Evolution of Status
John D'emilio's book clearly make the point about the minority status of the homosexual in America. The start of the first organizations to promote a homosexual presents, with their naive belief that they would be excepted, to the more militant efforts in the early sixties. D'emilio has documented carefully the many events of importants that led up the the stonewall riot. Making it clear that the fight didn't begin at stonewall, but many years before. He talks in detail about the different organizations that started, and how they developed and changed as the struggle continued. D'emilio did his homework on this one without question. If you were ever curious about the events that started the gay revolution this is a must read.

The Beginning of Gay History
Before this book, gay history simply did not exist. There were a few tomes about great historical figures who happened to be gay, and Jonathan Katz's landmark "Gay American History," but virtually nothing about the gay men and women after World War II who fought amazing hostility, made countless strategic errors, suffered profound personal losses, and still managed to organize a movement that changed the way we all view individual rights in a civil society. Even publishing the first edition in 1983 was an act of courage.

Today gay history is a thriving discipline, and the story has been told countless times, often more engagingly. For general readers, I recommend John Loughery's "The Other Side of Silence" and Lilian Faderman's "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers." But for students and scholars, this is a model of historical research and an inspiration.

Very disappointing......
Great title - bad book. Poorly developed characters and a plot that does not take you anywhere.

Sexy and Seductive
I was first tipped off to Vicki Hendricks' writing in Naked Came the Manatee, a good collaborative effort. This book is also quite good.

In Iguana Love, we are introduced to Ramona Romano, a very unique woman who easily speaks and acts her mind. Separated from her husband, she tries to invigorate her life with scuba diving and bodybuilding. In her quest of sleeping with many men, she falls for a seedy character named Enzo, who happens to be her diving instructor. He leads her down a negative path until we reach a very suprising ending that will knock you out of your socks.

This book is very erotic, especially as we take a ride with Ramona on her wild romp and conquerings. The writing is graphic, raw, and very straightforward. Hendricks holds nothing back with her protagonist. Throw in the Miami background, and you've got a fairly hot novel.

Although some of the characters were somewhat one-dimensional, they all seemed to be nicely developed, and the plot was well drawn out. This was a quick read, and one that was quite enjoyable, if not merely for the shocking ending, not to mention the wonderful twists and turns. Inguana Love is a nice, yet far from wholesome, adventure.

An Enjoyable Book
I found Iguana Love to be an enjoyable book. Ms. Hendricks is building a solid reputation as a writer with a unique voice. I recommend that any reader searching for fresh material and a fresh approach to literary subject matter Iguana Love.

Excellent series of novels; for those who love comics.
Being a young man (27) this series of books took me back to the days I used read comics with my friends instead of doing homework. The action that just would not allow you to put the book down is present in these Riftworld books, and it doesn't take forever to develop either. The plot thickens and turns just like the story lines in the Marvel universe, only now there's the imagery that only a novel can bring. This exactly what I've been waiting for, being an adult who loved the comic book art and plot twists, I yearned for more 'story', Riftworld delivers, as do many of the new Marvel novels. Can't wait for the movie :-)

This book is "just okay."
Nothing real spooky in this book. It's more home decor and not fright. I was looking for a little bit scarier. And there weren't many recipes, not many costumes and nothing real spectacular. It seems like a Martha Stewart takeoff. I got one good treat idea and one good paper bag/candle idea and that's about it. I think there are a lot of other books that would be more worth buying. I was very glad I checked it out at the library first. That's what I recommend most. Go to your library and take a look at it first. I was glad I did.

A FUN book that gets you in the mood for Hallowe'en!
I love this book! The craft projects are beautiful, functional, and diverse, presented beautifully with great photography and art production value. Notes and articles about various aspects of Hallowe'en are interspersed throughout, making this resource much more than just a how-to book. It's a joy to look at, whether you're in the mood to read, create, or just look at great seasonal photos and illustrations.

Nice easy projects for fall decorating.
Nicely written and illustrated with color photos of virually all projects. Projects are not too complicated, but more decorative than scary. More fall oriented than strictly Halloween. I prefer Martha Stewarts book; it was smilar but more original.

Not nearly as interesting as one would think
The book reads very textbook-y, and already that's one strike against it. There were a few interesting things, like bundling beds and the fact that Pilgrims thought that women had to climax to conceive but other than that, nothing too insightful about sex.

Entertaining and Informative
Intimate Matters provides a comprehensive analysis of the history of sexuality in America through an engaging and thoughtful narrative. It is useful for the professional historian--it is well documented with references to existing historical literature on the topic (although it is not original research). However, it also will prove very interesting to the casual reader.

The book itself provides a broad descriptive introduction to the history of sexuality and reproduction from the colonial era to the present, but also presents a clear argument that is easy to follow. The authors claim that sexuality in America has gone through three distinct phases, from family governed sexuality in the colonial era, to privatized but conservative sexuality in the nineteenth century, to our era of comparative sexual freedom, often governed by consumerist values, in the twentieth century. Beyond that, it is simply fun to read.

The book does use language that might be considered objectionable by some, but these words are quoted directly from contemporary historical sources. They help to give an honest impression of the way sexuality was discussed in the past. It is a very good book.
