Most outstanding
This man is a major role model. Track this book down! He personally says this is his best book!

Here's a few excerpts from essays in the book.

From "Spice of Life":

"Danger - not variety - is the spice of life. ... "Fear" and "terror" are words too oftern used in the Age of the Common Man. [Referred to elsewhere as the "Age of the Wimp".] When I was a lad they were not admissible. Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan, for example, said, "I do not know what you mean by 'fear'. I do not want to die, if that is what you mean, but you speak as if there were something more to it than that." Fear nullifies a man's ability to cope with the danger which gives rise to the fear is an unacceptable emotion."

From his his trip down the lawless and outlawful "Rio Balsas" in Mexico:

"It is my belief that people are afraid of the unknown essentially because they are afraid of freedom. Freedom is scary. While the idea of living without politically imposed limits is glorious to a few, it is terrifying to the many. This is a function of one's ability to cope. Those who feel, rightly or wrongly, that they can cope with whatever happens are enormously outnumbered by those who do not."

From "Nocturne", when Cooper was a security consultant for a coffee plantation owner whose staff was randomly bing killed by communist agents with social change in mind. His client said to him,

"In the twentieth century we have had three classes of wars, all total. First we had the static war of great empires, an essentially defensive war ruled by the technology of the time. This was World War I.

"Then we had the mobile war of national ideologies, in which you served. Its fluidity was likewise dictated by the march of technology. This was World War II.

"And now we have World War III, the war of international ideologies. It's all one war, whether fought in Korea, of Viet Nam, or along the Sino-Indian frontier, of in the streets and on the campuses of your country, or here on my farm. In this one war there are many fronts and many battles. Right here, right now, I do my small best to help us all. As do you."

Cooper replied' "You make me ashamed to take your check, senor."

He's a real pro and his adventures' excitement never comes from error or poor planning, the excitement comes from excellent planning!

A book about better men living in a better time.
A book about history, travel, valour, and living life properly. The Master recounts his personal experiences from a full life well-lived, and does so with eloquence, wit and well-tempered nostalgia. I expecially recommend the chapters dealing with his education, early military career and his devotion to wife and family. His thoughts on weaponry are, as always, well-reasoned and impeccably presented. A must-read. The edition is superb.

Cooper's finest work
This autobiographical collection of short stories are glimpes into the life of an extraordinary man. From crossing the Atlantic in a great ship in the 1920's, to hitting the beach at Iwo Jima as a Marine Officer, to exploring an uncharted river in Mexico, these stories show us what Col. Cooper has accomplished in an America very different from the one we live in.

Amongst many gems ("Art of the Rifle", "Fireworks", "To Ride, Shoot Straight..") this book ranks as his finest work. It shows that age and time have just honed his ability to express events, people, and actions that defined his life. If you like Hemingway, Capstick, or Beryl Markham's writing, then "Another Country" will not disappoint you. If only Theodore Roosevelt had these powers of writing; his life illustrated through this pen would have tremendous.

Extremely clear and helpful book!
As someone unfamiliar with construction techniques, this book was a god send to me. The writing is clear and straightforward, and it contains a series of easy to understand illustrations showing construction details. From my simplistic laymen's perspective, I can say that after reading this book, I was able to have intelligent and informed conversations with architects and contractors regarding my studio. I'm sure readers who know how to swing a hammer will feel prepared to do a lot more than just talk.

building a recording studio
This book was excellant. I have read many studio books- this one takes a few extra steps to setup a more professional envirionment then just converting a garage. I am in my 4th phase-building a house with an addition for the studio; and used this book for development of the floor plan

Practical Studio Design Tips
Cooper's book is an excelent source of practical tips on studio design. He covers all aspects of soundproofing (isolating the studio from sound transmission) as well as improving the acoustics of interior of the studio and control room.

Particularly useful are the illustrations showing different ways to construct the walls and flooring. I use these as examples in courses that I teach in Acoustics.

The book is highly readable, without a lot of unnecessary formulas and theory that one commonly finds in bools on this topic. I highly recommend this book to someone interested in building a home, project, or even a commercial recording studio. The small investment made in purchasing this book is worthwhile compared to the expense of having to correct acoustical problems down the road.

Fantastic source if information on defensive handgunning!
Published in 1974 by Peterson Publications, 256 pages, paperback sold on newstands. Chapter were: Calibers, Cartridges & Power; Actions, Stocks & Finishes; Accuracy, Sights & Sighting; Gunhandling, Care & Maintenance; Holsters; Training, Practice & Target Shooting; Practical Pistol Competition; Color Changes; Hunting; Revolvers; Autos; Derringers; Black Powder; Manufacturers/Guns, Variants; Service Autos; Epilogue; Handgun Catalog; Directory. Updated in 1979 as Jeff Cooper on Handguns but with only 96 pages. Even though published over 20 years ago, all of the information in this work is still very applicable. His preferred handgun is a lightly modified the Colt 1911A1, .45ACP. Col. Cooper's other handgun titles were; Fighting Handguns 1958; Handguns Afield 1961; The Complete Book of Modern Handgunning 1961 and The Complete Book of Shooting 1965 (pages 239-368). All of these titles are required reading for all serious pistoleers! Other early Cooper works include; Sports Cars Annual 1957, Custom Rifles 1957 and Guns of the Old West (no date but, around 1958). All except The Complete Book of Modern Handgunning & The Complete Book of Shooting were paperback and are very hard to find, they just have not survived. It took me five years to get copies of all of them and then I had them hardbound. Jeff Cooper on Handguns 1979 was his last book on handgunning. He did serve as editorial adviser to Greg Morrison's The Modern Technique of the Pistol 1991. Col. Cooper's books on defensive pistolcraft are the standard by which all others are judged, his nickname is the "Guru."

Fireworks is Cooper at his best; with tales ranging from battles and hunts to tequila making and returning home from war. Cooper knows how to tell a story right; leaving in the details that breath life into every sentence. Whether making a carbine exciting or describing some of the best history of the twentieth century, Cooper draws the reader in with his masterful use of the English language. Originally purchased for my husband, now one of my favorites!

Revealing old know-how not commonly documented
The Art of the Rifle is an outstanding collection of the various facets of riflery, presented by one of the most accomplished and articulate authors in the shooting business. Jeff Cooper presents a number of tips and techniques, not the least of which is the proper use of the shooting sling, for the readers benefit. If the book has a drawback it is this: some of the photographs did not print well and are a little difficult to decipher, particularly if the reader is unfamiliar with the concepts being illustrated. Just the same, this is the only manual I know of that contains this important information. Good Shooting...

An important work
" Pick up a rifle- a really good rifle- and if you know how to use it well, you change instantly from a mouse to a man.." writes the good Colonel.

Its disappointing how few books there are on the most basic principles of marksmanship, and how to use a rifle efficently. There is lots of pelf written for people who fancy themselves as Green Beret Snipers, but very little indeed on the most basic principles of marksmenship. And there is this book.

Anyone who uses a rifle will benefit from this book. A begineer could not get a better teacher. A person familier with rifles will get enough information to progress to expert. And an expert will still learn enough to make the book worthwhile, or at the very least be able to enjoy Col. Coopers unique writing style. A Parent wishing to teach their daughter or son how to shoot would be well served with this as a gift for them.

There are 20 chapters covering safety (nice to see), firing positions, breathing, rests and so on. The Colonel does not usually go into much depth in the WHY of things- keep your barrel off the rest as it affects trajectery , without launching into a long discourse on barrel harmonics. Despite being reasonably brief there is a lot to comprehend and practice, so you will be dealving into it for some time.

The only gripes I have is some- but not all- of the ample illustrations are a tad over and under exposed so they are not as clear as one would like. This is common, alas, with Paladin books. Generally the photos are good and the dust cover is handsome.

Most highly recommended.

The final word on the use of the rifle from the Master.
I have read Colonel Jeff Cooper's book "Art of the Rifle" and just completed his General Rifle course. Anyone who desires to master the "queen of personal weapons" will be well on the way by studying this book. The entire spectrum of practical use of the rifle is covered in Colonel Cooper's usual style. After reading the book, you'll want to take the class. Buy one for your library, and extras for friends, children, and family. Future generations will thank you for it.

The Modern Technique of the Pistol
Published in Hardcover by Gunsite Pr (1991)
Authors: Gregory B. Morrison and Jeff Cooper
Amazon base price: $45.00
Used price: $39.99
Average review score:

A good reference for the aspiring pistolero.
Being a fan of Jeff Cooper, it is easy to spot his influence in the writing style as well as the techniques developed at Gunsite. Morrison gets it all correct, although this is not the last word in development of techniques that work and are safe. That work is ongoing. Expect to read this book over and over for the simplicity and clear line of thought. This is not a how to book, that is the work of individual instructors. Helpful guidelines on tactics, the "states of alertness" or color codes set down by Col. Cooper, the tactical niche of the handgun, the combat mindset. A wonderful book for the dedicated student of the gun. As a note, I must stress that there is at least one practice that Cooper and Morrison espouse that I can not reccomend to anyone! Let the buyer beware! This is empahtically not a how to do it all by yourself book. Get some professional training and then get this book.

An excellent resource book for the serious pistol shooter
Some ten years ago I attended Gunsite's pistol courses. My goal was to use Cooper's training doctrines insofar as appropriate to improve my agency's firearms training. I was already quite familiar with those doctrines, but a week's immersion brought it together. As it happened Morrison (author of the book) was the chief instructor and I saw quite a bit of him, as well as Cooper. Not surprisingly, my class notes and the book are almost identical. As pointed out elsewhere, reading a book is not a substitute for good one-on-one training; but this is a good basic text that can be referred to again and again. There is a great deal of nonsense written on this entire subject, and the difficulty is in differentiating the very good from the very bad. This book is not perfect, but it is very good.

This is a great book- to some!
If you are a military officer, a hunter or interessed in self/home defence, this is the book for you. Cooper digs deep in the nature of the handgun, explaining every diferrent situation of use. This book I read for 30 hours from cover to cover.

A Must for Every Man Calling Himself a Free Citizen
Colonel Jeff Cooper compresses volumes of information into one well-written, informative, and entertaining volume. He shares his experiences and philosphies with the reader as a father would share them with his son at the fireplace.

As a "Generation Xer" it is a great relief to know that this country will eventually be taken back by those who followed the Ten Commandments, read the Constitution, learned shooting from their fathers, and read Col Jeff Cooper's writings.

Read the book and see.

20 years with the Colonel, and still going strong!
If you're a sporting enthusiast, whether a hunter or a shooter (shottist, to use Col. Cooper's term...), the name of Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper, USMC, RET. is probably a familiar one. I was first exposed to the Colonel's work as a young infantry officer. The Marine Corps has a vested interest in developing their troop leaders. Professional reading is always encouraged. I read a short, easily read paperback listing "Principles of Personal Defense". The author was a retired Marine named Cooper. (If you haven't read that one yet, add it to your list! ) I was amazed at the volume of eminently practical and sound theory put forth in that book. As a Grunt, I was skeptical of anything that sounded far-fetched. I'd heard my share of war stories. That slim volume caught my interest. The Colonel earned my trust by simply and plainly telling the truth about combat.
I spent quite a bit of time teaching Marines about combat. I hadn't actually been in combat, yet... still, an infantry platoon commander's job is to make sure his troops are prepared for combat.
Enter this book.
I got my first copy in the late '80's. Cooper's discussion of the Combat Mind-set earned the immediate approval and acceptance of every combat vet I spoke with. The young Marines I was priveleged to instruct received the information enthusiastically. For the last twenty years or so, I have been continuously involved in training, first with the Marines, through Desert Storm, and on to Police recruits, Police In-service, Corrections Officers and Tactical Response Teams. And the young fighters still receive the Colonel's ideas as enthusiastically as ever. My fifteen years of SWAT experience says that these theories work operationally, as well. The coverage in this work, while limited to a few short chapters, will constitute the very best investment you can make to cultivate your mind to walk easily in a troubled world. The chapter discussing how to deal with terrorism, written twenty years before 9-11-2001, ought to impress the most jaded skeptic.
But Combat Mind-set is just a small portion of the book. Colonel Cooper has an amazing knack for describing highly technical subjects such as terminal ballistics, weapons systems, bullet construction, etc. Subjects which are normally difficult to grasp come alive in varioius chapters so dedicated.
Have I left out you hunters? I've enjoyed hunting almost longer than I've enjoyed fighting. And I absolutely love a well-told hunting yarn. The last half of this book is dedicated to hunting, with a myriad of detail not normally associated with "sporting literature". From hunting "losl" in Norse woodlands, and the full panopoly of African antelopes, to the sometimes lethal encounters with his favorite game animal, syncerus cafer, the Colonel shares details that make those hunts come alive. His writing is just that good.
Is there anything critical to say about the Colonel's book? Yes. If you're offended by someone who tells the plain, unvarnished truth, if you're jealous of those who really have " been there-done that", and who write so well, that you think you went along for the trip, you may have a tough time digesting this book. "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" is not for the timid. Of the half dozen copies of this book that I own, I hope that one of them gets returned to me so I can sit by the fire and read it, once more, after this hunting season ends!

Scary but unimaginative
Good horror books on audio are hard to come by so when I came across this title I bought it right away. The stories in this collection are scary, and some will down right give you the creeps but as you listen on, you start to notice that each story is more or less like the last just altered a bit and given a new title. Simply put there are too many "the dead come back" stories in this anthology for my liking. Horror stories can be so much more. How about a Psycho or haunted song or haunted music store even. there was none of that. There were a lot of dead rockers coming back to kill or avenge and again some of the stories were truly frightening. My rating is actually 3.5 stars but it would have easily gotten 5 if there was more variety to it. It is read by various readers including Joan Jett which in my personal opinion should stick to singing. Her flat delivery does nothing for me. I'm glad the stories weren't sugar coated and that there were swear words abound. Drugs and sex of course were mentioned often though all were heterocentric, more variety there would have been nice as well. Overall, a good audio production I would recommended and it does come with a bonus cassette filled with rock songs.

The best of rock n"roll and horror combined !
This is an excellent book combining the best of rock and horror fiction. See my review of Shock Rock 2, a continuation of this fine anthology.

Blood n' Guts & Rock n' Roll
As a connoisseur of horror in general and horror fiction anthologies in specific, I have to say that this collection is one of the finest available. The intro by the father of shock rock himself, Alice Cooper, gets the book off to a roaring start. The stories that follow do not disappoint, ( a hallmark of editor Jeff Gelb's other anthology work), and makes this a must have for anyone who enjoys rock n' roll, and horror. Mr. Gelb, a second volume please?
