A Classic.
This book is a classic. A real monument of culture, produced by this philological mind of the twentieth century. Its pages have consistently revealed the powerful medieval literature, totally breaking the idea of a dead age to literature. His commentary on St. Augustine`s Confessions (chap.IV, rethoric), as well as the excerpt of St. Augustine`s work that he brings to us, are pearls of the literary critic. We can hardly find nowadays an erudit of this kind.
Yes, his work has a lot of problems, maybe even some errors and some avoidable historicism. Yes, his work is an old one. Yes, his bergsonian introduction is boring. Yes, some of his interpretations are doubtful.
But you can`t really pass through the Middle Ages without reading this classic.

A Life-Transforming Experience
Having struggled with an eating disorder for the past 10 years of my life, I was certain that I would never have a healthy relationship with food again. But, then a good friend gave me Geneen's book, and I have not looked back since on those doubtful thoughts. This is a truely incredible program that, when followed and supplemented with Geneen's books "When Food Is Love" and "Feeding the Hungry Heart", can and will take the word "diet" out of your vocabularly forever. I have never felt better about myself and have never actually lost weight while still eating anything I wanted.

has changed my attitudes toward myself and toward food
Roth has created a wonderful, insightful compilation of exercises which, when combined with a lot of hard work on your part, can change your life. She will change your feelings about yourself and about why you eat. The exercises take a long time to get through because they are so emotionally demanding, but it is a worthwhile process. If you are ready to take a hard look at what really motivates you to open your cupboard, and examine those dark feelings you hide even from yourself, buy this book.

Book caused me to start a small group
I always wanted to start a group...after reading this book I was able to start a small group. It is working well so far and I am eager to change my negative thoughts and behaviors.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum
Our public schools are run by a leftist cabal so extreme that it's presumably a holdout Communist sleeper cell that didn't get the memo about losing the Cold War. Our fiscal state meanwhile makes private education about as pragmatic and as likely as a family trip to Neptune. This dual catastrophe leaves home schooling as the sole educational option for our twins, who at four are about to enter our tutelage. Descending from a long line of professionally useless gentlemen who were schooled largely in dead tongues and the musings of Sophocles, I leapt for this sturdy volume as soon as I spied its title. As it turns out, the authors stretch the definition of "Classical" rather much (I don't believe that computer programming was discussed much in the Forum, for instance). But they do ground their curriculum in admirably traditional topics like Great Books, Math, and Rhetoric, even as they venture into modern realms that are probably necessary topics if one is ever to adroitly "short" some stock, or whatever it is that one does these days. Old school "homies" like myself will also take heart in the fact that there is a full chapter dedicated to Latin (however at seven pages it's about the shortest one in the book).

Clear and compelling reading
When we decided last year to try homeschooling, I checked out every book on the subject from our public library. After I had read all of them, a friend recommended The Well Trained Mind. It was by far the best book of all that I read. It presents a clear and compelling case for homeschooling and for classical education. The authors lay out, in the clearest possible fashion, a blueprint for classical education and a framework for building it. They explain what to do, how to do it, and most importantly, WHY - all important to a novice like me.

We have followed the recommendations of the Well Trained Mind for nearly a year now, tailoring it to fit our family's needs, and I am extremely pleased with the results. Whether or not our children ever go to college, I am confident that the ideas and language and literature that they are exposed to now in their classical education will equip them with the tools for a lifelong pursuit of learning. We don't do EVERYTHING the book recommends - the authors themselves point out that no one could! But I find the wealth of information a tremendous resource - I'd rather have a feast of ideas than a strict bread-and-water curriculum.

Read this book with an open mind. Even if it does not fit your own philosophy of education you will certainly benefit from some of its ideas and suggestions.

For My Children's Sake
After reading dozens of books and articles on both homeschooling and education in general, The Well-Trained Mind was the one that truly ignited my passion for educating my children! While the book goes into great detail on the "hows and whys" of classical education, the authors constantly remind the reader to tailor the program to fit the needs of their child and family. The Well-Trained Mind is perfect for the home educator who wants a curriculum schedule completely spelled out, and also for the parent who wants to follow the general format of a classical education, while having the freedom to pick and choose according to their preferences.

The book gives wonderful descriptions of the three stages of classical education, and explains the change in focus for each stage. Why is it that 11 and 12-year-olds argue about everything? Why do young childen ask "why"? What gives teenagers their drive for self-expression? TWTM shows home educators how to teach according to their child's natural development.

The prospect of educating a child through high school was a real concern of mine, but TWTM outlines a fantastic program for upper level education that will challenge and prepare your kids for a career or college education. And again, the authors encourage you to adapt the curriculum toward your child's interests and abilities. I now feel I can help my children prepare for college; they will have the writing, thinking, and research skills they will need to excel in college and beyond.

Add to title ...for people who don't know the difference
Simply put... This book lost its integrity with its first incorrect solution.

Title is misleading.
This book's title is misleading. It should be titled something like "The Big Book of Brain Teasers". It should NOT have the words "IQ Tests" in its title. If you want an accurate assessment of your IQ, look elsewhere. Here's why:

1) It contains too many culture-specific questions. A valid IQ test (i.e., one that "accurately" measures one's intelligence quotient) should contain few, if any, culture-specific questions. This book contains a lot of them.

2) It also contains too many questions that have multiple "correct" answers. Once again, in a properly constructed IQ test, for each question there will be one, and ONLY one, correct answer. This book contains numerous questions that could be answered "correctly" in more than one way.

In short, if you enjoy solving puzzles, etc., for fun, then you MIGHT enjoy this book (I say "might" because you may very well end up being frustrated by the multitude of questions which could be answered "correctly" a number of ways), but if you're looking for a properly constructed IQ test that will give you an accurate measurement of your intelligence, you'll likely be disappointed. I sure was.
