Secret of "Flowers for Algernon"
The main charm of "Algernon, Charlie and I" is the revealed episodes behind "Flowers for Algernon", which make you understand (at least partly) why "Flowers's for Algernon", the author's acclaimed novel, is so increadibly compelling and moving - because it is not a pure fantasy, but because it is based on so much truth about us human being, our emotions and feelings, that the author had been observing and experiencing himself. You will find out that "Flowers for Algernon" is not about this poor guy who gone through extraordinary experience, but about all of us.

Read this book, you will leave with a greater appreciation.
Mr. Keyes exposes himself personally in this intimate autobiography. I was captured by his honesty, his sensitivity and his fluid writing style. I felt, as though I was a familiar friend and I gained and enormous appreciation for his dedication in writing "Flowers for Algernon". I look forward to more books by this gifted author. I hear his next will be science fiction / mystery.

A "must" for all Daniel Keys fans.
In Algernon, Charlie And I: A Writer's Journey, Daniel Keys reveals the life experiences behind his creation of the character Charlie Gordon, a young man whose quest for intelligence and knowledge parallels that of the mouse, Algernon, in his acclaimed novelette "Flowers for Algernon" (which has been optioned and is in production for a CBS made-for-tv movie. Both the novelette version, and the novel that followed, have been widely translated and remain part of many school and college literature course curriculums. Algernon, Charlie And I includes the author's original short novelette version and is a "must" for all Keys fans.

One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

this book is full of advanced topics, but the authors don't worry about the comprehension of the readers.

Yuck!
A romance that consists of a hero who has "purple bags under his eyes with an expanding waist line" and a heroine who is so cold diamonds could not cut her, was, well, boring. Zero chemistry between the two, Evelyn, the Countess of Goreham and Sir Hugo Mansfield, an addict for gambling and a lawyer. The plot of this novel is that Evelyn must stay unmarried, unattached and untouched for the year following her old husband's death. Five years earlier, Sir Hugo and Evelyn met one evening at a gambling establishment and, because of heavy losses, either she married the old Earl, who would then pay her debt, or go to jail. Since Hugo just lost all his money, and he was an addict to gambling, he could not help her. So she married the old Earl but never forgave Hugo for what happened. Seems silly to be so resentful that Hugo did not marry her as she only just met him that night and had spoken maybe 5 words before she lost her final bet. Now five years later, they meet up at her house party and someone -ohhh - is trying to kill her and Hugo tries to help. It is only in the last pages that he explains that he could not help her that night 5 years earlier because of his addiction and that fact that he was penniless. Bess Willingham is a smooth writer but the story was not engaging. Really, by the end of the story, who cared whether they got together or not!
