A keeper
I've read the book and listened to the audio cassette, and it's hard for me to pick which one I like more. The book has more stories, it's true, but the cassette has Donald's lovely Southern drawl. He has an infectious manner of telling that makes car trips--no matter how long or short--out and out fun. I've never laughed or cried so hard as at Listening for the Crack of Dawn. The last story, "A Different Drummer," is by far my favorite, since it makes me do both. Donald Davis is truly one of America's best storytellers, for kids, teenagers, and adults. Buy this title, in whatever format, and you won't be sorry!

Donald Davis is a Great Storyteller!
Listening to the story is better than reading it. His accent and voice make the vivid stories come alive. His stories, about growing up in western North Carolina are nostalgic, yet the issues will appeal to anyone of any age. My children 9 and 15 love his tapes along with my 70 year old parents. He is one of our favorite people to listen to in the car on trips.

A wonderful book for the whole fanily
Donald Davis is a wonderful writer and story teller. My children love to hear his stories as well as I. It makes a long trip in the car much more fun.

Finally a book on the Jeff Davis Legion
The author expended a tremendous effort in researching the Jeff Davis Legion. He has created an interesting history of this unusual cavalry unit. Any one who is interested in the Confederate Cavalry will enjoy the detail information the author has dug out of the archives.

Great
The author obviously performed a great deal of research in order to extract such detailed and little known facts about the "Little Jeff". Truly a gem for all interested in the Civil War. Highly recommended.

Another hilarious romp by Donald Davis
What fun! The setting for the title story is--you guessed it--a big screen drive in theater from the '60s, where Donald and his friends worked while in high school. I was laughing out loud as I listened, and my husband had to come check on me. After I got him to listen, he was laughing out loud, too! "Dr. Franklin," the story on the flip side, is a little more serious, but still funny in places. Highly recommended!

Anyone who has had braces will find this hilarious
Donald Davis--whose humor is in the best tradition of American humorists--is at his funniest in this story. The experience of getting braces is wrapped within a larger story of first freedoms...being trusted by his parents to travel to the orthodontist on his own, finding out about a city larger than his hometown, etc. For family-audience humor, this is a sure winner. A great gift for a teen (ages 11 and up, really) who is just experiencing braces for the first time.

Delightful!
I love Donald Davis's storytelling tapes about his Appalachian childhood, and this one is no exception. "Christmas at Grandma's" is a 45-minute tape that has 3 autobiographical stories on it, told in Davis's engaging drawl. My 7-year-old daughter has typically zoned out when I've tried to share books-on-tape with her, but she was immediately taken with this one, and has listened to it 3 times now. Then we loaned it to a friend, and she and her kids listened to it 3 times as well. Perfect for a family holiday car trip!

The Storm Book
The beginning of the Storm Book, starts out with the build of a big storm. The storm first striked with lightning and thunder, something the young boy in the book hasn't heard or seen. The thunder and lightning leads to heavy rain. After the storm pasts, the boy asked what the curving, misty arch of color was. His mother told him that it was a beautiful rainbow.
I enjoyed the story very much. The words they used to describe the surrounding was very well done. This story could very possibly happen in real life. The pictures are very good. I hope you decide to take a look a this book, I'm sure you will be pleased...

Excellent book for showing how different people see storms!
I really enjoyed how the book described the different experiences people had with the same storm. I love storms so the book was that much more interesting to me!
