just the lyrical truth...
at turns painful and reassuring but always powerful, Daoust's poems are always alertly written. The book's namesake is a poem about the thorny love between the poet at 6 years and a 20-year old, but this potentially repulsive subject is so hypnotically worded as to cause addiction. Several pieces stick out in my mind, like "A New York Prayer", a needy plea for material boon, and "The Sleeping Angel", lush balm for the ear of desire. Buy it - a bewitching compendium of a seductively malign poet's work.

Titan ¿ The Graphic Novel -Well Written and Illustrated!
"Titan - the Graphic Novel" was GW's (Games Workshop, a gaming publisher and miniatures manufacturer) effort to better popularize their already well-liked 40k universe. It has been an outstanding success and is one of their better "promotion" products.

The story focuses on the experiences of one titan across a battlefront of the (generic sci-fi human) Empire. The experienced Titan pilot dies of old age and a younger trainee is forced to take over the helm. He, of course, is not well accepted by the older apparatchiks of the Imperium (in the Adeptus Mechanicus) and has to face several trials to keep his Titan. All of the combat in this novel faces Ork opponents.

The greatest attraction is to see the fine artwork of the novel. The titans are fleshed out with every nut and bolt. The pilots and crew of a Titan are defined to great satisfaction for the 40k enthusiast. I bought my novel to give me ideas how to convert 6mm scale Epic titans. "Titan - the Graphic Novel" was well worth my money for that reason alone. However, I don't think the story could stand well on its' own if it didn't already have an established fan base of 40k players.

I recommend this graphic novel for the GW 40k enthusiast and fan.

A wonderful resource for parenting ideas
This is one of the best parenting books I have read. Don't let the title dissuade you from thinking that this book is only for families with ADHD children. It provides many ideas for organizing and structuring family life to reduce stress and lower the amount of yelling. The ideas are constructive and positive while the roles of punishment and negative re-enforcement are minimalized. A few of the ideas Sharon Weiss, the second author, gave me helped with getting my children to do their chores and teaching them how to structure their time so homework, getting out of the house in the morning and bedtime are not so laborous and time intensive. The ideas presented are helpful for younger age children not yet able to read to teenager.

These techniques really work!
As an educational therapist and parent of two children, I found this book to be helpful both for my clients and my family. The ideas make sense and implementing them is straight-forward. I tried several of the ideas at home to see if they are easier than they sound...wow...instant changes in problem behaviors! For example, my four year old would not stay in bed at bedtime. Offering her an incentive (5 pennies if she stayed in bed), and a consequence (lose a penny for each time out of bed) stopped the behavior in one night. 90 minutes of arguing to zero on the first try. I highly recommend this book to parents of easy and not so easy kids.

Good For All Families
This book is SO useful, and you certainly don't need to have an ADHD or unusually challenging child to benefit from its advice. Our family found that even with nickle-and-dime problems like young teenaged girls "borrowing" each other's stuff, this book helped us out of the unending cycle of the kids doing something wrong and then us punishing them with everyone being angry at each other. The advice in the book is very specific and while you do need to be disciplined about your follow-through, it doesn't take the practice and special training of the "How To Talk So Your Kids Will Listen" approach (although there's nothing in here that would contradict that method; you could certainly work on them together).

This is not "holier than thou" book. The mother is very open about all the mistakes she has made and all the things that she will never be able to do perfectly. She's also honest about the times when she and her husband started to let things slide again and how they got themselves back on track. That was reassuring. The goal here is not to have a perfect family, but one that works better.

It is also a moving book. The little boy has written some sections, and if you think you hate yelling at your kids, his parts will remind you that it is even worse to be yelled at.

I'm sorry that all the links are to ADHD books because I really do think that any family can benefit from this book. What child isn't challenging?

So Easy! Even for a beginner!
I had been looking for an "Elephant" quilt for my elephant crazed 3 year-old for some time. I finally decided I would probably have to make him one myself. I have intermediate sewing skills but had never quilted before. This foundation piecing method is the way to go! The blocks turn out beautiful everytime. It is so easy and very addictive! There are so many different animal patterns in this book, from farm animals to zoo animals, to Australian animals and more. Something for everyone!!

A Fabulous Introduction into the World of Foundation Piecing
With this book you learn to easily foundation piece cats, cows, lions, monkeys, elephants, chickens, bunnies, pelicans, eagles, peacocks, butterflies, cardinals, hummingbirds, kangaroos, and soooooo much more with readily understandable instructions.

The book is a great reference for other sewing projects and consists of 112 pages so it's rather thin. The book covers basic embroidery stitches (chain, french knot, stem, and more) with directions and illustrations, ways to add borders with directions and illustrations, assembling the quilt top, binding, and quilting of the finished work. There's a section pertaining to fabric selection and sewing materials/equipment.

I'd never paper pieced in my life and this book covered all the bases to complete these mini-quilts in a short period of time with professional looking results. I've surprised several family members with my work!

If you need a quilting book with easy to make animals, purchase this book as you will not be sorry.

Artwork, not patchwork, beautiful quilting easily done
The cover of this book really does not do justice to the designs inside. They are truly beautiful works of art--unique and magnificantly simple in their construction. The Noah's Ark quilt is a classic. Particularly helpful are two examples of the same animal square with the different types of fabric. One can easily see the dramatic difference that selection of fabric and color make in the final design. As my first project as a quilter, I made the rooster from fat quarters as a birthday present for my sister. If I do say so myself, it looks fabulous! With Ms. Rolfe's techniques of foundation quilting you do not have to worry about cutting exact shapes (except once for the entire block), nor about grain of the fabric. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. For Xmas, I plan to make pot holders from the designs as gifs. I'm even thinking about tackling the Noah's Ark quilt--for myself! I ordered more of her books because I enjoy her easy-going manner to quilting and the professional looking results!
