When Big Witch has a very important witches meeting. Dorrie and Gink are left home alone! Dorrie still manages to stay sweet and polite to a very rude and impatient guest. When the Blue Witch tries to kidnap Dorrie, Dorrie takes care of herself and Gink in a very clever little witch way. One of the best Dorrie books by Patricia Coombs, I should know I own 6 of them.

I grew up reading the Dorrie books & loved them. I do not feel that they represent or advocate any sort of wiccan or pagan lifestyle. They are merely fun books in which the main character is an earnest little girl who just HAPPENS to be a witch.

Christian, Jewish & Buddhist or parents of any or no religion can feel good about giving this book to their children.

Books that Pagan parents can feel good about giving to their children are few and far between. The Dorrie books are definitely among these few, portaying a community of witches (largely female, but with some fine male witches too) in a refreshingly positive way. The bad Blue Witch in this particular book is an anomaly and is defeated by Dorrie's ingenuity and Dorrie's mother's magic. These were my favorite books when I was a goofy little witch, and my daughter loves them as much as I once did. Amazon only offers two of the books, but I'm sure if you harass them enough they can find the rest. Wiccan parents will find the effort well worth their time.

I am so glad I have the chance to turn back time and read again the Dorrie books I enjoyed in elementary school. I guess with my own children's excitment over the Harry Potter books, I realized I wanted to visit the Haunted House with Dorrie, Gink, Cook and Big Witch! My daughter who is 15 finally sat and read some of the Dorrie books and after laughing out loud while reading it said "Oh I get it!" this was your Witch Book! Much faster reading (Short Story) still great fun! Did I mention that my children are glad I own them? Next generation for fun with Witches Step Right UP!

My parents bought me the Dorrie series, and (even though I obviously don't need them to read to me anymore) I still like pulling them out and reading even in my 20's.

Not as fanciful as the Harry Potter series, I like to think it the most important in terms of young socerers...etc. Dorrie is a little girl who just happens to be a witch.

Although I was always bugged by the lack of full color, the love and warmth Dorrie, her family and friends share for each other luminates the text. Of course, I also cannot forget Gink:-) Anybody looking for a good book that both children and parents can get into needs to check this one out.

As a child I would have my father read my "Dorrie" books over and over. I loved them as a child and I hope that one day - when I have my own - my children will love them as much as I did.

Loveable, imperfect Dorrie returns, with her distracted working single mother, the Big Witch. This time, it's up to Dorrie to save the Amazing Magic Elixer when her mother has to leave the house for a few minutes. My three year old loves the Dorrie books. Interspersed with plenty of big words, there are lots of familiar words and phrases so he can "help" read. "This is Dorrie. She is a witch . . ." and "Down, down down the stairs went Dorrie, and Gink went with her."

The Big Witch has a career, gets distracted, has headaches, forgets things, and is cross. Working moms like me don't feel like we are competing with the perfect moms in other kids books (I love Marc Brown and his books, but doesn't Arthur's mom ever get headaches???)

I can't imagine that very many people would find the four stories in this book particuarly scary. The cover art makes the book look far more terrifying than it is (although I did like the picture). But it's still a good book. Each story is about one of the four sisters from Little Women. In each story, the girl is ten, and she encounters a ghost or spirit. I enjoyed the story with Beth the most, but the Meg and Jo ones were very good as well. Amy's was somewhat dissapointing, because I didn't really understand the end of it. I still give the collection four stars, because I really enjoyed the other three. If you enjoyed the other books in this series, you will most likely enjoy this one as well.

Patricia Coombs books are fun and endearing, modeling good values for children.

All of the witches and wizards in Witchville are worried to distraction over the fate of the Town Tower and Witch Meadow, when Madame Zee comes to town in a wagon house-on-wheels pulled by a gray horse. Dorrie is fascinated by the house, but cross Madame Zee chases her away. Dorrie looses her hat, and stumbles across a mysterious machine when she goes back to find it.

Dorrie's hat is always on crooked, her socks never match, and all of the Dorrie books have enough familiar words and phrases for the beginning reader to "help" read. There are enough other words to keep adults that may have to read this book out loud over and over again interested. Look for the word "chute" in this book - when is the last time you saw this in print, except for Chutes 'n' Ladders? New, intricate details in the pictures can be found at each reading.

The Big Witch, distracted but concerned, doesn't set an impossible standard for career mothers to follow. Us mothers have enough to worry about without perfect fictional mothers, too.

Dorrie still gets into trouble and what better day to make extra mischief than on Halloween! Dorrie hates the costume Big Witch picks out for her and points out to her working witch mom that a promise has been broken. Dorrie faces dissapointment, and a runaway broom. Can she save The Great Sorceress and the Halloween Pageant? Read the Book! Great Fun for all little girls and Mom's with a Little Witch in them!

I loved this book. I read it as a child, and it was wonderful! Imagine being a little girl good witch flying around on a broomstick... All the Dorrie books are wonderful childrens' stories which deserve to come back into print!

This is the one! has everything! all of the characters! encludes in the story the importance of family, unconditional love, magic, fun and best of all a surprise cure from the Witch Doctor! I checked it out from the school library so many times that I have it memorized and I am 43!

The witch doctor comes to the rescue when unagreeable Aunt Agra comes to visit. As always, a happy ending where Dorrie with her mismatched socks, and her cat Gink go to bed with smiles. My mother read these stories to me as a child, and I loved them and still remember and enjoy them both for content and illustrations. They were and are still magical!

Dorrie is the greatest picture book character ever... Publishers - reissue the Dorrie books!

All of the Dorrie books start "This is Dorrie. She is a witch . . . " and have plenty of familiar words to help the beginning reader. They always end with Dorrie going to bed, with Gink at her feet.

The Big Witch is a distracted, hard-working single mother with a big house that needs cleaning. She's not an impossible fictional mother for us real mothers to be compared to.

Dorrie's socks never match, her hat is always on crooked, and this time, Thinnever Vetch, the patchy witch, has stolen her galosh to use as a hat. Confusion reigns when Dorrie goes to buy eggs for a birtday cake for the Big Witch, and leaves the money for the eggs in a nest.

Plenty of familiar words for the beginning reader, but intricate drawings, lots of big words, and adult syntax keep parents who have to read this book out loud over and over again interested. My three year old loves it.

For us working mothers, the Big Witch has has a career, is sought after as a consultant by other witches, and as a parent, tries hard, gets headaches, and doesn't always listen.

Dorrie, a little witch, lives with her mother, the Big Witch, in Witchville. The town begins to have nightmares and the Big Witch makes a potion to help the Dream Witch...Unbeknownanced to the town, the Dream Witch has been locked away by the Dreamyard Monsters. Dorrie must find the Dream Witch in order to stop the Dreamyard Monsters from causing a full year of nightmares. This is a really cute story that my mother read to me as a child and now I love to read to my niece. The entire Dorrie series by Patricia Coombs is worth reading...I love them...hope you will too.

I've been reading Dorrie books since I was small and now at 26 I've decided that they are an indispensable part of my childhood. All the Dorrie books begin in the same way and are wonderful to read to children before they go to bed.
