How to eat right all the time
Davis manages to transform a recipe book into a fascinating look into the biochemistry of food. Her books are the only comprehensive description I've ever found of practical nutrition, and this one is no exception. The technical information is made accessible and interesting, even for the general reader. The recipes are detailed, easy to use and often delicious when prepared to her instructions. Many of her ideas come from the great cooking traditions of the world. Her procedure for making soup stock, for example, is classically French a la Julia Child and just as practical. The difference here is that you'll know what makes soup stock incredibly delicious, highly nutritious and what your body does with it. Ever wonder why vegetables are easily overcooked? Davis explains the delicate enzymatic and structural changes that take place during cooking that can make broccoli either an appetizing green forest or a puddle of colorless goo. All of her main points are backed by journal research cited in bibliographical notes. Fascinating! Everyone should read these books!

Classic Health Information that WORKS!
Adele Davis' classic descriptions of vitamins, minerals and what they do should be on every one's shelf. She got it right and her classic books are the standard for getting and staying well. After all, body structure and chemistry have not changed and her suggestions and remedies WORK. It is a shame she is not still around to apply her expetise to some of today's tough health problems, but, she has left us with the basics to keep our bodies and immune systems tip top. This is a "go to first" book for many major health problems or to just "stay fit." Chances are, what ails you is a deficiency or combo of one. Just what are you deficient in? Check to see if the information works for you!!! The best part of the whole book is the Index. Use it well.

This book doesn't mess around--it's in the trenches with you
I have a bookshelf of tomes on board management. Each is valuable, in its own way.

But if I wanted to help a busy colleague manage a board more effectively, I'd hand him or her Secrets of Successful Boards. It's got just about everything a person needs to get the job done, and it's a fairly fast read.

Carol Weisman has assembled an impressive collection of essays, each covering a different aspect of board management, each from a different expert.

This book doesn't mess around -- it gets right into the trenches with you. Do you want to run a more effective meeting? It's right there. Does your board lack passion? Find out how to build a passionate board. Concerned about legal liability? There's a chapter devoted just to legal issues.

Perhaps most surprising is a chapter on Internet strategies for nonprofit organizations. Though it seems to go outside the "box" of board management, the Internet has become a hot topic for boards and I applaud the editor for including it.

The chapters are as follows: Building a Board with a Passion for Mission (Carol E. Weisman); Fund Raising for Newcomers to Nonprofit Boards (Charles D. Brown Jr.); The Job of the Trustee (Katherina M. Rosqueta); Making Nonprofit Board Meetings Work - or Averting Nonprofit Board Meeting Meltdown! (David M. LaGreca); Mission-Based Strategic Planning: The Key to Your Organization's Survival (Terrie Temkin, Ph.D.); Structuring Your Board to Achieve Maximum Results, or Which Comes First the Chicken or the Egg? (Mike Schroeder); Legal Issues: Reducing Risks of Personal Liability (Donald W. Kramer); Building a Strong Board - Executive Director Relationship (Fern E. Koch); People Raising: A New Perspective on Volunteer Resources (Susan J. Ellis); and Internet Strategies for Nonprofit Organizations (Steve Epner).

Illustrations
I thought that the illustrations accompanying Carol's masterpiece were simply outstanding. The fluidity of the pen strokes is reminiscent of a younger Van Gogh. The avant garde humor on par with the comedy banter of Chris Rock. Overall, an exceptional book!

Adelle Davis was pioneer in the nutrition revolution
Let's get well, indeed! In the late '60s and early '70, when it was difficult to find reliable, well-researched information on nutrition that was geared to mainstream readers, Ms. Davis published several books. My seven-year-old son was always dizzy and fatigued back then, and the doctor put him in the hospital for a weeklong battery of tests that turned up nothing. That's when someone introduced me to Adelle Davis's books. I read them with great interest and discovered that my child was perhaps exhibiting symptoms of vitamin C deficiency. I put him on mega-doses of C and he became a normal, healthy little boy within a week. The idea that some people need more vitamins than others had not occured to the medical profession back then. I used one of Adelle Davis's super-nutrition formulas on my cat who had been poisoned, had a green tongue, and was declared "almost dead" by vet...and the cat went on to live 19 years. I owe a great deal to this pioneering woman and recommend that anyone concerned about their health read this book and give it due consideration.

Top Notch Advice on Nutrition
Adelle Davis was a brilliant expert in the field of nutrition. Her advice on sensable eating and diet are so applicable and useful, but at the same time simple it will surprise you. No complexity here. She was light years ahead of her time in the field of nutrition, and it is demonstrated here in this great book. I highly advise seeking out her other titles from wherever you can obtain them because they are incredibly valuable. No household is complete without an Adelle Davis reference!

Absolutely essential nutritional reference
This book should be required reading for all health professionals, and anyone interested in their own health. Davis shows how inadequate the average diet is in supplying us the nutritiants we need, and shows how good nutrition can play a vital role in the recovery of many illnesses. It's all backed up by referenced scientific work, and it shocks me that the medical profession isn't more aware of these results. This book was written over 20 years ago, but we need it now more than ever.

Banal stuff
Just a rehash of other dictionaries and personal opinions. So what

REALLY PRETTY, A GREAT GIFT
A really pretty baby name book. I'm talking here about the yellow book with the Mary Engelbreit cover; I see this book has a number of versions. But the one I bought was just gorgeous. It's full of great names and has lots of lovely boxes packed with intriguing trivia. Apparently, when this book was first published in the 70s, it was the only baby name book to contain unusual names in addition to Mary and John. My mother still has one of the original copies (she named me with it!),but in my opinion this latest edition is even better. A timeless classic.

WHAT FUN!!!
Lots of great names from all over the world. This book has a real "internet" feel about it. It has all the timeless classics like Sarah, Emily, Joshua and Austin. Plus tons of appealing new names I hadn't thought of. I found the no-angst chapter on the psychology of naming my baby especially reassuring, and the section on the best ways to create a name was a blast!!
