A great tour of famous horseracing facilities.
This is a beautiful book, filled with the talented Mr. Reeve's paintings of famous race horses posed against the background of famous race tracks. I thoroughly enjoyed his narration of how and why he chose to paint each horse at each track. If you enjoyed Royal Blood, you will enjoy this book also. It is well worth purchasing - for your own collection or as a special gift.

Crown Jewels of Thoroughbred Racing : Original Paintings
A fascinating journey in the Racing world through the eyes of a very talented Artist. Highly reccomended for Horse enthusiast as well as Horse painters.

Great
As Mr D. is related to a lot of royal families in Europe, except maybe the Dutch one, there is lot to be learned here. It would be nice, now that a lot of things have changed, including, I suppose, his opinion about the faux Anastasia, to have an update.

As his book is mentioned in the reference section of a lot of recent books about the Romanovs, it was a great pleasure for me to finally get hold of it.

Wonderful, interesting reading, written by a very "sympathique" person.

Excellent
This book is an invaluable source of remembrances of what happened to the extended Russian Imperial Family post-revolution. Not too much on the spy business, but wonderful detail and many new stories pre- and post- 1917 of European Royalty. Mr. Chavchavadze is related to nearly all major Royal Houses, with complete geneological charts. His style is absorbing, readable, with much wit and elegance. My only regret is that there is no current sequel, after all the events and changes in Russia and Georgia since 1990, the publication date.

Satisfying and very British
In 1936, Hitler is marching the Germans toward war, Franco is beating back the Republicans in Spain, and the English upper class is trying to hold onto a terrible secret--the new King, Edward, has fallen in love with a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson and is talking about marrying her. Lord Edward Corinth is called in to help with a vital task. The King's former mistress has stolen letters the King wrote to Wallis--letters that go beyond matters of the heart to discuss his sympathies toward the Nazi cause. If they fall into the wrong hands, not only the King, but the entire English monarchy may fall.

Edward agrees to help, but before he can persuade his friend to return the letters, she is killed and the letters vanish. Edward is the leadins suspect. Together with his friend, communist and newspaper reporter Verity Browne, Edward tries to get to the bottom of the mystery. But, can he trust even his friend Verity or will she, when she learns the truth, tell the Communist Party the truth about the letters and lead to the very overthrow that Edward has tried to prevent?

Author David Roberts writes convincingly about the fascinating period between the first and second world wars. The depression has radicalized all of Europe and both fascists and communists march and clash in the streets. With its message of power and elitism, fascism is popular with the upper class, even the King. Verity's struggles with her loyalties to country and party ring true. Edward is charmingly elite, yet cannot avoid the attraction toward the energetic Verity.

HOLLOW CROWN combines a critical period of history with convincing and detailed characters and a solid mystery to deliver a satisfying and compelling read.

Julian of Norwich-a woman who knows the Lord
In a very searching time of my life, this book was given to me by a dear friend (who will receive her crown one day). It truly kindled a fire within me to "press toward the goal of the high call of God". As a nun who lived during the 14th century, Julian of Norwich was not affluent, influential or even in a large community. She was a nun in a small convent. God chose to heal her as she was dying, and then use her to speak to us today in a way that will create a fire within you to know Him. The obvious changes were made to put the book in a readable, updated language form, breaking down it into daily devotionals. Yet you continue to feel the heart of Julian. Yes, Julian of Norwich was truly a woman with a deep love for and intimate relationship with the Lord. May we all find such a place.

A must-read for any fantasy fan
This is, I believe, Robin McKinley's magnum opus. This book is often hard to locate, buried in the young adult section where it only half-belongs. Yes, this tale is about a teenage heroine, but the subject matter, her trials and emotions, are not limited to that audience. (Note to booksellers-By the way, most avid young adult sci-fi and fantasy fans have been reading from the adult section for years-you might do better to rethink the placement of these types of books.) Anyway, this novel tels the story of Aerin, arguably one of the most well-written and believable heroines out there. Her feelings of ineptitude and clumsiness are universal, yet her unknown powers don't develop miraculously, deus ex machina style, but are fought for and gained as a result of this fight. The narrative twists and turns in surprising ways, and the tale doesn't always turn out the way we originally think it will, and yet the turns never feel out of place. This is a novel from a whole other world, and yet it feels real. The characters are true-to-life and honestly drawn by this masterful author. This book would definitely draw someone into the fantasy genre.

Great Fantasy for All Ages and Genders
For years this book sat on the shelf of my high school's library staring at me while I obstinantly refused to read it. It's not that I didn't like fantasy; it's just that I had had a few bad encounters in the past with "feminist" fantasy (e.g. Marion Zimmer Bradley), and I wasn't interested in reading another grrl power, male-bashing fantasy novel. I must have just assumed it was like that since it had a female heroine.

Finally, years later (I'm 22 now) I returned to it with a more open mind and a positive review from my wife. I thought it was one of the most captivating fantasy novels I've read. I couldn't put it down. If you've ever felt like the outcast among your peers or like you just don't fit in you'll be able to identify with the main character. If you're introverted and prefer the company of books to people (and many of the people who will bother to read this book are like this) then you will find a soul mate in Aerin. It doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl, this book will appeal to anyone who likes a good story and knows what it's like to have to "prove" yourself in order to gain acceptance.

This is my favorite book ever.
You'll have to forgive me for my less than poetic review title, but there's only one way to say it -- for my money, this may be the best novel ever written.

I discovered this book when I was in the sixth grade, and I have read it at least two or three times a year, ever since. I'm now 23, and the book has lost none of its power or magic in all of those readings. If anything, it's only gotten more powerful, as the subtleties of Aerin's story become more clear with time and experience.

A richly written novel with excellently rendered characters, this book is perfect for a reader of any age or gender. But I would like to point out that it may be especially good for young women -- Aerin is no passive heroine, and although she struggles to understand her place as a woman and a daughter in her father's court, she does not "buckle" to the pressures of society. Instead, she becomes simply -herself-, and her people love and respect her all the more for her voice and accomplishments. That's a message that a lot of young women these days need to hear -- I know it's one that I needed, and this is one book that has helped me become who I am, without apologies.
