Great story about how to Let It Ride!!
It took me years to find a copy of this, but "LET IT RIDE" is one of my favorite movies. Finally, only 3 weeks after requesting it at my local library on an inter-library loan, here it was! I was not disappointed at all. Most of the best bits and lines in "LET IT RIDE" originate in "GOOD VIBES", and though the ending differs somewhat from the film, it's not a huge difference(like The Natural, for instance). I've never read any of Jay Cronley's books, but if they're all this funny... ... If this is reprinted, I'll definitely snap up a copy, & until then, I'll keep looking for a reasonably priced used copy, & keep wearing out my video. It was worth the wait

"Let It Ride"
This book is the basis for the movie "Let It Ride" with Richard Dreyfuss. It is the story of an unlucky gambler who has a very good day.

The best book on pony racing ever!!!!
This is the ultimate cavallo cavalcade. I loved it before I lost everything at the track. Jeff Cordtz

In reading the first chapter I laughed so hard that it hurt.
Walking Papers by Jay Cronley is one of the funniest books I have read in my entire life. The main problem I had with the book is that while reading the first chapter I laughed so hard it hurt. I had tears streaming from my face and had to actually put the book down. The "problem" is that while the rest of the book is very funny it is almost a let down because of the first chapter. Whenever I need a laugh I go back and read that first chapter and it has not failed me yet.

not bad!
Screwballs is about a group of high school boys who have a bet on who can see Purity Busch's breast first. The humor is juvenile, but if you like that sort of thing this movie's for you.

THE BOOK EQUIVALENT OF THE MOVIE MAJOR LEAGUE ONLY FUNNIER.
IF YOU ARE IN THE MOOD FOR A STORY OF UTTER HILARITY AND LAUGH OUT LOUD HUMOR-THEN SCREWBALLS IS THE ONE FOR YOU. IT IS THE TALE OF A LAST PLACE BASEBALL TEAM REVITALIZED BY AN NO NONESENSE MANAGER AND AN ECLECTIC GROUP OF MISFITS. IT FOLLOWS THEM THRU A SEASON THAT THEY AND YOU THE READER WILL NEVER FORGET. I HIGHLY RECOMEND ALL MR. CRONLEY'S NOVELS BUT THIS IS HIS ABSOLUTE FUNNIEST.

Do not confuse with the movie
Screwballs is too funny for words. But it is not the movie about endless [breasts].

FEEL THE FEVER!
Saturday Night Fever is an enjoyable dramatization of tough Italian-American New York life in the late 1970s. The film fascinates me because their rough urban working class lifestyle, and the exhilarating night club adventures, is another world to me.

SNF is incredible during the first 30 minutes, when it's a dramatization of Nik Cohn's article, "Tribal Rites Of A New Saturday Night". Tony Manero finishes a dull week of minimum wage work, comes home, dons polyester and prepares for the "Saturday Night Fever". His trashy friends pick him up and they head to the 2001 Odyssey Disco. The disco scene is sexy, seedy, and inclusive to all. The Bee Gee's ultimate masterpiece, "Night Fever", sums it all up in an infectious and catchy groove.

The music, especially tunes by the Bee Gees and The Trammps, is absolutely sensational; slick, fun, funky, melodic, and emotional. You can dance to them or just listen; they provide a perfect soundtrack for the drama. As most critics have noted, John Travolta's complex and ultra-cool performance is the highlight of the film. Travolta's dancing is really something else. Travolta's solo, danced to "You Should Be Dancing", is killer. Travolta is a better dancer than Michael Jackson could ever be. Travolta moves suavely with his masculinity intact. Women love him, and all men want to be able to be able to dance that well.

Alas Saturday Night Fever falters when it digresses into melodrama. The character of Stephanie MacDonald hurts the film. Although the audience can sympathize with her, she just isn't as interesting or charismatic as the other characters are. Her scenes drag the film into soap opera. The death of Bobby C., although a dramatic motivation for Tony to ditch his punk friends and their dead-end lifestyle, is a real downer and seems like a climax from an after-school TV special. Double J's rape of Annette seems out of character and contrived. Besides, why would Bobby C. and Tony let it happen? Every movie needs dramatic climaxes to propel the action and resolve the characters' dilemmas, and sometimes they have to be sad, but I would have liked something less manufactured and more thoughtful.

After re-watching the film recently, I realized the film failed to live up to it's potential. The screenwriter could have delved deeper into the characters' blue-collar roots. Tony's family, his pathetic and cruel father, and his superstitious and ignorant mother, could have been fleshed out more. It's hard to believe people as intelligent and likable as Tony and his brother Frank have such difficult and frustrating parents. It would have been interesting to have seen parallels between Tony and his father.

Another weakness is Badham's directing. His jerky style suits this particular film but the scene where Tony and his friends drive their car into the Puerto-Ricans' hangout is horribly shot, even for him. Slow motion is pretty lame.

Overall Saturday Night Fever is a good movie but not the masterpiece it could have been.

Catch The Fever
Saturday Night Fever was not only the film that made John Travolta a superstar, but also it defined the style of a generation. Disco started to infiltrate the music scene as early as 1974 (with hits like "Rock Your Baby" by George McRae). Discos were wildly popular in New York City by 1976 and they provided an outlet for the youth of the city to escape reality and dance away the night amid drinks, drugs and sex. Inspired by an article in the New Yorker magazine that described the scene, producer Robert Stigwood wanted to capture it in a movie. He realized the music is what drove the discos and he recruited his biggest act, The Bee Gees to record songs for the film. This proved ingenious as the soundtrack and the movie are inseparable. Although the band does not physically appear in the film, they are the co-stars of the film with Mr. Travolta. The film and soundtrack became huge hits in late 1977 and into 1978 and disco moved from the urban cities to the heartland of America. The film itself seems a bit dated, but it is saved from being a complete period piece by Mr. Travolta's superb acting. He completely embodies the character of Brooklynite Tony Manero who works in a paint store during the week and lives to dance at the local disco on the weekends. At work and at home, he's a nobody, but at the disco, he is the king. The dancing scenes are classics and often imitated, but Mr. Travolta is the real deal on the dance floor. Mr. Travolta earned the first of his two Best Actor Academy Award nominations for the film and it was richly deserved. The soundtrack went on to spend 24 weeks at number one, spawn 4 number one singles and for a time was the biggest selling album in music history.

The Disco Era Classic Film
In 1977 not everybody knew what the innovative disco music was, and to what extent night clubing was going on. This film depicts John Travolta as Brookyn's Tony Manero, hero to the dance floor. His dead end job at a paint store makes him live for The Saturday Night disco scene. Travolta meets Karen Gorney and enters a dance contest with her but she refuses his sexuall advances. Gorney sees herself going to Manhattan to move on with her life. Travolta sees her as a snob. One local girl played by Donna Pescow likes Travolta but is pushed away by him for Gorneys character since she's a better dancer and Pescow is considered boring. What underlies is Trvoltas often at odds relationship with his family. Racial gang wars and a friend you can't help but wonder about his sexuality. Not only did this movie imitate the era, it influenced the next seven years with it's record selling soundtrack and the great timing in which some of the best nightclubs in America remained open. The movies message is vague but lets you fill in the blanks as Travoltas (Manero) becomes fed up with his existing lifestyle. Moviegoers became so enthralled with it, it would continue into the mid 80's. A PG version was recut to feature the dancing and less social conciousness with virtually no explicit language. This movie had one of the biggest impacts of late 70's films!

Helpful, Easy to Carry; Phonetics could be better
This is a small book with contextual topics that are easy to find in the table of contents. Some basic grammar rules are included and can help someone use past, present, future, ability, and the classifiers if they want to learn the basics of using them. It can be carried in your pocket, and I think that is the best asset. It's a small book you can take anywhere. The phonetical pronunciation was incorrect in one area. The beginning consonant "G"is pronounced more as a hard "g" sound, but it is listed in the book at a "k." This caused miscommunication for it changes the entire word and meaning. The beauty salon context, i.e., "getting a haircut" is a section that is not in this book but could be very useful. This book is very affordable and helpful...just keep in mind some of the phonetic transcriptions, which already difficult in Thai to English, could have been more accurate.

Very useful but not (yet) perfect
I have just started using it and it has a lot of very useful day-to-day phrases. I don't like the size of the Thai script. It is very difficult to read and one nearly needs a magnifying glass to be sure. I have learnt to read and write Thai by learning it through German transliteration (which is much more accurate than English because German has many more sounds which are closer to Thai) and would like to use the phrasebook without Cummings' phonetics. Enlarge the Thai script and the tone marks, clear up the mistakes and it will remain the best phrasebook currently available.

HELPFULL
This phrase-book was very helpful in my last travel to thailand. I kept it always in my pocket and thanks to the thai writings, you can just point the word and the friendly locals teach you how to pronunciate it properly. I gave this book MANY uses, even in the most unexpected situations. USEFUL !

Good...but not Great
This book has ok for anyone that has the time and patience to read over 1,600 pages of text. I too agree with an earlier review that the book does contain too much "fluff" and does not get to the point of the pertinent material in a concise mannor. The small text is very hard to read and the glare from the glossy paper used to print this book make the book hard to read for more than an hour at a time.

If you have already read the Mastering Windows Server 2000 by Manasi, don't waste your money on this book. About 90% of this book is just a reprint of the material in the previous book. Manasi would have done better in writing a book that was geared toward just the material that was new to Windows Server 2003 and saving about 1,000 pages in the process.

My recommendation would be to find one of the other book that are available for Windows Server 2003 that are more "to-the-point" and specific to the subject matter of Microsoft's new Server 2003 release.

Hail to the ranking member of the tech writing world!!
Once again, I am extremely pleased with this book. This is an in-the-trenches type book that will help you get your job done. It is not meant to be a general overview of Windows 2003. It is not meant to only uncover the changes that have been made in 2003. What the heck kind of book would it be if it only had all of the new features that 2003 offered. Minasi could put that in a stinkin magazine article if he wanted to. For all you people out there that want a read that just outlines the new features of 2003, then download a blasted white paper from Microsoft. I don't agree one single bit with any of you folks who cry about seeing the same matierial in the 2003 book as in the 2000 books. If the feature is implemented and managed the same way in both 2000 and 2003, what in the heck does the wording need to be changed for. The book is called Mastering Windows Server 2003 not Mastering What's New In Server 2003. The book has to cover the full spectrum people! And it does just that, magnificently. You folks that gave this books such a low mark (1 star) and wrote the most unprofessional and incorrect comments are probably the very ones that live at his web the he provides us for !!!FREE!!!,by the way, trying to fix your Active Directories that you let the "Wizard" create for you, or pulling your hair out trying to come up with a solution for all the infighting and political turmoil that exists in your organization because this group of admins does'nt want that group of admins to get the Enterprise Admin privelages. The answers to these and many, many more issues are brilliantly covered in this book. In a nutshell, you will be a better Windows administrator after reading this book..period. You will read about things that you will not find anywhere else...promise! Minasi crosses bridges in this book that most people don't. Everything that he writes about is thoroughly tested by him or his co-authors before they even think about putting it to paper. I truly beleive, that the "Mastering" series of books have done more to make me a better administrator/designer ( and I am really good!), than any other book or class that i have ever read or taken, hands down!! And if you don't have the 2003 book in your arsenal, you are going to spend a lot of time searching white papers, forums, and many other books for information that you could have found right here in this book. I'd rather spend my time being productive instead of searching all over the place for answers to something. It's your choice!

Thank You, Mark Minasi!!!
This book is just amazing! As someone who is fairly new to administering Windows 2003 (um, and Windows 2000 and Active Directory), it has proved to be a GODSEND! This is THE book that I grab everytime I need to learn how to set something up. Mark has this incredible ability to feel like he is right in the room with me, looking over my shoulder. His explanations are great. And, I for one, am glad that I get LOTS of pages for my money. I didn't know the first thing about DNS, Active Directory or Windows 2000/2003 Server when I picked up this book and now my test domains are simply humming along. I picked this book up in a bookstore after reading bits and pieces at the bookshelf. I came out to the Amazon site to get the ISBN number for a colleague when I read some of the reviews. You guys are crazy. I've read a ton of technical books and none of them come close to this one, in terms of what you get for the money. And why on earth would you think that you should be able to print from the CD? What's the copyright good for, if I could print a copy out for all of my friends. I'm sure it took a lot of effort to write this book and I, for one, am willing to pay for it. I'm sold. Thanks Mark. You made my life much easier.

Amusing
City couple move to the country. The husband intends to be a novelist. The wife reluctantly goes along with the move. Largely it's a typical comic adversity story but with some of the mishaps a little more outrageous than "The Egg and I." It doesn't really start to rise (to my warped perspective) above say "Green Acres" until the husband starts going through some changes. For example he tries to improve his mail delivery service by attempting to murder the mailman in the belief that any replacement would have to be an improvement. In summary, I didn't find it hysterical or hilarious. I found it amusing. Amusing enough that I expect to read another Jay Cronley book in the not too distant future.

Funny Farm
Funny Farm By: Jay Cronley

This is a great book. At first I thought it was going to be boring. After reading the first 3 or 4 pages I found myself not being able to put it down. I have never read a book that made me laugh before. This book is really funny. I would find myself laughing at the words on the page and people would be starring at me.
This book is mainly about a couple that moves to the country. It talks about the problems they come across while trying to get settled in their new home. I would recommend this book to anyone. I think that if you like a book that has a good plot and makes you laugh that you would love this book.
The only negative thing I would say about this book would be that there is a lot of cursing. Some people don't mind cursing but if you do then this might not be the book for you. Other than that I think this is a terrific book and you should read it. At least give it a chance before you judge it! Who knows you just might like it!

Apologia for misintrepreted nonsense
Books crowing the 'successes' of Nostradamus' so-called predictions are invariably filled with alteration, misinterpretation, and wishful thinking--sort of like reading a fortune cookie or horoscope and retrofitting its message into ones' personal life. It's easy to take mysterious-sounding and confusingly-worded predictions and shoehorn them into some sort of future event. Liberal "reading" of the predictions (i.e. turning the syllables "pau-nay-oloron" into "Napoleon") can then make them sound incredibly accurate. Many poor researchers and Nostradamus apologists have done just this in feeble attempts to convince themselves and the world of the "accuracy" achieved by this legendary figure.

Nostradamus was not a seer, his predictions were not accurate, and only by the most amazing twists of logic and liberal "interpretation" of the quatrains can anyone suggest otherwise. Save your money, buy James Randi's _The Mask of Nostradamus_ instead, and learn something.

911
the passage entitled "warplanes over the americas" is just too ironic to be ironic.. it DIRECTLY relates to 911... you must get this book.. its sooo interesting

A great book for predictions
I saw a TV show about 6 months ago on Nostradamus and was very interested in the whole idea that someone who lived so long ago could predict things so far into the future. This book brings to life his predictions and I strongly recommend it if you like a book thats extremely interesting and a little frightening. You can interpret how you like his "fulfilled" predictions, but whether you believe them or not, it is a book well worth reading.
