Canada and Australia won the war!
I loved this book. British and American historians have frequently overlooked the huge contribution of the Canadian and Australian forces in WW I, and this book is the remedy. I recommend this book to arrogant Americans so that they will finally learn that the US Army did NOT win WW I. You'll read about how incompetent US General Pershing was, and how the so-called "best-fed" army in the world faced starvation due to poor logistics. Canadians and Australians were the best fighters in this war, and this book tells you how they put the US, British (and of course, the German troops) to shame on the battlefields of Europe.
A valuable and unique perspective on the end of WW I.
Dancocks again approaches Canadian Military history with a fresh eye. His easy writing style and clear prose makes absorbing both the historical facts and their context deceptively easy. He uses a combination of regimental histories and Official Canadian and Imperial histories coupled with personal oral histories to highlight Canada's frequently unsung contribution to the end of the Great War.
Dancocks always relates the events of the battles to the men that are fighting them. This combination powerfully conveys the terror, horror, valour, motivations and insights of those who fought the "War to end all wars". Dancocks embodies all of his narrative with first person accounts that remind the reader of exactly how these campaigns were fought and by whom.
This book occupies a valued place in my military history library. The fact that the author continues to concentrate on Canadian subjects is just another bonus.

A great perspective on how the allies won the war
The author clearly shows how determined and well-led soldiers could achieve the goals set for them. Although Dancocks does not enter the into the wider strategic issues, he demonstrates that the Allies could win tactical victories, which is what Liddell Hart and others have denied since the war. The battle was costly to the Canadians, but it was a victory and the Germans suffered much more than their attackers.
