A first-rate collection of sharply observed un-love stories
These interconnected stories follow the (lesbian) narrator's search for love in New York and overseas; De Lynn's minimalist style is a marvel, and she is a thematic cousin to Mary Gaitskill and Denis Johnson.

Out There
I enjoyed the 1st part of the book, even found it erotic until the "being turned into a dog" part started. It was a bit over the top for me, especially the dog show.

Dark & unpleasant & commendable
I got this book in hand bij mistake, and really never let it out again. It's not a nice book and it's not attractive, indeed it's dark and unpleasant and the characters are not always as rounded as the author thinks them. But it is exactly the disturbing nature of the things happening that kept me reading, and the thought that this is something lurking in most people's minds, somewhere- it disturbed me deeply, and months after reading it i'm still not comfortable thinking about this book. An example: I am,on beforehand, disgusted by sex with dogs. Still, the story pulls you in (unfortunate metaphor), so that when it happens, it is not really a surprise, and I accepted it as a logical outcome. That's what's so good about the book, and that is why I recommend it.

repulsive and intriguing all at the same time
I heard about this book on NPR so it seemed like a pretty good bet. When I first started reading the book, I was a little disgusted by the explicitness of the sexual acts depicted. But once I got passed the initial shock, I couldn't stop reading. If you want to read something other than the usual, read this book. However, if you can't get past the graphic and lurid details of s&m acts, I wouldn't recommend this one.

Annoyingly tedious, repetitive & talky book
If you, like me, have forgotten just how annoyingly tedious REAL teenagers talk, reading this book will bring it right back to you.

The main female character, Lynn, a senior in high school, seems to have developed a crush on a 37 year old female teacher, who as it turns out is a lesbian.

However Lynn doesn't seem to really know how she feels about ANYTHING, including her crush on Miss Maxfeld. The only certainity in Lynn's life is the fact she abhors her parents, who apparently have no thoughts or conversations about anything besides their only daughter, Lynn.

Page after endless page we drift along with Lynn as she indulges herself in what passes for thoughts and conversations. Lynn wonders a lot, but learns nothing, and neither does the reader. For a young woman on the brink of entering her college years, Lynn behaves more like a 12 year old.

I would only recommend this novel to someone who suffers from severe insomnia or who enjoys being bored stiff. Two stars was actually being generous on my part.

A neglected masterpiece
IN THRALL is, quite simply, one of the most perfect, searing, original, and touching novels written by an American in the last fifty years. I've re-read it several times since it came out almost 20 years ago, and it remains as fresh and exciting and pertinent as the day it came out. Not for the politically correct, this novel will appeal to intelligent, literary people. If you enjoy thrilling, daring writing--this book is for you. This is a universal story that will never date.

Don't bother.
Lorraine, a fashion coordinator whose lawyer husband, David, is unfaithful, takes up with Jack. Jack is an incredibly lazy artist. He moves into her NYC apartment but hates it -- he'd rather have the apartment upstairs, which is just like Lorraine's was before an expensive and extensive renovation.

David moves in with his mistress, Cecilia. Cecilia goes back to her husband so David is out of a place to live. He can't go home because Jack is there so he has to look for another apartment.

Everyone wants something better and each thinks he or she has the worst. Jack-the-dog, however, is a dear creature whose story is told through canine eyes. DeLynn should throw out the entire manuscript except for the pages that tell the dog's tale.

This book is foul in language, shallow in perception and not worth your money.
