A Great Roadmap for Ethical, Honest Business Dealings
Wait no more for the definitive book on negotiation. Mr. Shapiro has demonstrated that you can be successful in the cut-throat arena of sports representation without compromising your soul. Unlike some other self-proclaimed "super agents" and "Jerry Maguire wannabes", Mr. Shapiro has given this hopeful a ray of encouragement to stay the course and continue practicing the "power of nice".

mknapton@teksystems.com
I've read many a book on sales and negotiation and The Power of Nice is by far the most informative book I have read to date. It provides ethical; eaisy to understand philosophies and strategies for anyone in sales who wants to build long-term WIN-win relationships with their clients. It's a must read for the beginning as well as seasoned sales professional.

Building Relationships as opposed to Burning Bridges ...
Whether you are negotiating for business or in personal relations, "The Power of Nice" is well worth the read. You will find worksheets to assist you as well as tried and true methods of negotiation.

The three P's the author suggests have all the elements of success, they are prepare, probe and propose. Practical thinking and relationship building that works is the thrust of this book.

For me, the greatest portion of the book has to do with personal negotiations. Deflecting emotion and problem/conflict solving that works. Probing to find out what the other guy wants and needs so you can propose a win-win solution. Sound advise that works.

I am a business women who has attained a certain level of success. But it was the applications to the many teenage conflicts that I had encountered that gave me the greatest respect for the authors. Using their techniques in my business life had been easy. After reading now I was opening my eyes to what these same techniques could do for me in my personal relationships.

The chapter titled, "Difficult Negotiators" was filled with insightful and practical people skills. Coming from the Baltimore area, I also enjoyed the Cal Ripken-Peter Angelos points of reference.

For young people entering the business world this book should be required reading. For those that still subscribe to the kill or be killed mentality of doing business, I would also recommend this book.

Step By Step
This is really a review of a review. I gave one of my best friends a copy StepWise after he remarried. The other day he said, "That book you gave me has been a big help. It has helped me keep perspective. It's not easy putting a new family together. It takes patience, humor and a whole lot of love. It (StepWise)is a wonderful book for parents who find themselves with a new family."

it's about time
It's about time someone approached stepparenting in an honest way. It's hard! But it can be enriching if you take the right attitude. That's what they show you how to do in Stepwise. They have a real sense of humor which is a MUST for stepparents and stepchildren. They're right, it is like coming into a movie that's already started and not wanting to ask dumb questions about what's going on. Buy this book, memorize it, and give it to other stepparents.

Raising stepkids can be funny and fun
This book says it all. In fact, I think I said some of these things and the authors read my mind. When I went through the stepdad routine, I was ready to give up until I saw it from the kids eyes, which is what the writers of Stepwise did. The book is very funny but every funny idea is really a way to get connected with your kid. I have gone to see really bad movies with my stepchildren and listened to rap music. Just like they say in the book, sometimes you start to like the movies and music yourself. I even went to the mall with my stepchildren. I have at least ten stepparent friends and they're all getting this book from me. My stepkids liked the book too. It's really just about being a good parent who isn't so uptight.

Poignant and thought-provoking
This book should be read right after reading James Agee's Let Us Now Praise Famous Mem. Unfortuantely I read it over four years before I read Agee's work. When I read this book--in Feb 1996--I wrote to myself: This is a book Newt Gingrich and the crazy House freshmen should read--people who are so intent that those who cannot make it on their own should not make it.

Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction 1991
Unfortunately, the synopsis left out that this book won the Pulitzer for Non-fiction in 1991. Maharidge and Williamson followed the footsteps of James Agee who had profiled sharecroppers during the Depression. They found their decendants, and showed that while cotton and sharecropping had died, rural poverty for these families had been passed down to new generations. The front section of the book is a series of photographs by Williamson, and they are tremendous. Moreover, in their reporting, they filled a gap left by Agee by finding a black family of sharecroppers to add to the others profiled. This is a tremendous book. It works on multiple levels, giving both the sweep of Southern social and economic history and bringing it down to individuals. Beyond that, the book is a metaphor for our own time. "If we understand the death of cotton," Maharidge writes in this book, "we understand many things about modern America." This is a tremendous work, highly readable and moving. The recognition these two craftsmen received for it is well-deserved

Very Interesting!
This is a very well-written book for teachers. The author seems to know something about every subject that might be related to composition--the bibliography alone should be required reading for all prospective teachers; it's nearly 30 pages. I recommend this book very highly.

A "must read" for teachers
This is the most comprehensive book I've ever seen on composition and teaching. I mean, it has everything--psychology and writing, linguistics and writing, reading and writing. Also, the book goes way beyond theory and research to explain in clear language how an ordinary teacher like me can actually apply theory and research in the classroom. This is a really fine book, and I recommend it to everyone.

Brings Back Great Memories
I picked up this book at the store and just couldn't put it down! In fact, I bought 10 copies to give to all of my best friends. "Just the Two of Us" put my memories into words better than I could have myself. It is easy, fun reading that everyone will appreciate and enjoy. The authors Ms. Small and Mr. Dale really capture the beauty of friendship in this wonderful book.

Thanks Friend
The smiles and good feelings this gave me in the bookstore at 8:30 at nite after a long day made my evening. You have to have a good friend to love it and then you realize how fortunate you are! It is easy reading and wonderful.

A "Must Have" for Anyone who liked "Let Us Now Praise...."
First introduced to "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" by James Agee and Walker Evans through a PBS Documentary, which inspired a dash to the library to read the book iteself, it wasn't until years later I went back to the library to see if anyone had ever followed up on the story. Confronted with the then new computerized "card catalog" system, I wondered how I might search for any related writings when it dawned on me what a perfect title would naturally evolve from the verse the first book title was taken: ..And Their Children After Them. Imagine my amazement when I tried that title, and there it was! Maharidge and Williamson have followed in Agee and Evans footsteps to give readers "the rest of the story" of the tenant farmers' families and grandchildren, as well as the stories of Agee and Evans themselves. I congratulation them on an excellent book, and offer thanks to the families and their descendants for sharing their lifestories. Their lives did not take the path predicted for them by Agee: life refuses to be harnessed by prediction. Some went farther than anyone could have anticipated, while others came to a place, if possible, even worse than expected. As a second generation American, descended from Polish and Prussian immigrants who lived comparable lives, but who were blessed to own their own land, I identified closely with these stories, from the first page of "Let Us Praise" to the last page of "And Their Children".

Bailing Out: The Healthy Way to Get Out...
This is an outstanding book for anyone who is even THINKING about leaving their relationship, and is at least as good as TOO GOOD TO LEAVE, TOO BAD TO STAY. I wish I had had this information sooner, but definitely better late than never. They offer excellent advice about how to prevent repeat this tragedy of ill-chosen people for mates. I personally hate leaving, hate saying good-bye, and have a strong need to take responsibility for what is happening in my relationships by owning my part and doing what I can to improve the relationship. However, perhaps I've done this TOO much with the wrong people, and I've paid for this. Extremely healthy people may be hard to find, but aren't they worth waiting for, and in the meantime I have more to give myself when I ensure that all of my associates and intimates are healthy and nurture me. I think I'm way more likely to get what I want out of life and relationships when I choose wisely in this manner.

Go ahead with self respect and with autosteem
Best book to have a good way to go out from bad relationships, is like you have a personal doctor with your personal treatment, help you to find out your own solutions and motivate you to go ahead loving yourself, and helping you to understand a better way to love, to live, to breath, to be happy, please give you a chance to recover your integrity, your phisical and emotional health...

Boring summation of two fascinating women and queens
I love both of these women and their place in history, but Plowden's work leaves me cold. This could have been a fascinating, gripping, dynamic fiction tale of love, ambition, politics, history and royalty such as Susan Kay's "Legacy". Despite the alluring title, it's not. Not worth buying.

Factual and a fun read
Ms Plowden does a great job of keeping to the facts and keeping your attention. A must have for anyone interested in or required to learn about English and European history.

WONDERFUL!
I read this book for a British History class and loved it. Plowden makes the history of the relationship between Elizabeth and Mary come alive with many anecdotes. She describes in such detail the way the two lived and the era that the reader can almost visualize it.

Wonderufl read - not just for a class but for pleasure-reading as well!

anyone who's ever been a bridesmaid should buy this book
The illustrations are so wonderful -- I love the cute little baby dressed in the ruffles and satin of cast-off bridesmaid dress. No matter what the bride says (or how nice she is), you won't wear it again! That's where this great collection of wacky ideas comes in. I loved it!

Silly uses for never-to-be-seen-in-again bridesmaid dresses.
I received this book as a bridesmaid gift and loved it. What a fun and clever idea! The illustrations are what really made me chuckle.

Wedding season is almost upon us again...
We all know it's easier for men, they only have to rent the tux. Simple and basic, the most they have to fear is a wild cumberbund, or the color white. But women by tradition are at the mercy of the bride and her taste for plunging necklines, ruffles, and fuschia. Unlike the returnable tux, post-wedding, women are left with a dress too sentimental to throw away; too horrific not to hide, and one familiar place to banish it. But Cindy Walker has sounded a call to bridesmaid dresses everywhere to emerge from their closets! In an age of recycling and Martha Stewart, 101 USES FOR A BRIDESMAID DRESS presents dozens of inane alternatives to entombment to counter every bride-to-be's insistent 'you'll wear it again.' This book presents bridal party fashion as the ultimate in chic, with the bridesmaid dress as: The perfect blind-date look, how to be dressed for dinner with your (soon to be ex-)lover's parents, or what to wear to insure you'll be turned down for that Grand Jury. Or as Walker offers, why not turn your bridesmaid dress into gifts like: spectacular baby clothes for the happy couple's first child, a new jogging suit for Grandma, or a custom jockstrap for the athlete in your life. From lavender taffeta to trampoline, and canary silk to surfboard cover, the nonsensical suggestions offered in this book belong in every bridesmaid's survival kit. Whether you need to humor attendants, cheer up a friend, or figure out some way to make use of those torrents of tulle, 101 USES FOR A BRIDESMAID DRESS is the perfect irreverent gift for the ladies in your life with whom you swap bridesmaid horror stories, or for whom you have picked out the most darling red, white, and blue sequined cocktail dresses for your Fourth of July Wedding.
