My Favorite Book!
This book captivates a sense of innocence and honesty that is palpable on each page. Mable Lee Barby wrote the book I always wanted to read about the district that as a child I wandered and wondered endlessly. Mable is buried between "Jonce" and "Kate" overlooking the town. Cripple Creek has mostly disappeared from what I knew. There are no more "old timers" sitting on chairs in front of screen doors of dusty old shops holding so many individual memories of the characters that made Cripple Creek such an special place. The wheel house is almost gone from the surrounding hills but there is a spiritual core of a history that will never die.

Frank Waters did a wonderful job with his two books and there have been others but when I see Bennett St. or even pass the front steps of the old stone building of Colorado College I think of Mable Lee Barbee. In this book she left a record of her and others lives that will never be equaled. There is a sweet fragrance!

Opens a window into the past
This is a brilliant novel which engages the reader fully. The plot twists and turns as if this were a work of fiction rather than a biography. The characters are vivid, unique and unforgettable ... and they were real people. Ms. Barbee Lee was a keen observer and her descriptions are fascinating. Most of all, I liked how she tells us interesting gossip about some of the powerful people involved in the Cripple Creek gold rush and then, explains how things turned out and why. Some of these explanations needed enough time to pass in order to be told. While reading this page-turner, I felt like I was watching the events unfold through a window. I have recommended it to friends just because it is a really good book. The fact that it is true and will give the reader more insight into the past and into Colorado's mining history is just a bonus.

Fabulous first hand account of Cripple Creek
For people who love to read about history they will especially enjoy this book. Rather than being a boring historical account of events that occurred during the Cripple Creek gold rush this book is a first hand experience of a young girl who actually grew up in Cripple Creek during the gold rush. It is filled with lots of tid-bits about what life was actually like back then - food they ate, clothes they wore ect. as opposed to a bunch of historical facts. A good read if you're interested in what life was like in Cripple Creek.

Great Stuff!!
I got this as a gift last year and can't wait for this year's edition to arrive! Be warned: double your annual book-buying budget before you get this; you'll find at least one book a month that you absoltely MUST read. Amazon should give these things away, they'd make their money back a hundred times over.

These people know books!!!
I have been purchasing "Book Lover's Calendar" for the last 3 years or so, and have rarely been disappointed by any of their suggestions. The summaries are well-written, concise and educational. They have introduced me to some fabulous writers, and prompted me to re-read some forgotten favorites. A must-have for any bibliophile!!!

More Books Than You Will Read in a Year, But Ideas Galore
I have collected more book suggestions from "The Book Lover's Page-a-Day Calendar's" plentiful source than from any other. Admittedly, I have an eclectic taste in reading material and am always open to a good idea. 2003 will be the fourth year I will be reading the current day's page of "The Book Lover's Page-a-Day Calendar" a part of my morning ritual. My desk drawers and purses are filled with calendar pages torn off over the past three years. The one-paragraph reviews I saved are all about books meant to be further researched and either purchased, borrowed from the library, searched for in out-of-print venues or given as gifts to others. If you are a book lover, I'm sure you won't be able to resist finding out more about books under such headings as "Rediscovered Classics," "You've Never Read (fill in name of classic author)?" "The Writer's Life," "Worth Looking For," and other such teasers. The books reviewed are not always the most popular or well-known, but most have some nugget of appeal that will pique your curiosity. I'm looking forward to starting the 2003 calendar, which like its predecessors, I'm sure will not disappoint. I've learned to order this calendar early on because I've sometimes spent the end of the year searching for a place that still has copies available.

Adventurous and Entertaining.
I read "Bright Moon at Mid-Day." I loved it! It was easy to read and flowed very well.
Another thing I liked was there was always something happening. When one adventure ended another was in the works.
I like to be entertained when I read, that is the idea, and this book did just that.
I actually was left wondering how and what the family did when they came back to the lower forty-eight.
It is a good book!

Characters I cared about
This is a book I hated to put down and looked forward to getting back to - I wanted to see what would happen to this family I had grown to care about. Living in Alaska at the turn of the 20th century wasn't easy under the best of circumstances, yet William Miller's growing family thrived during their 10-year stay. Of course Miller's phenomenal luck was more than a little helpful here.

Though the story is fiction it is based upon the lives of the actual Miller family, and to me that made the characters all the more interesting.

"Bright Moon" is Terriffic!
Exciting! Every chapter is an adventure. The growth of this courageous and loving young couple as they raise five children in the inhospitable Northern Alaska town of Candle, near the Arctic Circle, is a wonderful book for all ages. I especially liked the love and caring for their sled dogs. The change from a chauvenistic male to a loving and caring husband and father is the underlying theme as far as I was concerned. A fine read!

It helped during a low period of my life.
Mr. Hughes' book is a big help to get closer to God. It allowed me to taylor the daily readings to my needs. It challenged me and helped me to find peace in my life. It gave me a greater understanding of God's word. I can not wait to find more of Mr. Hughes' books.

Insightful, deep devotional study guide.
An excellent devotional with scriptural support that makes one think. Much deeper than the average meditation guide. Index of themes is also most helpful. Highly recommend to those in pursuit of a closer walk with God. (Each devotional takes around 15 minutes.)

Very inspiring.
Every Day Light is inspiring and it gives the reader a opportunity to study the Bible. This devotional not only gives commentary but challenges the reader to give their input about the overall theme.

The beautides study was most helpful. Mr. Hughes presented provoking thoughts on this topic.

I will be looking forward to the next edition.

Around the Day in Eighty Worlds

Total Freedom
Julio Cortazar at his most relaxed and free. Combining
essays and fiction and poetry plus excellent visual imagery
(without ever labeling anything), this book is one I keep
on hand for thumbing through, any time. Cortazar's jazz
writing is some of the best ever, preceding by years Lester
Bangs' justly celebrated impressionistic music writing.
Cortazar reveals himself to be a "jazz writer" on a more
profound level than any of the Americans who wrote the
way they thought jazz sounded. His metaphysical approach
puts him in the company of Robert Musil, Clarice Lispector,
and Emily Dickinson, not to mention Charlie Parker, too.
Cortazar's whole approach to writing comes through in this
volume, and it's a great antidote to any outbreak of aesthetic
fussiness you might be experiencing.

One Julio Speaks of Another
Julio Cortazar was named after Jules Verne who he read as a child and thus the title of the book. The book is full of photographs, drawings, engravings but most importantly Julio's words. Not really a book to read from cover to cover more like a book to sift through now and then.
If you are a Cortazar fan then you know of his other books:
Bestiario(1951) later published as End of the Game or Blow-up.
Rayuela(1963) later published as Hopscotch.
Todos los fuegos el fuego(1966) later published as All Fires the Fire. (This collection contains my favorite Cortazar story, "The Southern Thruway".) & many other books.
This book will appeal to both longtime fans and also those who want to get to know Cortazar for the first time.
I was lucky enough to find a hard cover in a used book shop and that is a nice way to own this because it is a book which will be picked up and put down often. On the cover is a wonderful painting by Paul Delvaux The Nightwatchman.
I love Julio's stories and highly recommend them to anyone. His novels I think are for a more select group of readers, those who have a lot of patience for long experiments. I like Cortazars short experiments best and this book has, well, at least eighty.
You get some of his fiction but also you get his essays on Poe(he translated the works of Poe into Spanish), Louis Armstrong, Thelonius Monk and Marcel Duchamp, Jose Lezama Lima.... which should give you some idea of what kind of things occupied Julios always curious mind. This more than any other of Julio Cortazars books is a collage-book.
This book is perhaps my favorite Cortazar because it is so varied in its subject matter that I never tire of it or feel like I have uncovered all its secrets.

The book of mormon for latter day families
We have started using this as scripture study and it has helped us very much to understand the contents of the scriptures. I read this to my children and we stop to read the thought provoking questions that the author has put at the bottom. He also puts the meaning of words at the bottom which helps us understand. We love it as a family and will be getting The New Testament in the same format. Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Great for LDS families with young children.
This is a great addition to your library. The style in which this book is set up is very helpful and fun for the young readers in your home. There are many pictures from Del Parson, who painted Christ in the red robe in this book, as well as many other pictures from other great artists. There are also many other helps in the book. Certain verse numbers are marked in red indicating there is further information like definitions of certain words, quotes from modern scipture and modern Church leaders, and many other things at the bottom of each page. This book makes reading with with your children fun.

Too good to be true -- but it is true!
I ordered this book for three reasons: Since I taught a course in college-level nutrition, I am appalled at how terrible the diets of too many of us really are. Plus I am something of a fitness nut. Finally I am also a "foodie" who enjoys cooking and eating delicious "gourmet quality" meals that also incorporate first-rate nutrition.

This is the diet book that the USA has been waiting for but too few persons seem to know about it -- yet. It is scientifically accurate and the conclusions of the authors are sound. It is proof that eating for improved health and fitness need not be boring. Indeed, the day after I received the book, I prepared the mango/black bean salad to rave reviews and no leftovers.

The message is not new: We need to increase the fruits, veggies, and whole grain foods in our diet, and to decrease red meats, sodium, and sweets. Although the target audience is those with hypertension, nearly everyone can benefit from accepting the book's challenge to try the DASH diet for two weeks -- and for a lifetime. The fact that the authors go beyond the science and present imaginative, delicious recipes and menus is a definite strength of the book.

A salute to the authors for this timely book!

A scientifically proven method of reducing blood pressure
Dr. Thomas Moore's DASH Diet For Hypertension poses a drug-free, scientifically proven method of reducing blood pressure and is based on two large clinical trials documenting dietary approaches to controlling hypertension. A team of doctors explores how the DASH diet system works, from choices in fruits, vegetables and low-fat diary products to the right serving portion and the influence of exercise.

Very Entertaining Story
This book turned out much better then I thought it would. I have read a number of books about the last days of World War Two in Berlin and this book captures that same feel. I thought the author does a good job in describing the atmosphere to the point that I could feel the tension and depression. The story is a good one with a solid plot. This book reads well with economic time successfully spent on character development. If you are interested in this period of time this is a very good fiction book that covers it.

The best world war II thriller yet!
As a self appointed WWII buff and historian i find Thomas Wisemans Novel/HistoryThe Day before Sunrise probably the best combination of history andNovel type thrills I have ever read. Mr Wiseman conveys such realism in his style that at times I actually could smell and feel the bombed out and hased feel of Berlin in it's death throws. The writing style and character development would make Michner jealous. If you would really like to be truly transported to Berlin in early 1945 than this is th ticket. I can say no more other than it's time to take a ride. Peter Guzzo pguzzo@xtalwind.net

Story of a Political as Well as Natural Disaster
To me this review does not do justice to the most compelling aspect of the book, which is how political pressure, and assurances of safety in the face of all evidence to the contrary, by governmental officials and other trusted leaders dissuaded the people of St. Pierre from evacuating the city in time to save their lives. I read this book many years ago and have forgotten some of the details, but this theme -- more popularly explored in "Jaws" and recently in "Isaac's Storm" -- has stayed in my mind. Most readers will never be threatened by a volcanic eruption, but this book is a somewhat grim reminder that our own leaders may be lying about impending natural disasters. Remember Pelee!

Excellent Disaster Book, Fascinating Story
Thomas and Witts tell the story of a week in May, 1902,when the Carrabean city of St. Pierre was obliterated by a volcanic eruption. When I first saw this book, I wondered how anyone could pen over 150 pages on a volcano that wiped a city out in seconds, leaving only two survivors. I thought there would not be much to write about. Boy was I wrong! It turns out that in the week prior to the eruption, St. Pierre was hit by landslides, a tsunami, and even a deadly snake infestation! Several hundred were killed before the great event itself. The final eruption is simply the climatic horror and can almost be seen as a blessing, putting people out of their misery. This book is probably hard to find now, but it is worth getting, and will interest just about everyone from the scientist to the casual reader.

A Holiday Treat
Thanksgiving is given a new point of view and retelling in this very special picture book. Jean Craighead George, the Newbery Medal-winning author of JULIE OF THE WOLVES, as well as nearly 100 distinguished nature books for young readers, presents the story of the first Thanksgiving with warmth, fascinating detail, and lyrical as well as informative storytelling. Thomas Locker's colorful, classical paintings beautifully complement the author's words. The story begins with the formation of Plymouth Rock, a huge, two-million year old glacial mass that comes to rest in Cape Cod. Then the Pawtuxet tribe arrives, earning their living from the land, including Squanto, who is later captured by Englishmen and sold into slavery. Across the ocean, Pilgrims seeking religious freedom set out on a perilous voyage to America. Upon reaching the New World, they must deal with many hardships including disease, starvation, and death. Still the Pilgrims endure. In the springtime, Squanto, freed from slavery and now a member of another Indian tribe, arrives, bringing peace to the people of Plymouth. He teaches them how to grow crops, catch fish, hunt deer and turkey, showing the Pilgrims the importance of respecting the land and using it wisely. In 1621, after a bountiful harvest, a great celebratory feast takes place for three days, in which the people gather and eat and play games--the first Thanksgiving. This story is a unique portrayal of historical events, always keeping the reader intrigued and awed, with its terrific writing and inspirational illustrations. As she does in every one of her books, Jean Craighead George reminds us of the need to honor our natural resources and every living thing on the planet. In this story, too, she sends a message of peace that will inspire every person and reach beyond one day in November, to give thanks every day for what we have.

The First Thanksgiving`
Want to know where Plymouth Rock came from and what it has to do with the pilgrims? What happened when the Mayflower finally sighted land? This is the book for you. The First Thanksgiving is history, community, geology, and science in a very beautifully illustrated and believable story of the colonization of Massachusetts. The pilgrims came to the New World looking for religious freedom only to be met by fear, death, hunger, and an insightful and helpful Pawtuxet, Squanto. It was from his willingness to share his knowledge that we have the celebration of Thanksgiving.
