The moon captured in poetry
Moon Song has been my favorite childhood book since, oh, I don't know, kindergarten. I was drawn to the beautiful illustrations (my favorite being the zodiac picture that says nothing, but is worth a thousand words). Also the beauty of the writing, and the mysterious line that repeats about every other page: "Only the moon man knows". The book is set in a child's dream. I truly reccomend this book for a young child's bedtime story or for someone seaching for their "inner child". It brings memories of the days when everyday could be spent basking in the moon man's net "fashioned of moonbeams three".

Wonderful!
Several years ago I bought this book so that I could study andsavor the charming story and illustrations. One day a friend of mine, who was a preschool teacher, saw the book on my bookshelf, grabbed it and read it from cover to cover. She told me that she simply must have it for her kids. Having been a preschool teacher myself once, I knew that she was right, that the she simply must have it for her kids, so I gave it to her. Well, she read it to them . . . and read it to them and read it to them and read it to them. They couldn't get enough of it! I was glad that her kids had a copy but I began to miss it so much that I finally ordered another copy for myself. It's too bad that publishers let great books like this one go out of print. This book deserves a much larger readership than I suspect it has had. The contrasting temperaments of Sam Panda and Thunder Dragon--coupled with the fascinating illustrations--propel the story in a way that really captures the imagination.

Sumptuous illustrations for this fairy tale
Chris Conover's "The Lion's Share" is a modern-day fairy tale with many elements of old fairy tales. The twist is that all the characters are animals instead of humans.

Conover's story is not as rich as the illustrations that accompany it, but those are so sumptuous and colorful that they more than make up for the slight weak spots in the tale itself. Leo is a baby lion with wings who, when he discovers how to use them, accidentally flies too far from home. He lands in the kingdom of King Otto of the North--a bear who teaches Leo how to read. When Leo returns home, he shares this wonderful knowledge with his parents and subjects.

The illustrations really are something to behold. The animals all have an innate dignity and the detail is rich. There is a Jan Brett quality to Conover's work that is most becoming. All in all, I'd recommend this more highly for the pictures than for the text, but it's generally a fine book.

The Lion's Share is an amazing book!
Chris has written a tour de force. The pictures are carefully constructed and intelligently crafted and this book will enchant both children and adults. The story is fanciful and rich in verbal and visual beauty. There is an added factor, the story of Leo is a morality tale... Leo has learned to love and care deeply for books and that's an important message that parents and educators would like to impart to youngsters.

Lion's Share For Caldecott
This book has the most beautiful illustrations. There is something new to see every time you re-read the book. The theme about the 2 kingdoms shring books is heart warming. Our story telling club has used this story and the kids love looking at it. We use puppets to act out the story. This is one book not to miss out on!

The Adventures of Simple Simon and Others
I was introduced to this book at a workshop on post-modern picture books. After hearing a little about the book, I had to order it. This book takes the "simple" nursery rhyme of "Simple Simon" and intertwines various other nursery rhymes characters. The illustrations are wonderful and add such spice to the nursery rhyme. One must really pay attention to the pictures in order to pick up on various details. It's almost like playing "I Spy" with nursery rhyme characters. I would surely recommend this book to anyone.

A Wonderful Bedtime Story
I have read this book over and over again to both my children over a period of almost 9 years, and it never gets stale. The artist has taken a simple nursery rhyme, and created an entire world. Each 2pp spread has both an overall beauty, and many fascinating individual elements. Many of the characters continue throughout the book, creating a fun "where's the radish on this page?" game that is more interesting than the popular "I Spy" books. I highly recommend this book for children ages 2-7.
