The Silver Pencil
The book was given to me by my cousin, Haley. I needed to do a book report on a book for school and I came across it. So I did it for a book report. I thought it was a wonderful book and very exciting to see what might happen next.

Janet is the main character and lives in Trinidad but then she moves to England. Her father gives her a silver pencil for Christmas. After Christmas, her father dies. She was very sad. She came to America to attended college to become a kindergarden teacher. She wrote a story with her silver pencil and got it published. She liked to write and wrote many stories.

It was a very interesting book and one that one would not want to put down. I recommend this book to teenagers as well as younger children who love to read. It would be an encouragement to anyone who likes to write stories.

A very fascinating book to read.
This book involves a girl named Janet. She expierences a death of her father. She also loves to write. This story based on Janet desciribes how her life begins at age nine reading the book Little Women ending older as being a teacher reading the same book, but with a whole different prespective. This book of my opinion is a wonderful book for all ages wanting to have a good book in there hands.

I read this book and it is a great book!
This book is a great book. It deals with a lot of good situations. The little girl is an extremly good writer. She moves from her home to scotland with her mother after the death of her father. Then they move back to England and she moves to Americia to become a teacher. There she moves in with a family and falls in love with the oldest son Stephen. Then they have to try and keep their love a secret.

Bonding
Lex Hixon's words float in the reader's mind like clear, sweet water. Hixon is not a philosopher or theologian. He is a lover. His words melt into the heart and rise one's level of awareness into a state of ecstatic bliss. Read this book and discover the Ramakrishna that Lex Hixon knew and loved. The Ramakrishna who believed all religions were ultimately guided by the same Godhead.

The Essence of the Divine
In this amazing book, Lex Hixon takes on the formidable task of trying to anticipate questions, thoughts and feelings that a reader may have on Spiritual Development/God Realisation and makes it a part of the Encounters of Sri Ramakrishna. It does not matter whether one has heard or read of Sri Ramakrishna before, Lex Hixon makes us aware of his presence nad grace in every page of the book. A very rare and enlightening book. Like a blessing.

One of the SWEETEST teachers around...
Ramakrishna was a heart so huge he envelops you directly off the page so beautifully conveyed by Lex Hixon. I got chills of sweetness from the passages directly quoted from this jewel of a human being....

Very Good. Insightful
I am a lover of all things Irish. So when I picked up this book and saw it had to do with an Irish Immigrant I started reading. Houseguest deals mainly with the interactions of people on a personal level and how those interactions impact on one or both of the people. I was especially interested in Edward's reflection on caring for his wife & young daughter. How guilty he felt for wanting to scream/run away. I wouldn't want people to think all Immigrants wind up living with the upper class, rent free for months. Not likely. Very good novel. The references to Edna O'brien are correct.

Stay a While
This was a happy find: a well-written, thought-provoking book that I had never heard of. The quiet tone and subtly shaded characters are reminiscent of Alice McDermott's best, and not only because they share an Irish heritage. The story moves forward and backward in time, building details introduced in passing into unforgettable characters. I especially admired the silk-dyeing lore -- I didn't know that Paterson, NJ had such a romantic history. A book to treasure.

The Read of the Year
This is simply a wonderful book, an elegant, straightforward masterpiece. It is a tearjerker without being maudlin, a love story without being overblown, a family drama that is poignant but never cliched. The story of a family pulled apart by death and circumstance‹and reunited in an unpredictable but thoroughly satisfying way, The Houseguest is a book you won't be able to put down‹and won't want to.

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain
I think the big iron pot is cool. The bears are scary. The big black cat was cute. I would tell a friend to read this book because there are very interesting things like the beginning poem and ending poem.

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain
I liked the spooky noises. I liked it when the bears came out. I liked Jonathan's stopping chant. I would tell a friend to read this book because it is exciting when the bears come. It is the most exciting when the bears are right by him.

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain
I liked it when the animals were eating. I liked it when Jonathan's uncles came walking up. I also like dit when Jonathan was hiding. I would tell a friend to read this book because my friend might like bears and likes hiking mountains.

Must have this book.
This is a great 'read aloud book' for younger children who need to know about the history of our nation. I accompanied this book with D'Aulaire's, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and got so much out of them all, much more than children can be getting in the class room today. I found my children (including myself) absorbed in the book wanting to keep reading more. I had checked this book out from the library but decided I needed this great resource in our home library so ordered it. I was pleased Amazon had it available.

Terribly out-of-date
Don't buy this book! It's terribly out-of-date. The author recommends using DDT to get rid of a dog's fleas. Most of the photographs (all forty or fifty years old) are so dark, the images are nearly indecipherable. There must be something better!

A Thick Handbook
Covers all the essentials of owning a cocker, including history, genetics, breeding, the cocker in the field, ring, and as a companion dog, first aid, nutrition, and more.
