Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college but was not let into the Major Leagues because his skin was black. The general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey took a chance on Jackie. Rickey said would let him play if he didn't fight back over racial slurs and attacks. This was known as the "Noble Experiment". Jackie's team looked down on him and fans harassed him because of the color of his skin. At last everybody realized Robinson was a great guy and that the color of a person's skin doesn't mater. In the end Jackie Robinson won the admiration of all American people. I think that you should read this book because it shows someone with great courage.

My two year old son loves looking at the pictures in this book. The baby looks so real. I was pleased to find a book that is simple enough for a 2 year old to enjoy it and so beautiful that an adult will love reading it as well. My son especially likes the picture of the lovely mother gazing down at her child. Although the art work and Wise's poetry are what make the book enjoyable, the fact that the characters are people of color make this book a must have for our family. Because it seems very unlikely that Jesus was a blonde with blue eyes, I want to present images of a more colorful Jesus to my son. I also appreciate the depiction of many wise men from the East, not just 3.

I borrowed this book from the public library and found that it took my breath away. Author Margaret Wise Brown has done many of what are now considered classics such as RUNAWAY BUNNY,LITTLE ISLAND and GOODNIGHT MOON has one more to add to her collection. The illustrations by Cooper are amazing. The realistic pictures of the newborn baby (which remind me so much of my own sons when they were that small)in the manger are very moving. Some narrow-minded people may be put off by the fact that the main characters are African American and the book "appears" to be depicting the Holy family, although Brown's text does not actually indicate this. I also find it ironic that two different online bookstores that I went to for this title do not actually have the cover displayed. The illustrations depicting angels are absolutely gorgeous. I took the book to work to share it with my co-workers who would appreciate it and they agreed with me. I was very reluctant to take it back because I knew I would not be able to have it over the Christmas holiday. I just have to have this book for my personal collection to share with my two sons. This book celebrates the miracle of life and the joy of two parents gazing upon their son with hopes for the future. I hope this book wins an ALA (Caldecott or Coretta Scott King) award or awards this year.

I have been into Murcutt's work for a few years now, but I have been disappointed by the lack of good books on his work. Until now, the best book around was Phaidon's '3 houses'. The only projects I have been able to see have been single family houses in the middle of the australian brush--so it was pretty cool to see this book with houses (or at least A house) in an urban area as well as larger commercial type buildings (like the education center).

As far as I know, all of his projects are shown in the book--built and unbuilt in great detail. The first 30 pages or so of the book is a collection of essays by both the authors and Murcutt. Then the book gets into his projects chronilogically--each with photographs, sketches and drawings.

The last part of the book is a collection of 'blue-print' drawings showing the plans and more importantly the construction details of all his buildings--all in pretty good detail showing dimensions and materials.

Im stingy with my book money--but I definately feel like I got my money's worth outta this one.

The Pritzker laureate selected his favorite buildings for this handsomely illustrated monograph, with its insightful text by two Australian architectural professors who know his work well. Nearly a third of the pages are devoted to drawings that illuminate Murcutt's meticulous approach to design.

We enjoy bouncing our experiences and observations of each other, entertaining and teaching and learning from each other. Perhaps more importantly, we gain value and worthwhile memories-a measure of our lives. "Journey of a Southern Man" is Jackie Cooper's testament to his life and journey. With a sense of humor, he tells about himself, his family and his friends, while at the same time helps us see truths about our own lives. In frankly facing his own fear of illness, aging, loss and death, and through the power of his insight, we are challenged to do the same. Each story is a delicious slice of life and reads with the fluid simplicity of a Hemingway novel. An accomplished teller of tales, Jackie's stories charmingly blend the traditional (see chapters Gimme That Old Time Religion, Golden Rule Should Apply at Theaters and Laughing Helps People Cope) and the unconventional (see chapters Survival Tips for Snow-Lay in the Munchies, Thinner Isn't a Curse, A Former Smoker Confesses-He Loved Every Puff) Jackie's book has a keen sense of the passage of time and the existential irony that change is the universe's only constant. "Journey of a Southern Man" inspires the reader to not settle for the ordinary and helps us remember the important things in life-love, relationship and gratitude.

Jackie does a great job with his first literary effort. Hiscollection of stories reinforces the timeless concept that awell-lived, gentle life has such merit and meaning. When I finished his book, I was disappointed it was over, and am now anxiously awaiting his follow-up. I think I'd like to be Jackie Cooper if I could pick being someone other than myself.

What a wonderful compilation of the works of this unusual and extremely gifted artist! While Charles Addams is a household name, that of Edward Gorey still brings looks of puzzlement whenever it comes up in conversation. I personally feel he has never received the acclaim justly due him, but then again, his works certainly will not be to everyone's taste. At times his stories are beyond comprehension, but perhaps that was his intention--to leave us guessing or use our own imagination to fill in the gaps. Be that as it may, the illustrations are worth the price of the book alone. If you love Edward Gorey and would rather have some of his works together in one volume, do yourself a favor and purchase this book. But be prepared to enter his personal weird and at times incomprehensible world.

LES PASSEMENTERIES HORRIBLES: A passementerie is: A dress trimming, as of braid or silk embroidery (The Winston Dictionary College Edition) This story features some very ominous passementeries looming over people and animals, peeking through windows at people. :-P Acting very suspicious!

THE ECLECTIC ABECEDARIUM: Another alphabet: "Betray no qualms, when asking for ALMS" "A hidden BIRD is often heard" together with cute little pictures.

L'HEURE BLEUE: The title translates to: "The Blue Hour" the sky in the background is colored a beautiful twilight blue. The story features two creautures who resemble dogs, who both have the letter "T" embroidered on their sweaters. The plot follows their many interesting observations, during this "blue hour" :-)...VERY CUTE!

THE BROKEN SPOKE: Featuring a variety of "cycling cards" with pictures of a bunch of people (from all walks of life!) on bicycles!

THE AWDREY GORE LEGACY: A murder mystery! Who did it?! "One moment she was sitting there. The next, she had vanished into air"! It shows you a selection of weapons which may have been used, an assortment of suspicious characters, and some spots the body may be located. And Englands most sought after detective, a half Irish, half Japanese gentleman: named "Waredo Dyrge" and his inseparable canine companion "Deary"

THE GLORIOUS NOSEBLEEED: Yet another alphabet, with charming illustrations..."She wandered among the trees AIMLESSLY" "The creature regarded them BALEFULLY"...."He exposed himself LEWDLY" ;-)

THE LOATHSOME COUPLE: May be shocking to SOME, but not me. About the terrible coupling of two loathsome (pathetic and pitiful!) individuals "Harold Snedleigh" & "Mona Gritch" who plan and carry out the murder of children together( those Gorey children are so hapless!). A long story, a Gorey classic and one of my favorites. The plot may make some frown and seem distastful, but strangley....it isn't.

THE GREEN BEADS: About little Tancred, whose mother sends him to buy three pennies worth of tapioca. Suddenly he meets a very odd old mentally disturbed person (whose sex is unclear) Who reveals SHE is Tancred's grandmother 'Baroness von Rettig" who Tancred's mother had thought was lost long ago. But what ever became of the Baroness's emerald necklace?

LES URNES UTILES: The title translates to: "The Useful Urns" and here they are huge, bigger than people. They stand in the most awkward of places, and bear odd inscriptions.

THE STUPID JOKE: All about Friederich and his idea for a stupid joke, instead of getting out of bead he'll just lie there, while his family come in trying various ways to make him get up!

THE PRUNE PEOPLE: Is all about..well, prune people! People who have prunes for heads!

THE TUNING FORK: About poor homely Theod whose presence drove her family wild! Bent on suicide she rushed to the ocean, flinging herself in. But instead she meets a fanstatic sea creature who sympatizes with poor Theoda and her cruel past.

Here Edward Gorey is as great as usual! The Loathsome Couple may shock and offend some people, but it really is done in the most tasteful way as possible, for the subject matter.

This is the third of the Amphigorey series. Like those before it, this book is witty, charming, horrifying, and a delight to read. Filled with gothic illustrations, these short stories will sometimes chill you, sometimes confuse you, yet always entertain you.

DCM is a renowed Australian architectural practice and has designed many interesting projects. This book has a comprehensive coverage of its architectural works. However, the no. of photographs and drawings for each project are very limited and not fairly representative.

For example, I have actually visited the Australian Embassy Building in Beijing, China. The architectural design is very humble and static, reulting in elegant consistence with the surrounding context of the Chinese captial which has a long history. This project is definitely not recognizable at the first glance to be any works of DCM. It is the respect paid by the architects to the local context and culture which is highly appreciated. However, the photographs and drawings cannot reveal such ascent to the readers.

Generally, the photographs and drawings for the projects are fairly fragmented and in relatively small sizes, which can hardly present the whole picture of the project, not to mentioned the architect's detailing.

Consequently, as a comprehensive monograph for the practice, it is worth reading and being collected by one who likes contemporary Australian architecture.
