A must for any kitchen!!
My mother has owned a copy of the original "Three Rivers" Cookbook, since we lived in Indiana in the early 1970s. I find myself constantly calling her and asking for recipes. Some of my favorite recipes in the cookbook include sugar cookies and bon bons. The sugar cookie recipe is the best cookie recipe I have ever used -- great for holiday cookies; and, the bon bons are extremely tasty!! Thanks to Amazon.com, I am able to get a new copy of the original for myself and a new copy for my mom.

Simple and tasty.
A neighbour gave me this book when I just moved to US. I have used different recipies from this cookbook and I have gotten many compliments from my guest. Now I am getting this cookbook for my daughter.

This book got me hooked
I received this cookbook as a child. It was a gift from my aunt who lived in Pittsburg at the time. She also sent me Volume II. These were the first cookbooks that were my very own as a little girl and I'd have to say that they really got me interested in cooking "like a grown-up." These books with their clear and simple directions helped me make the jump from cooking with store-bought mixes to cooking from scratch. I especially love the fudgy brownie recipe and the zucchini bread recipe. I would definitely recommend the Three Rivers Cookbooks. My copies are well used to this day.

Best introductory molecular biology course out there
This is a real "course", not just a number of experiments in a row to introduce techniques. The course takes you from soup to nuts in making a "biotechnology" product, instructing the student in the most important of molecular biology techniques along the way. Safety and record keeping are stressed. The student will gain technical knowledge and also will really see and understand how a product, in this course an enzyme, can be made from a cloned gene. The idea of teaching techniques on a continuum is really a great idea. Though the second edition is now a few years old, the methods are tried and true and haven't changed so don't let the date stop you. The writing is succinct and there are helpful hints for the instructor for getting the lab classroom set up, etc. I think this course would be appropriate for an advanced high school biotech class, a post-secondary technial school or college, or undergrad college class. I highly reccommend this book.

Exactly What 's Needed--A Little Humor!
I discovered this book at my very first appointment with my divorce attorney. I was a little shocked at first, but once I started flipping through it, I so appreciated the humor in it. It's a very quick read with hand written thoughts on each page, some accompanied by illustrations that are also funny. Some of the reflections are laugh out loud hysterical and provide much needed relief given the seriousness of the entire divorce process. Others are words of wisdom that I had honestly never thought of in that way. I have read it many times and keep coming back to get the encouragement you can only get from someone who has been through it herself. It's a mix of humor and wisdom. It makes me laugh and smile, and these days, that's exactly what I need!

Medical Terminology for Health Professions
I just received this book and I think its awesome...since I am taking a medical coding course this book is very well thought out and organized..

very user friendly
I used this book during my Medical Assistant course. I found it very easy to use and understand the chapters are very well organized. The flash cards that were included were helpful also. This was the primary book that our class used to learn anatomy and medical terminology.

AN EXCELLENT BOOK
This book is awesome. I am using it as a add-on for the medical terminology part for my coding class. The CD that comes with the book is great as well...learning is easier with the CD. You can take quizzes and either print them out or take them over and over again until you understand the material...The author did a great job with this book. I can't say anything bad about this book...its just awesome. I recommend this book to anyone who needs additional help with medical terminology...

Keys for Writers: A Brief Handbook

OK....Way too expensive!
Overall, this reference book makes it easy to use proper documentation in papers. However, [the price] is too expensive for this book especially since it does not contain a complete listing of MLA documentation... If you are not new to writing papers, and just need a reference book for documentation, the MLA handbook is much cheaper and gives you everything you need.

A Handy Reference
This is a good reference for students to have when learning, or relearning, grammar and writing skills. The first part of the book discusses the writing process, documentation styles, and research. The second part goes into the mechanics of punctuation and grammar. In this latter part is a section devoted to ESL/multilingual writers, which points out various pitfalls in the English language.

As an instructor, my disappointment is that I can not use this book on its own for grammar and punctuation drills. There are no exercises in this book, although I believe there is an exercise book, which can be purchased separately.

From my students, I have found that students with a stronger grasp of grammar were not as fond of this book as those students who were struggling with grammar.

Although not my favorite handbook, this one is quite serviceable.

Why every writer /teacher needs this book!
I'm a professional technical writer and editor, specilaizing in online documents. Consequently, I have a library of about 50 reference books regarding style, usage, grammar, etc.
I use this book more than any other because it is the ONLY book with a section for Multilingual writers or for people who speak / write English as a second language. Ann Raimes has masterfully crafted a chart of common transfer errors from the foreign language into English. Though I use this chart infrequently, the fact that Keys HAS such a chart is indicitave of the in-depth treatment that Ms. Raimes accords each topic.
In addition, I like the tabbed references in the spiral-bound edition. I also bought this book on CD for ready-reference on my compuyuter desktop.

I loved This Book, It worked and works great for me. For my kind of lifestyle which is just like many others I am sure, this is a God Send. It has 5 months of planned menu's and grocery list too. All the meals take less than 10 minute to prepair, some still have baking time. The food is everyday meals and easy to make.

I really love this I hope she has a new one come out soon, or I can always start all over.

Book Review: On Becoming a School Leader: A Person-Centered Challenge

Alberto Hananel Pepperdine University - GSEP September 23, 2000 ED 762 Dr. Doug Leigh

Introduction

Arthur Combs's book, On Becoming A School Leader: A Person-Centered Challenge, provides a clear method of understanding ourselves, as school leaders, and methods needed to improve our skills.

The book is divided into three sections: Leadership and Belief Systems, Leader's Conceptions of Change and Self, and Leaders and Organizations. Each section is filled with easy to read and clearly thought out illustrations of what occurs at a school setting with educational leaders, or in my personal case a 'rising educational leader.'

Gut Reaction: I have always considered myself a 'people person.' My definition of this includes that I am able to get along well with people, interact and accept them for whom they truly are. Combs says "leaders act from the most accurate concepts of human behavior" (Combs, p. 9). He explains, in depth the value of a person-centered method of dealing with others, especially in education. He claims that leaders must always find the way to best communicate with people, which in terms become a lifetime project. Combs writes powerfully about what educational leaders encounter, on a daily basis, as well as in general terms. He does a good job expressing what occurs at schools, and how the principal or the leader of the organization must deal with the myriad of people and the multitude of different tasks and data he/she faces each and every day.

I found myself nodding, in agreement, and seeing where I stand in the scheme of what Combs is relating to his readers. Each section of the book had things that not only made me think, but also gave me a good sense of how to possibly deal with situations I will have to face while my time as Interim Principal at my school site and as an educational leader, as a whole. I also found that I could take many of the topics written about in the book and use them or pocket them until the appropriate time.

I truly enjoyed the portion titled Understanding the Costs of Empathic Leadership. A good leader must be sensitive to his/her own needs as well as those he/she leads. Combs writes, "they must keep only a tentative hold on beliefs, realizing that what they know and believe today may not be what they will know an d believe tomorrow" (Combs, p. 41). It is true that leaders are here to inspire followers to greatness and always to achieve goals, professionally and socially.

Big Picture: Reaching our goals is truly the big picture in all of this talk relating to personal leadership. It is true that leaders must first understand themselves in order to achieve greatness, before trying to get others to go with them and conquer ends.

Leaders must be able to reach followers in many different ways. Finding these make the job challenging. However, effective leaders are ones who know how to communicate, expect change, can deal with it efficiently and are not afraid to deal with it head on.

Leaders too must be problem solvers and are able to confront problems with effective solutions. In order to do this, leaders, especially educational leaders, must be good role models for all the adults, students and parents; in order to be able to take the stakeholders to a place where everyone can grow, learn to change and discover what everyone's needs are.

Implications: ØIn the last couple of weeks, I have attended the "Seven Habits for Highly Effective People" (Franklin Covey) Workshop, which has opened my eyes in how to deal, not only with myself, but also my wife, colleagues, teachers, students and other stakeholders at my work site. Combs touches upon ideas that correlate well with the Habits discussed in Steven Covey's book, Seven Habit for Highly Effective People. I found that Combs links with Habit #5 "Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood." The best way to describe this would be that a doctor, first listens to a patient, diagnosis the problem, and then prescribes a solution to the illness. Combs, in Chapter I, A Person-Centered Perspective On Educational Leadership, talks about how a leader must be understood in terms of the belief systems of those that person wants to lead. This leader must first understand the ones he leads, and then is able to explore and refine his/her belief system that will benefit for him/herself (Combs, p. 13). Again, in Chapter Two, Seeking and Responding to Data, he eludes to the fact that the leader first sought the people's perspective before responding to the behavior. This might also be part of Habit #3, First Things First, where one is to prioritize before prescribing solutions or even trying to undertake the problems at hand. Questions: Being an educational leader is not an easy task. There are so many facets of this that it is difficult to pinpoint details. How do graduate schools know whom to admit into Master's and/or Doctoral programs that are meant to train educational leaders? What are some of the qualities schools look for in a person, before making the final admission?

How do educational leaders keep all the balls in the air, efficiently? Without the support of the stakeholders (staff, faculty, parents, etc) how does the job get accomplished?

What happens to an efficient organization/school that has a good leader, if he/she leaves? How can the school recuperate?
