A great resource for anyone interested in Italian cemeteries
Another fine addition to Culbertson and Randall's series of cemetery guides, this volume covers sixteen sites in Rome (including the Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica and the Protestant Cemetery) and its environs, Umbria and Tuscany, Florence (including Santa Croce, the English Cemetery and the Duomo), Emilia-Romagna (Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Predappio and Rimini), Northern regions (including Milan and Padua), and Venice (including the cemetery island of San Michele).

This is an invaluabe guide for travel in Italy. There are directions for getting to each site, maps of the cemeteries, and many photographs. There is a good bibliography and a complete index.

A great resource for cemetery tourists traveling to Paris
Another fine volume in the series by Culbertson and Randall, this book has four separate tours of the legendary Pere Lachaise, as well as coverage of the Pantheon, St. Etienne-du-Mont, Montmartre, St. Vincent, Les Invalides, Passy, St. Germain-des-Pres, the Catacombs, Montparnasse, La Chappelle Expiatoire, St. Denis, and some suburban sites.

Interesting narrative fleshes out very complete information: directions to each site, maps of each site, biographical sketches of more illustrious permanent residents, and quite a few photographs.

An invaluable resource for anyone interested in cemeteries, travelers to Paris, or (especially) both!

A must to pack when traveling to Paris.
This book is a delight. While it introduces us to the famousresidents of Paris' cemeteries, we live the ups and downs of the humancondition. The soap-opera foibles and the real tragedies of politics, religion, art and science are all enjoyably told. Walking through the cemeteries of this wonderful city is a true experience that will make the traveler appreciate all the notables who selected Paris as their home.

Terrific guide to London cemeteries
Sixteen cemetery sites are listed and many graves discussed in this fine addition to the series by Culbertson and Randall: Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Bunhill Fields, St. Paul's, Brompton, Kensal Green, Highgate and St. Michael's, St. John-at-Hampstead, Hampstead, Golders Green and St. Marylebone, Putney Vale and St. Mary Magdalene, St. Nicholas in Chiswick, and Windsor Castle and Frogmore.

I've used this book as well as Permanent Italians and Permanent Parisians, and have not had the bad experience others have mentioned; in my experience the directions are fine, and I've visited maybe half of all the places they've written about in these three books.

Names are highlighted so they're easy to find, and there are plenty of maps and photographs.

This is a great book if you are interested in adding these sites to your travels in London.

Nice work-
I prefered this to Permanent Italians, perhaps because I knew who more of the people were? Nice biographical sketchs of many of the people mentioned and very nice directions on taking the underground to each cemetery.... well I have never been to London, I assume they are good directions :o) It has a small map of each cemetery with marks designating where the more notworthy monuments are located. It's a great boo if you love cemetries and possible valued beyond money if you are visiting London and love cemeteries. I believe it is part of a set with Permanent Italians and Californians.

Excellent companion for a visit to London cemeteries
I used the book on visits to some of the most interesting London cemeteries. It has good maps and many details on the various famous residents. I found the historical data quite accurate and some of the stories very amusing. Highly recommended!

Intresting Plot, not so great book
The beginning was certainly enough to get me hooked in, but as I continued reading, the characters were people that seemed more of people actually made up by the authors mind, other than real people--which they should be like. Also the plot is somewhat obscure, and as I read more into it, it wasn't very believable. The parts that were supposed to be very shocking, sometimes made me laugh instead. But then again, I don't read many mysetries, so maybe I just don't take them as seriously.

did NOT exceed my expectations!
I do not normally pick up a book and hate it at first sight, but so it was with this one. At first I felt there must be something wrong with me, and tried reading it again. However, I feel obliged to say that at times the discriptions and explanations were long-winded, and his attempts at analysis were not particularly original.

Don't believe everything you read...
I've been using Permanent Californians for roughly 7 years now;while it provides great biographical information and a decent basicguide to who has been interred where, Culbertson and Randall have failed miserably in their efforts to provide specific gravesite locations. I have wasted too much precious daylight in vain assessments of which tree they presume to be the largest within a particular cemetery section, ultimately searching around each and every tree in said section only to conclude that the book is just plain wrong. I've noted many typos with regard to section numbers/grave numbers, and had to learn the hard way *never* to trust their directions as gospel truth. Very useful as a basic reference, but be advised: don't expect much in the way of orienteering.

Until you know the facts.....
This is a fun sort of a book which has a lot of interesting biographical information pertaining to those 'permanent Californians'. However, if you plan to use it as a guidebook you'll find that directions are often confusing and inaccurate. There are several books currently available which provide better information for locating burial sites and (for that matter) more comprehensive listings per cemetery. Just don't view this book as being accurate re: grave locations/directions. The end result will be total frustration.
