An invaluable reference on this collecting topic...
This is a fabulous book! For those of us who revel in collecting ephemera (printed paper of all sorts), this book provides a feast of information and visual overviews. The author covers the following subjects (among others): collecting ephemera; sources and values; conservation and display; the various printing processes; various categories (such as tradecards, letterheads, handbills, poster stamps, playing card stationery, book labels, valentines, and rewards of merit); a variety of themes (such as travel, funeralia, crime and punishment, rural life, cigar packaging, education, and entertainment); and includes a wonderful glossary, reference of papers and watermarks, and a good bibliography.

All in all a must-have for the serious collector of ephemera (you know who you are!), and well worth the price to special order. Don't hestitate, buy it!

A master craftsman.
A wonderful book with complete instructions for making collector-grade, period furniture. However, it's not for inexperienced woodworkers or those without good power tools. A lathe is essential for his beautiful turnings. The highly skilled author is a retired structural engineer and it shows in his meticulously crafted works.

Charles Tuthill: An American Artisan-Entrepreneur
An enthralling chronical of the career of a remarkable man, Charles Tuthill, founder of Tuthill Cut Glass of Middletown, New York, and his family. Beginning as an apprentice at T. G. Hawkes & Company in 1887, Tuthill went on to become both a master glass cutter and a master engraver. He rose to foreman at Hawkes by the time he was 24 years old, resigning in 1895 to set up his own glass-cutting shop in his father's carraige house in Corning. From there he moved to Middletown where he was joined in the business by his sister-in-law, who served as general manager, and his brother. Well known for its original designs combining engraved fruits and flowers with geometric cutting, the Company prospered and, in 1915, was awarded a gold medal for its display at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

Written in the you-are-there style of the "new journalism," the book is a lively read. Drawing heavily on interviews with Tuthill family members, it fills a large gap in our knowledge of the cut glass industry. Cut glass collectors will recognize the names of the players in this unique American success story and get to know them better through the many anecdotes offered by author Maurice Crofford. The book should appeal also to those interested in American business history, in general, and the unique period around the turn of the 20th century when brilliant cut glass decorated the tables of the rich and famous. It would make an excellent reading assignment for upstate New York high school students.

Basic Design: The Dynamics of Visual Form (Design Handbooks)

design primer
I have been looking for an updated replacement for this out of print book for a long time. The table of contents provides concrete topics that are not-redundant and importantly allow us to delve into 3 dimensions at the same time we are learning fundamental principles of 2-dimensional graphic design. It is a rare book that starts to fill the gap between a study of graphic design and a study of architectural design. The topics are general enough to apply to both 2-D and 3-D design; such as, primary elements, spatial forces, and visual kinetics. Architectural design training could be well supplemented by de Sausmerez's treatment of "the two-dimensional field and the space frame", "analytical drawing", and "subjective color". It's a great outline for a design study that could be augmented for architects by contributions from authors Francis Ching, Wucius Wong, and Le Corbusier's Towards a New Architecture.

Clay : Hand Building
The title is more precise than one would hope. The text delivers not a guide nor a how-to book, but rather a simple definition. Basic yet adequate black & white photo illustrations provide no more than a cursury surfing of the term hand building. Although useful to define the technique from throwing on a wheel, this book is useless if one is searching for an in depth study of proper hand building technique.

Excellent inspiration!
Much more than a basic overview! Has a lot of intriguing designs that, unlike more advanced books, are totally reproducable for the beginning to intermediate artist. Has pinch pots, pinch sculpture, coil pots, coil sculpture, slab pots & sculpture and a section on clay surface embellishment - the decorative textural treatment of clay. Abstract works, also.
