Summary of Family Fortunes
Family Fortunes focuses on the rise and influence of the middle class in late eighteenth and early ninteenth century England. The book is divided into three distinct parts. The first section centers on "Religion and Ideology"; here, authors look at fractions among Protestant sects during their time period, and the mututally reinforcing ideas of domesticity and religion. The second section is called "Economic Structure and Opportunity." It begins with a discussion of middle class attitudes towards property, especially as it effects providing income for a family. The other discussion in this section looks at men and women's respective roles in the economy, focusing on men's action and women as the "hidden investment." The final section, "Everday Life: Gender in Action," looks at marriage, the respective roles of motherhood and fatherhood, defintion and importance of the home, how gender was registered and finally, middle class influcen in the reform-minded public sphere. Family Fortunes is a big, thick, informative book which is well worth reading for people interested in the rise of the middle class, and social or religious history. Though clearly scholarly in focus it is relatively accessible, and the use many different textual sources helps to illustrate some of the more dense parts of Davidoff and Hall's arguments.

Ocean Science for the common man
This book in question, i.e., Mapping the Deep: The Extraordinary Story of Ocean Science by Robert Kunzig, explains oceans science in ways that even the common man can understand. Recommended.

Ocean Science for the Casual Oceanographer
A wonderful and easy to read book about the history of Oceanography. When I first received the book as a Christamas gift from my wife, one of my first thoughts was "I hope it's not to dull." What a delightful surprise, Mr. Kunzig has woven a story of the ocean that is very entertaining and easily held my attention. His book includes chapters on the early explorers, their theories, their findings and their misunderstandings and their conflicts. He discusses the role that microscopic organism of the oceans play in the climate of our earth and our connection to them. I highly recommend this book.

Exploring the oceans
Exploration is sexier than understanding. That's probably why we say Newton discovered the laws of motion, rather than understood the relationship between mass, force and velocity. Amongst the many disciplines of science, perhaps none is so dominated by exploration as oceanography.

In this book, Robert Kunzig takes us on a tour of the exploratory deeds of ocean scientists that has lead us to our present knowledge of ocean science. From young scientists camped on coral cays, to biologists in deep-sea submersibles, and geologists climbing South American mountains, this is an exciting and fascinating read.

I would recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn about oceanography in an easy to read format. But really, this book is for people who want to get excited about oceanography. Perhaps you are considering a career in oceanography, or you are a professional oceanography, or just like science? No matter. I think you will come away feeling inspired by the deeds of marine scientists, and the ocean itself.

If I felt one dissappointment, it was that the issue of global climate change, and the role of ocean scientists in this critical science, was not given their due. I think we understand more about the climate than Kunzig gave us credit for. But this is a book about exploration, and climate change, sadly, is for the future.

Not just for Weight Watchers
This book has helpful information for Weight Watchers(tm) members, but it is also useful for making more healthful versions of your home favorites like beef stew, muffins, soups and other American-style dishes.

I hate having to serve one dish to my husband or guests, and another (less appetizing!) dish to myself, so this book is a big help to me. I particularly liked the Grilled Chicken Citrus Salad (because I love the combination of chicken and citrus in salads and grilling adds that gourmet touch) and I also liked the lower fat muffins and stews.

I don't feel I am making substitute diet food in the least, and I can even serve it to company. Now, that's a cookbook that is really useful! Just one caveat: you MUST watch your portion sizes. There is a fine brownie pie in here, but that doesn't mean you can wolf down a quarter of it and call it "diet."

So Good...No One Need Know that the Recipes Are Healthy!!!
Having joined Weight Watchers a few years ago, I purchased this book at a local bookstore. The first recipe I tried was Mushroom Barley Soup. That dish alone is worth the price of the book. As I live alone, I prepare a recipe, divide it into portions, seal each in a vacuum seal bag and freeze them for later use. I especially love the Chicken Cacciatore, Chicken Marsala, and Oven Beef Stew. It was terribly hot here today so I prepared a Tuna-Macaroni Salad. Yumm...and for five points, the servings are huge! And as a quick dessert, may I recommend the Brownie Pie. It takes minutes to prepare and has only two points a serving.
As the title of the review suggests, this book will work for everyone, dieting or not. Your family will love the recipes and you won't have to tell them that the food is low fat and healthy. I have over 500 cookbooks and this is one of my favorites. It will be one of yours too!

Simply the Best
This cookbook is wonderfull!!!! I am, by no means, a real good person in the kitchen. I've been on weight watchers for a while now and got tired of cooking seperate for me and my family. This book allows me to stay on my daily points and know that my family is eating healthy, as well. My husband and kids really love the recipes.
The recipes are quick and easy. A dummy like me can even make a successful meal.
I highly recommend this book. This book is a MUST HAVE for your kitchen!!!
