Exciting!
Valley of Death is one of the sexiest and most exciting books I have ever read! The love scenes sizzle and the action beats the Lethal Weapon movies! The characters are beleivable and so real. I'd like to meet Jack Riley in person to see if he's really that good in the sack!

Valley of Death: An Adventure Story to Remember
Craig's book pulls you into the world of Jack Riley and Moria Clark, full of fast-paced adventure and romance. Valley of Death was a nonstop thrill ride that kept me intrigued with each new twist and turn. Ceaselessly exciting, Craig's novel keeps you turning pages until the finish.

Lethal Weapon meets Romancing the Stone
Valley of death was an awesomely paced page turner that I couldn't put down! It has the action and humor of the Lethal Weapon Movies and the romance of Romancing the Stone! Form Chicago to the Arctic, it never stops and never lets up! if you buy no other book this year, buy Valley of Death!

Author: Bill Craig
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Sexier than ever!
Mayan Gold is Bill Craig's sexiest book yet! The love scenes are so steamy I needed a cold shower after reading them! The action is also well written and the characters intriguing. I can't wait to see what happens to Jack and Moria and Ken and Julie in his next book! Please tell me he's going to write a third one?

An escape to adventure!
Mayan Gold is a great follow up to Bill Craig's fisrt Novel Valley of Death. It expands on the characters of Jack Riley, Moria Clark and Ken Alston and introduces a new continuing character In Dr. Julie Carr. The action is intense and the pace is incredible. It's a great way to escape into an well written and exotic adventure for a few hours to get away from theworries and cares of the world we live in. The Jack Riley novels give us black and white characters where the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. It's almost a return to a simpler and more well-ordered world. The characters are realistic and fun, the plost is fast paced and exciting. Mayan Gold is a fantastic read and a novel you won't put down until you finish it!

Third Time is a Charm!
The third outing of Chicago Police Detective Jack RIley is the best yet! Dead Run is not only exciting, but has the full characterization that readers have come to expect from this author. Riley finally has a final confrontation with nemesis Miles Brannigan that brings to mind the best of the old western movies! During the race to get Andreya Petrovitch back to Chicago to testify against Russian Mob Boss Ivan Rudinov, Riley and his partner Alston must deal with a number of obsticales as Moria Clark does an expose of the growing influence of the Russian Mob in the United States. Finally, it all comes together on the steps of the Federal Courthouse in Chicago, where nothing is as it appears! This book is a must buy for anyone who enjoyed the first two books of the series, Valley of Death and Mayan Gold. I can't wait to see the fourth installment, Pirate's Blood!

Fly Patterns of Northern New Mexico
Published in Spiral-bound by University of New Mexico Press (04 May, 2000)

Lives up to its billing
If you live in New Mexico or southern Colorado and fish or tie flies you will like this book. It catalogs unusal regional fly patterns and the waters to fish them. I, of course, haven't tied or fished all of the patterns in the book but its an enjoyable read. Because these flies are not going to be found in even some of the best fly shops in the region the recipes and tying instructions are worth the price. The instructions also include a variety of techniques that are not as well described in other fly tying manuals. The only negative I can think of is the lack of color pictures, but I have a good enough imagination not to need them. Besides I'm a sucker for books from the University of New Mexico Press.

Hunting Hard for Whitetails (Whitetail Secrets Series Number 11)
Published in Hardcover by Buckingham Mint (2000)
Authors: Bill Winke and Craig Boddington
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

"Hunting Hard for Whitetails" is a MUST read
If you are a serious whitetail bowhunter, you really owe it to yourself to check out Bill Winke's "Hunting Hard for Whitetails". Although it is a relatively "thin" publication, it is heavy on the meat of advanced bowhunting tactics and skips the usual fluff in these type of books.

The book details strategies that have proven successful for Winke over the years, and shows how to apply it to your area. This isn't the same tired, old rehashed information. Instead, Winke presents new insights that are sure to boost your success.

Few people are more qualified to write a book on bowhunting trophy whitetails than Winke. If you follow the outdoors magazines even casually, you are no doubt familiar with Winke's byline.

The book is easy to read, and is sprinkled with high quality photography. A word of caution however: save yourself some trouble and don't lend this book to your friends. Have them buy their own copy or you may never see your's again!

Baseball, education and fun all in one book!

Naked Child: Growing Up Without Shame
Published in Hardcover by Elysium Growth Press (1986)
Authors: Dennis Craig Smith, William Sparks, Bill Sparks, and Iris Bancroft
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

A very thorough and valuable book for parents, families...
The Naked Child: Growing Up Without Shame is a wonderful reference for nudist families and parents, and those who are interested in the subjects of nudity and its effects on children's development. The authors present a lot of academic research study summaries to support their conclusions, and also include a number of anecdotal interviews. I feel that, at times, the anecdotal material is kind of contrived, but, overall, it gives the conclusions drawn (namely, that children's exposure to social nudity is not only not harmful, but is generally beneficial) a more "personal" ring to them. I've owned this book for many years, and I still frequently use it when compiling research on the topic myself.

Using Intranetware
Published in Paperback by Que (1997)
Authors: Craig Zacker, Mickey Applebaum, Suzanne Miles, Jill McKee, Roger Kresge, and Bill Lawrence
Amazon base price: $49.99
Average review score:

The best single volume treatment of Intranetware I've seen.
A concise guide to Intranetware. An especially good explanation of the interface between NDS and the file system; I finally understand what's going on. Easily as much information as the "Novell's Guide to..." series without all the fluff. It lacks the drills and tests of other books, but if you want to get a feel for why things work the way they do this is the place to look. I've read the manuals, course materials, and dynatext. This book doesn't offer a new look at Intranetware; it just explains it better.

Professional Active Server Pages 3.0

Average review score:

Valuable technical reference, but too BLOATED.
I'll agree with the many other reviews that rate this book as an extremely knowledgeable reference on ASP, perhaps the definitive reference.

However, there are several points that make this book somewhat unappealing from a practical perspective.

First, note that it was written by 15 different authors. This incorporates many different writing styles, making it unwieldy. The previous edition was written by 8 people. Do not attempt to use either book as a cover-to-cover tutorial.

Second, the code examples are written almost exclusively in VBScript, although the book acknowledges that Javascript (also known as JScript) would work just as effectively. From a real-world perspective, I have found that many ASP programmers prefer to use Javascript for both server-side and client-side development.

The use of 2 scripting languages in one application is simply impractical. VBScript persists mainly because it is a Microsoft invention, as is ASP itself. However, Javascript (or ECMA Script) has become the industry-standard scripting language for web-based applications.

Another issue with the code examples is that they are not line-numbered. For short examples, this is not an issue. But for larger code modules (as one would encounter in the real world), line-numbering is considered part of best practices in explaining and debugging code before it is deployed.

For readers with any ASP background, this book would be a useful desktop reference. Carrying it around in your briefcase may cause lower back strain.

For inter./adv. web developers using Microsoft
Professional Active Server Pages 3.0, by Alex Homer, is
a book on developing web applications using Active
Server Pages 3.0. This book goes in depth into
developing web applications with discussions and
examples on advanced topics such as, CDO/Microsoft
Exchange Server, ADO/Microsoft SQL Server, and
ADSI/Active Directory. Homer presents the reader with a
wealth of information on advanced enterprise level
topics based on Microsoft technologies. This book is
excellent for intermediate/advanced users who wish to
learn about Active Server Pages using Microsoft
technologies, however due to the fact Homer does not
goes in depth with fundamentals of programming Visual
Basic Script, this book should not be recommended to
novice developers.

Throughout the book, Homer discusses the importance of
COM/COM+ and what that technology can do for your web
application. He writes examples of a COM+ component in
Visual Basic and shows the user how to register/load
the component into memory along with utilizing the
functionality of them in an Active Server Page. Homer
further explores the features of Windows 2000 by
introducing the features of Active Directory and
explaining/demonstrating how ADSI can connect an Active
Server Page to the Active Directory. The book goes into
further detail on enterprise level topics by discussing
how CDO interfaces with Microsoft Exchange Server.
Using CDO, a developer can access all of users Exchange
account information including mail, contacts, calendar,
etc. The book ends with performance and security issues
for web applications running on a Windows 2000 Server
and how an administrator should configure a Windows
2000 Server for maximum performance and security.

The software/technologies the book uses are based on
products/technologies developed by Microsoft. Since
Active Server Pages is a Microsoft technology, it would
be reasonable to use only Microsoft
products/technologies. However, in the real world, many
businesses have heterogeneous environments with Oracle
database servers and JavaScript web developers. The
fact that this book only exposes the reader to vendor-
specific technologies could be a down fall, however
creates a centralized focus for the reader.

This book covers a wide spectrum of advanced knowledge
with Active Server Pages, however is completely based
around Microsoft technologies. Several other authors
composed this book, which helps the reader get a
dynamic flavor of knowledge from chapter to chapter as
one can see. Any intermediate/advanced web developer,
interested in enterprise web application development,
should purchase a copy of this book for reference
purposes.

A must-read for enterprise web developers
Being an enterprise web developer, I found this book to be the absolute best in its field. It covers a very wide spectrum of fields any web developer working with Microsoft web technology should know, including ADO, ADSI, ASP, CDO, COM+, error handling, MSMQ, Windows DNA, XML, and a whole lot more (note that this book is primarily oriented at web developers who's target platform is Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0, but I also found it to be extremely useful for use on Windows NT 4.0 and IIS 4.0, since the authors clearly indicate features that are new to Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0). The writing style is absolutely excellent and gives clear tips on code optimization and performance. I have read literally dozens of different books on these subjects, and none has come close to this one. Although this book is not for beginners, it is, in my opinion, good for anyone who wants to advance their career on the web or become an web developer. This is definitely a book you will want to read from cover to cover, and use as a reference. At just about any price, it's a steal.
