed at how well they learn all the basic premises from the book, augmented by my teaching and lectures from experts. The authors are members of my national PR group, Public Relations Society of America, which also pleases me very much--it works, gentlemen! Rosemary Rys, APR

Irresistible Darkness
Gone, Baby, Gone is everything we've come to expect from Lehane, all turned up a notch. He takes on the terrifying subject of child abduction and refuses to flinch in his merciless exploration of all the gruesome implications and possibilities. Kenzie and Gennaro return in fine form, and Lehane takes us further into their complex individual psyches as well as their strangely woven relationship. Bubba returns and the story is populated with a compelling and mysterious supporting cast. Lehane flexes a little as a writer with mixed results. This is a more intricate plot than in the past and he weaves the various threads well but many of the descriptions are overdone and unnecessary. Too often I lost Kenzie's voice and became conscious of Lehane's. Sometimes, Lehane is his own worst enemy, the action is so engrossing I lose my patience when he steps away from it. Through the four novels I have become deeply involved in the lives of Kenzie and Gennaro, the time between books is like losing touch with close friends. Gone, Baby, Gone is easily the darkest of the series and simultaneously an excruciating and engrossing read. It may be detective fiction but it is anything but light reading. If you have not yet discovered Lehane you live in a poorer world. Start at the beginning and enjoy.

Wow!
Whew! I couldn't help but race through GONE, BABY, GONE. The Kenzie/Gennaro series is tough, gritty and absolutely stunning...page turners like no other. It isn't often that characters are as memorable and real as Patrick and Angie...days after finishing the first four of his books, it will be some time before I will be able to release them from the corner of my mind. Lehane has proven himself a major player in the genre, no one else even comes close...I just wish I didn't have to wait so long for the next installment! P.S. Thank you Leah Loar-Mays for giving away the end of the book...when reviewing, please refrain from giving away important plot details. Some of us who read these reviews have yet to read the book!

I'm Gone,Baby,Gone--To Get All The Rest Of Lehane's Books!
After reading my first Dennis Lehane book -- Gone, Baby, Gone -- all I can say is I'm hooked! Great plot, very well- developed and real characters and a writing style that makes you want to finish the book in one sitting. I've just gone out and bought two others in the series --Sacred and Prayers For Rain -- and am looking for the others. If you like good, exciting mysteries, especially ones that depict real life situations (i,e, every outcome does not always have a happy ending), than add Lehane to your list of must-read authors!

Weak plot plus smart-aleck sleuth equals a dull book
I read Lehane's first two books and enjoyed them immensely. But Sacred was so bad that I am very angry that I wasted several hours reading it. The plot seemed to be an afterthought to the smart-aleck, wisecracking dialog of Kenzie. I was also turned off by the condescending put-downs of Florida. Lehane's provincial adoration of Boston detracts from his stories.

Fast paced and interesting
"Sacred" is a book that moves along at a satisfyingly quick pace. Even if you get tired of a few improbable action sequences and somewhat cheesy dialogue, there's enough going on in the novel to keep you from putting it down. A constantly twisting storyline as well as a real chemistry between the main characters Patrick and Angie distract the reader from the few faults in the novel. Also, LeHane doesn't depend on his previous "A Drink Before the War" or "Darkness Take My Hand" to explain the backgrounds of either character. A complete novice to his books will have no problem following along, as each of their prior escapades is summarized efficiently in the pages of "Sacred". In the end, you are left with a quick read that leaves you craving for more.

Another Score For Lehane
I can't stress how good this guys books are. And while I didn't think it was as great as his previous two in the series, it still has moments that take your breath away. Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro are first introduced in his book, "A Drink Before the War." It's so important to start there and read them in sequence. "Sacred" begins in an alomst comical manner for the two detectives but in true Lehane style soon turns gritty and violent. They're asked, rather forcefully to track down a billionaire's daughter who has disappeared along with the original detective who was hired to find her. It just so happens the original detective was Patrick's mentor. These books are fast paced and you'll find yourself staying up late to finish them. What a great set of characters Lehane's created.

A good start on the problem of modern piracy
This subject is hard to get a handle on and the authors do make an attempt in a slim volume of work. But sadly, what I saw was the InternationalMaritime Bureau report on piracy, three years out of date.

However, this is a good faith effort, details are hard to find, but, of course I would have liked more. Much of these incidents are sketchy, little more than a report on ship name, location of attack and what was taken.

The authors do make the point that piracy is still rare, but it is a violent crime and does affect maritime community -- who wants a shotgun stuck in your face as they rob all your personal possession?

The book lacks good methods for crews to counter piracy, "Maritime Terror," although a slimer volume, has more meat on that subject.

The authors spent some time handwringing on whether to carry arms or use firehoses to repel boarders. They didn't spend much effort on what a ship could do to prevent boarding in the first place, other than suggest "wagging the tail."

They did suggest one very good method of combating piracy, which was to insert special forces onboard during hih risk transits under a UN flag, but didn't flush that out in any detail.

Also, I would have liked to have seen an overview of shipping lane traffic, the shippers, their cargo, and how those ships are crewed. They did give gross numbers in a risk analysis, but that could have made a good chapter.

Finally, the risk to pleasure boats was lightly touched on. I would have liked to have seen a map plotting high risk waters, something to avoid. Also, a plot of all incidents and a rating of high risk ports.

Overall, I was dissapointed. I expected a better book from the US Naval Institute.

A GOOD BOOK
AS A PLEASURE BOATER WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN SAILING THE CARIBEAN, I FOUND JOLLY RODGER WITH AN UZI TO BE A MOST FASCINATIONG READ. ANYONE WHO GOES ANYWHERE ON THE OCEAN SHOULD BUY IT.

A much needed warning on today's high seas lawlessness.
Jolly Roger With An Uzi lays out the history, rise and threat of modern piracy on the high seas. Reported pirate attacks have increased more than 80% (with a large number believed to go unreported), and this much needed expose warns seafarers of the scope and ferocity of today's maritime violence, suggesting actions that can be taken to be secure on the oceans of the world. While pirate assaults principally occur in the waters off Indonesia, Brazil, Somalia, and the South China Sea, no location is entirely safe. Today's pirates use highspeed boats and automatic weapons, plan their attacks carefully, utilize information gained through government agencies in seaports, and cost severe economic losses, mounting deaths of mariners, and horrific tragedies for sea-going passengers. Jolly Roger With An Uzi also offers suggestions for American policy reforms, new roles for government agencies, military, and maritime enforcement unites, as well as a redefinition of jurisdictions on the high seas. A unique and long needed clarion call of alarm, Jolly Roger With An Uzi is highly recommended reading for students of international studies, maritime studies, maritime enforcement personnel, and the business community engaged in maritime shipping.
