superb
This wonderful little book makes me wonder why white male preachers continue to be so breath-takingly dull. As a white woman, I side completely with the courageous, dynamic presentations of Black preachers in all their varieties of discourse. Highly recommended.

Perfectly lovely
This is one of my favourite Hardy novels. As some others have noted, it's not one of the "big 5" but certainly worth reading. Hardy's descriptions of the woodlands are beautiful, and I found the ending to be one of his most unpredictable. I wouldn't recommend reading it if you are feeling down, as the ending is sooooo wonderfully tragic (hehe), or if you're not a fan of Hardy's prose style, but otherwise it's a wonderful read. Very personal as well. I got the feeling it was written just for me :)

A Beautiful Novel of Love and Social Class
This novel has received less attention in the U.S. than some of Hardy's other works, such an The Mayor Of Casterbridge, w ith its theme of the individual in tragic conflict with fate. The Woodlanders dwells on the needless sufferings and unhappiness brought on by class privelege. This is a subject always sure to raise suspicions of membership in the Khmer Rouge or the North Korean Secret Police here in the holyland of capitalism. But it is a beautiful work of art. Henry James and Jacques Barzun sneered at it because of its attacks on the upper classes. But that is a mark in its favor. Anything opposed by those two must be on the side of progress and human emancipation.

A lesser known gem of English literature
It's easy to see how Thomas Hardy became a wonderful poet after his long career of writing novels, given the meaty prose and superb scenery he conjured in "The Woodlanders." Tales of matrimonial and unrequited love compete for space amongst the bounty of Hardy's described woods, heaths and vales. "Woodlanders" offers some of the most complex and well-developed characters of Hardy's novelistic pantheon. Yet such stories of amor et fides, honor and self-sacrifice quickly become a backdrop when Hardy reaches for the woods of his mind.

Interesting Reading...
I am a huge Joan Crawford fan who is always looking for a great biography to read on her. Joan Crawford: A Biography By Bob Thomas is good and well written. it covers the basics & lets you in on the private life of Joan Crawford. But my only complaint was that it didn't spend enough time giving you the intimate details on what it was like for Joan to make cetain movies & her relationship w/ her co-stars. things any classic movie buff/fan wants to hear. it fills in the blanks & closes some gaps but i didn't feel like i was there or that i learned something new. i'm still looking for the difinative bio on Joan Crawford...any suggestions?

Best Joan biography
My favorite will always be Christina's book "Mommie Dearest", but this book gave a much more detailed background of Joan's childhood and early years in Hollywood, as well as her last years. I am surprised that someone so famous would have nothing to do but sit in her apartment all day and answer letters. You'd think someone like that would have so many friends and always have something planned every night.

I don't think someone that famous- and this refers to Joan in the 1950s and 60s- had to worry about being a "has-been". She already had an Oscar and everyone knew her name. She will ALWAYS be famous. A good comparison would probably be John Travolta. He has made some great classics ("Grease"), but his last couple of movies have been bombs. So what. He'll always be around.

I think Joan was a great friend to her peers, there's no doubt. Her treatment towards her children was horrific. This was no secret in Hollywood, either. Christina was no crybaby who wrote her book because she was disinherited. If someone brought it up to Joan to lighten up, they were asked to leave the house or told to mind their own business. No wonder Christopher kept running away!! And where's the logic in punishment with physcial harm because he tried to run away? That would just make him want to leave MORE.

I definitely recommend this, it's the best Joan biography to date.

best bio of joan crawford ever published
I have been reading hollywood biographies for about 30 years, almost exclusively, and Joan is one of my favorites. This bio is the best I've ever read about her.

Great introduction
This is a wonderful introduction to the legend of Arthur. The story is told in a nice, straightforward way that doesn't interfere with the wonderful drawings. There's enough detail in the drawings to entertain an older artist, but not so much that a younger person will get frustrated trying to color.

Insight on one of T.E.L's greatest critics
This is a nice book. Describes how stuborne T.E.L's friends were when any critic wanted to publish anything that contradicted their belifes. Mostly just a combination of the letters Aldington and others wrote while he was trying to publish his book on T.E.L.

Alot covered, none very well
I have to agree with previous reviewers, this book DOES cover quite a bit. From DHTML to IIS Applications, but it has to be considered a beginner to intermediate book on Web programming in VB6. Even though the long-term viability of Web Classes is under question, the utter lack of any quality material on the ONE thing Microsoft touts as "Web" enabled in VB6 is extremely disappointing for a book so expensive. You can debug problems with your objects in VB6 with WebClasses that you can't perform with an ASP page and a compiled dll. Do they even mention this? No.

For the interested, you can find most of the material discussed in this book by simply looking on MSDN or other web sites for articles on the subjects you're interested in. With multiple authors, that's all you will get out of this book, anyway.

Book was very useful to me professionally. But not perfect.
I rated this 5 stars because it has the most useful writeup on writing Server Components in VB for use with ASP - chapters 9-11. I wanted to do this and had trouble getting working samples and explanations. I feel that industrial strength ASP is very ugly and unweildy if you don't encapsulate the code into components. MSDN has lots of reference material about this but little, if any, useful "how to" stuff that i could find.

This book showed me how to do exactly what i wanted to do.

Other than that, it is a good introduction into a good number of web concepts, old and new. The first 3 chapters were a good overview of Microsoft web concepts and techniques. The writeup on web classes, if you like them, is good. I really liked the CGI case study including how to implement standard input/output via the win32 API.

The relatively free use of various win32 API functions in VB help overcome a general fear of mixing VB and CC++ functionality.

The book was a bit large but was well organized. In general it gave me a much higher opinion of Wrox books.

Covers all aspects of VB6 Web Programming!!!
Having purchased many other WROX books, I was eagerly awaiting this one for a current project. When it arrived I read through it like a mad man. Soaking up everything I possibly could. The examples are very clear and there are plenty of them! It covers everything from IIS, ASP and ADO to RDS, SQL, DHTML, MTS and WebClasses. All in one book! Plenty of examples with detailed descriptions and tables explaining the various methods for each function. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about using VB6 for web development.
