Excellent book for children of any age
I received this book over 25 years ago from my uncle/godfather before I could even read. I remember being so mesmerized by the beautiful illustrations, I would make someone read it to me every night just so I could look at the pictures! It's definitely worth an out-of-print search! I got hold of another copy a few years ago which I intend to pass on to my recently-born niece!

should be reprinted!
I have a copy of this book from years ago when I was a child. I was sad to see that it is out of print, and feel sorry for the children who won't have the opportunity to experience it. I remember many a day of reading and rereading this wonderful book.

Deserves to be Reprinted!
Adventure, Poetry, Fantastically Colorful and Detailed Artwork combine in this short classic of children's literature.

It's worth an out of print search.

Easy of Play is Paramount!
And on that note, XID Creative shines with its release of "Providence: Main Rule Book." The Creative System does all it says and more.

- The Creative Engine is a clean and clear skills-based system providing both flexability in use and character development in play.

- System resolution utilizes target number (TN) resolution, providing as many or as few modifiers as the troupe feels comfortable with.

- Magic and powers system that, while initially difficult to grasp, is quite fluid once understood.

- The Providence world is presented in enough detail to provide a base level of play, very sufficient to get a grasp on.

Overall, an excellent game!

Baker's Dictionary of Music
Published in Library Binding by Gale Group (1997)
Authors: Nicolas Slonimsky and Richard Kassel
Amazon base price: $162.50
Average review score:

Worth every penny and then more......
There is no other dictionary of music equal to this one in range, depth, style, and presentation. It presumes music as a whole, not only in its classical cloak. It is a pleasure to read. Individual entries are clear and focused, without the infuriating omissions one has found in various editions of the Oxford or Harvard. Specific topics which in the editors' opinions require greater analysis are given their due in thoroughly inteligent boxed articles, with different background color. To give an idea of the work's scope, here are some samples of regular entries: etiology, major-minor syndrome, Arab music, "A Bicycle Built for Two", Marni Nixon, Picardy third, schnarre, kolo, "Red" Foley, Fluxus, Eduard Steuermann, mescolanza, etc. Of course, all the usually expected items are present, not in dry lexicographic prose but vibrantly and wittily written. Boxed articles include such topics as Music Therapy, Arnold Schoenberg, socialist realism, interval, longevity, Edward MacDowell, Arturo Toscanini, rock, Henry Cowell, César Franck, graphic notation, jazz, etc. The entry on Maria Callas ends by quoting a commentator who said: "If an orgasm could sing, it would sound like Maria Callas." Slonimsky concludes "Pleanostically speaking, she was an incarnation of carnality." The book is printed on sturdy, beautiful paper, standard type, and has numerous photographs throughout, including one of Carmen Miranda. The binding is meant to last and be passed on.

This is a work to cherish. I cannot imagine a music lover who would not treasure it. This edition was edited after Slonimsky's death. There may not be another version coming. I encourage anyone with a serious interest in Music to get it before it goes out of print. Music is here, presented with depth and elegance, in all her infinite variety.

Why We Wrote This Book
My wife and I wrote this book for three reasons: (1) To provide you with information about the process of grief, knowing that if you understand what's happening you'll be less fearful and better able to work through your grief; (2) To provide you with support as you go through the grief process, assuring you it's OK to grieve, it's OK to take your time (it takes as long as it takes), and assuring you that what you're going through is probably perfectly normal for someone who's grieving; (3) To provide a catalyst for your growth, because although it's horribly painful, you can grow through this process and, even if you don't believe it now, you do have a future.

This isn't pretentious. It's easy to read and a convenient book to mark up. You don't have to digest it all in one gulp! At first, when your grief is raw, you may only be able to deal with the quotes in the margins, but the time will come, down the road, when you are ready to come back and read more.

We're grateful that this book has helped many people through their grief, and we hope it can help you. Grief is hard, painful work! Your whole world has turned upside down. Nothing makes sense any more. You feel alone and confused. You think your feelings and emotions are out of control. You wonder at times if you are losing your mind. This book is for you!

The Concise Baker's
For those of us who can't afford the complete Baker'sBiographical Dictionary of Musicians, the Concise version is still agreat buy We have owned the 8th ed. for some years and use it very frequently. This dictionary has good clear information on not just the well known composers and performers, but many minor composers and performers as well. Like the complete ed., this dictionary includes jazz musicians. One of the best features of this book is that it not only has the biographical article, but has the composer's works divided up into the various types of composition, such as piano music, giving both titles and dates of compositon. A great reference tool, particularly for anyone wanting to find more pieces by a favorite composer, or a date for a piece already known. .

Some Things Change Slowly
In 1994 my wife and I made our first trip to Italy, and in preparation for that trip I made heavy use of "The Charming, Small Hotel Guide to Italy." Upon our return, I later came across the first edition of their guide to "Tuscany and Umbria" and another for "Venice and the Veneto."

I swear by these guides-- but I have to complain a little about the latest edition. First, it has changed very little from the prior edition-- there are only a handful of new entries. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, in the interim, many of the properties listed have acquired e-mail accounts and developed websites. The internet era has made it much easier to check on room availability, current pricing, etc., but very few email addresses or URLs are listed. That complaint aside, this is a good, useful book, one I would use to plan our next trip to Tuscany-- if we couldn't get a room at "our place."

Great
We used this to plan our lodging in Tuscany, and we stayed in some wonderful places. I would highly recommend it for those interested in staying in smaller hotels with lots of charm.

Wonderful hotels for a great travel experience
We are the authors of Eating & Drinking in Italy and have used this guide for many years. If you want to have a memorable trip to Italy, stay in the small hotels listed in this helpful guide.
