RATES A "10"
BOUGHT IT AS A YOUNG ADULT AND LOVED IT. GREAT STORIES BY KNOWN AND UNKNOWN AUTHORS. WOULD APPEAL TO SCI-FI READERS OF ALL AGES. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, IF YOU CAN FIND A COPY.
Need six stars to rate this one!
When I was a kid I got this book and read it till the pages turned to dust!
The single best collection of sci-fi stories ever
These stories are gems, every single one. But read for yourself and decide. "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" is one of three or four best short stories ever written, in any genre.

Marvelous Works
Theodore Sturgeon is one of the best science fiction writers on the planet, and this anthology bears that out. From the shortest to the longest, these stories evoke emotion and interest from the reader that keeps you coming back for more. A masterpiece!
Theodore Sturgeon is a brilliant writer
This is one of the best collections of short fiction I have ever read. Sturgeon does things with prose that are usually only done with poetry.

great stuff
A lot of fun stuff from the fifties and earlier.
Some very thought provoking and well-written, some forgettable (or a little, um, outdated), but still fun the read. Everything from Lovecraft's amazing "The Color Out Of Space" to a forgettable "Counter Charm" by Peter Philips.
There's a story about excessive hair growth, one on killer bees, a horror type on a doorbell, a very good "Recruiting Station" by Van Vogt... involves some time travel... Bradbury's "Kaleidoscope"... basically 560 pages of old sf to keep you busy... I enjoyed it.

Nuggets From SF's Golden Age
Although he has since been overshadowed by John Campbell, Groff Conklin was an influential editor who produced several collections of science fiction short stories long before SF was fashionable. This book contains a treasure-trove of stories by authors whose names are still familiar as well as a few who may be new to the younger reader.
I certainly hope a new publisher decides to reissue some of Conklin's collections. It has been too long since we were able to enjoy stories by Kris Neville and Ross Rocklynne.

one of the best mystery books of all time
Edgar Allan poe can write mysteries like no other writer. I love mystery books but this one no other writer can compare to. Each mystery has a porpose, a meaning and a moral. Another great thing about the book was the wide time scale that the mysteries were placed on, in-fact one of them happend in the stone age and another in the 1920's. Over all it was an ecellant book and I would definatley recomend it to any mystery lover.
Good Collection of Poe Works
This is a collection of some works by Edgar Allen Poe. The book includes: The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Purloined Letter, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, The Pit and the Pendulum, A Tale of the Ragged Mountains, A descent into the Maelstrom, The Black Cat, "Thou Art the Man," and Matzengerstein. It has been some years since I read the book, but I do remember enjoying it.

Prose Poetry / Idea sketches / good anthology
The only complaint about this book is that the stories are sometimes so short that the characters cannot be developed. But the themes are excellent. Like poetry, just the skeletal outline of the plot will please you. Three of my favorites (relying on memory, I read this book years ago) were A.C. Clarke's story of the haunted space suit, "Columbus is a dope" by ? (both ironically comical) and the provocative "hunted aliens". I think the excellent "Time Machine and Dinosaur Hunter" story is in here too, but I'm not sure.
Also read Jorge Luis Borges "Labyrinths" (one anthology) for a better treatment of the same theme (short stories with a sci-fi element).
Great bite-size Science Fiction for fans and newcomers
I have read this book 5 years ago. The stories are great and the writing techniques superb. Some stories are only a page long and yet they will stay in your head for a long long time. I loaned my first copy to a friend and he lost it! Bought the second copy from Amazon and promised myself not to lend it out again!
Read it and get hooked to Science Fiction if you are not already a fan.
I just have a question to anyone who has read this?
Does the collection contain a story called "The Veldt"? Pleae email me at noolib@hotmail.com
