A Must for Practitioners of Pediatrics!
The 5-minute pediatric consult is written in an easy to read outline format. The writers have eliminated unnecesary obscure data and offer a concise outline of all major pediatric diseases. The topics are designed to be read in 5 minutes or less and all the up to date information to diagnose and treat a specific illness is included. The topics are alphabetized, so they are easy to look up. The writers are accomplised experts in their fields and the book has been edited by the distinguished Dr. Schwartz, at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. As a professor of Pediatrics, I highly recommend this book to practicing pediatricians, family practitioners, nurses and students.

Elephants you Fall in Love with
This is the most detailed book I have found on Elephants. It not only informs you all about the elephants history, it tells you all about the Authors many many years living with them and getting to know each one personally. You are glued to the pages and will not want to put it down. It is so captivating that you actually feel as if you are there with the Douglas-Hamilton family. You become involved with each elephant's life. How they are each an individual just like us. How each has their own personality. This is riviting !!! There are parts that you will laugh with, and cry with, as well. If this does not touch your heart, does not open your eyes to the beauty of one of God's most magnificent creatures put on this earth, and enlighten you to the desperate need to help protect these wonderful animals, then this is not the book for you. I highly recommend this for all ages. A MUST read for anyone who loves elephants!!

Among the elephants
In the late sixties and early seventies of the former century, young biologist Ian Douglas-Hamilton set out to study the elephants around Lake Manyara in Tanzania. He learned to distinguish each individual by such characteristics as the tusks , ears or (ear) markings. This approach would later on aid Cynthia Moss in her Amboseli elephant research. When Ian met the energetic Oria Rocco he fell in love with her and she would lend her hand to his studies and provided the wonderful photographs in this book. Among the elephants isn't quite a scientific study but more a highly personal account of a family living with elephants. The Douglas-Hamiltons care deeply about the elephants and really became their champions (they still battle for the elephants). They instilled love and respect for elephants in their two daughters as well. Among the elephants is an idyl of humans and elephants living together quite peacefully. I certainly can't forget the gentle Virgo with whom the Douglas-Hamiltons shared a unique bond or the matriach Boadicea.

Outstanding
This book is one of the greatest pieces on elephants ever read, the pace is swift and makes you not want to put the book down. I have always have been interested in elephants and read everything I could on them, and one day last summer I saw "Among the Elephants" at a small library in a suburb of my town, and before I returned it I had read it twice. The book was so good that I wanted to read it many more times, so instead of constantly checking it out I decided to buy it, so others could read it. This book was wonderful and should be read by anyone who wishes to work with elephants, or by those that just want a good book to read.

The Floating Holocaust
There are countless stories of the Holocaust that can never be told because those who experienced them were lost in the mad destructive fury. The story of the doomed ship _Struma_ might be one of those stories, except that one of the nearly 800 people on board survived the sinking of the vessel. _Death on the Black Sea: The Untold Story of the Struma and World War II's Holocaust at Sea_ (Ecco) by Douglas Frantz and Catherine Collins, is not just a survivor's story, but a full accounting of a shameful atrocity that has been largely overlooked, even in histories of that bleak time.

The history begins with an account of pre-war Romanian history, and the brutalities that occurred even before the country joined the Nazis. Only the desperate would have paid the shamefully exorbitant cost for passage on the leaky, filthy cattle boat _Struma_, with the hope of getting to Palestine. The British controlled such immigration, however, and restricted it so as not to bother the Arabs and their oil supplies. The ship left Romania in December 1941, with intent to sail out of the Black Sea, through the Bosporus Strait, and on to Palestine. The engine failed on the first day, was patched, and failed three days later. The ship was towed by a Turkish tug to Istanbul harbor. There the ship stayed for almost two months, while bureaucratic nonsense was conducted to seal the fate of the passengers. They slowly withered due to disease and lack of fresh food and fresh air. There was even bickering over a plan to let the children leave the ship, a plan that never happened because Turkey, following a suggestion from the British, cut the anchor of the engineless vessel and simply set it adrift. Stalin had ordered Russian submarines to sink all ships in the Black Sea to prevent them from getting to Germany. A day after being set adrift, the helpless _Struma_ was torpedoed, and quickly sank. Nineteen-year-old David Stoliar miraculously was rescued by Turkish fishermen, but was imprisoned in Turkey thereafter; much of the book is his story.

The horrific story of the _Struma_ is here told in a plain and unsensational way. The authors have rightly sensed that there is no need to try to make the account more dramatic by artificial recreations of imagined conversations or thoughts of the people involved. There is some heroism, like that of Simon Brod, an Istanbul businessman who selflessly devoted constant efforts to helping refugees of various kinds and from various sources. Such lights are few in this, one of the darkest episodes of the war and one that took longest to be seen clearly. There is a portion of blame to go to the U.S., which parroted the British line about the importance of limiting emigration, and did not want to get further involved. The evil of the Nazi purge is to blame, of course, in its Romanian variant, as is the ruthlessness of Stalin's blanket order to clear the Black Sea of shipping indiscriminately. Those on the _Struma_ died, however, because of the joint efforts of the British and the Turks, from veiled anti-Semitism to indifference to outright murder. Frantz and Collins have produced a vivid and shocking book to rescue a gruesome but essential story into history again.

Lessons From the Depths...
A disturbing but important tale told in rich, compelling detail. The ``Struma'' was to be a lifeboat for desperate refugees from Hitler's Europe only to become a pawn of politics. History kept this secret too long, but thanks to Douglas Frantz and Catherine Collins the story of the ``Struma'' has been recovered from the depths of obscurity. And just in time to underscore the real, human costs of indifference to brutal prower and the failure of reasoned diplomacy. Here, the victims have names and they haunt the pages of ``Death on the Black Sea'' -- as they must always the pages of history.

A BOOK TO BE TREASURED BY ADULTS AND CHILDREN.
This is a wonderful anthology. Top-notch mystery writers and their children (and, in some cases, grandchildren) collaborated on a variety of entertaining stories.

Pay particular attention to "Releve", the story contributed by Patricia Wallace and her daughter. This story introduces us to Sydney Bryant, the private eye that Pat Wallace has featured in a terrific series for adults. The titles in the series include "Deadly Devotion" and "Blood Lies".

Other outstanding stories include those by Wendy Hornsby, Scott Turow, Stuart Kaminsky, and Sharyn McCrumb (and their collaborators). This is a book that parents can read and enjoy with their children. It might inspire them to collaborate on some mystery stories of their own!

I look forward to reading the companion volume, "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories". I

mini-lesson on mystery writing

"When you think of a mystery, what comes to mind? A dark secret? An unsolved crime? A curious detective hunting for clues?"

The only mystery, the only secret, the only crime is how this anthology could be so easily overlooked. "Great Writers and Kids Write Mystery Stories" (1996) is a collection of stories written by some of today's greatest mystery authors in collaboration with their children and grandchildren. Jonathan Kellerman, Sharyn McCrumb, and Scott Turow are three of the thirteen award-winning writers that create wonderous whodunits with their offspring, ages 6 to adult.

While written at about the junior high/ middle school level, this complilation is enjoyable to all. The stories are five to several pages. Some are written with the child as the amateur detective, some are written as a type of psychological thriller.

The introduction serves as a "mini-lesson" on mystery writing. And, each story features a short personal introduction by the adult and child writing team on what it was like to collaborate on their included story. Other contributors include Barbara D'Amato, Ed Gorman, Stuart Kaminsky, Elizabeth Engstrom, and many others.

This book has the unique ability to be educational as well as entertaining. Those that enjoy this book may also enjoy the first volume as well: "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories" (1995).

GREAT BOOK FOR LEARNING 1st YEAR SPANISH!
I thought that the book was well thought out and had a lot of activities that help you connect to spanish and speak it well. My father has been a spanish teacher for 25 years and he says it is like a spanish savior compared to the other stuff he has seen (and he has seen a lot).

EXCELLENT BOOK!

Educational and Fun
I have always enjoyed the Olympics. It was very interesting reading about the start of the modern Olympics and some of the early hurdles to it. Many of the first games had no official rules and had people signing up that day or even joining in a few minutes before! Even in the later years there have been various troubles that have affected the games. With nations having battle of wills and refusing to attend. Then there are the Olympians themselves. Ones who swore they would never be back and were there the next time. Others who proved themselves even without earning a medal.

Escape and captivity in southeastern Europe
Like T.D. Calnan's "Free As A Running Fox", and Richard Pape's "Boldness Be My Friend", "P.O.W" is a gripping tale of escape and captivity during World War II. Collins's breakouts (10 in all!) take him from Nazi Germany south to Hungary and Rumania - two neutrals that later became Axis satellites. In addition to vividly describing his wartime experiences, Collins briefly analyzes the convoluted political and military situation in these two countries during that time - an aspect of World War II about which little has been written.

Great reference
This book, along with Algorithmic Approach to Treatment, are great reference books for the medical student. It is definitely going to be on my office shelf.

Good for NP students too
I wanted a book for clinicals (and class) to help with determining differential diagnosis. This book (referring to 2nd Ed.) gives the practitioner questions to ask the patient (and yourself while thinking about diff. dx.) as well as possible diagnostic tests to order.

Plenty of room for your own notes as well.

I find it useful and worth buying. Small enough for bookbag or clinical bag.

I am a doctor
ý am a doctor.I am interesting diagnosis pro. can you help me

The Story of Kodak

Comprehensive history of company & technologies it pioneered
This volume exhaustively recounts the history of "Kodak" cameras and films with an emphasis on Kodak's corporate personalities, photographic innovations and technologies. Throughout, the technical and corporate details are well supplimented by a large number of photographic prints - illustrating the fruits of the company's endeavors. The large "art book" format allows presentation of these historic photographs in appropriate sizes, and Abrams' fine paper does justice to the art. Overall, a very successful work.

Criticism: Although numerous Kodak cameras are illustrated in the book, camera collectors will need to look elsewhere for a really complete and ordered guide to Kodak's many offerings through the years. This work was not intended to simply catalog Kodak's products.

Great Book! But...
As a longtime Disney fan and Florida resident, I was very interested to hear more about Celebration. The book was good, I had to buy it for research reasons, but I finished the book a little skeptical about Disney, primarily the corporation's means of controlling its employees. The authors' experience was certainly eye-opening, as were the sacrifices people made to live in Celebration (financial and career-wise). What bugged me the most, however, were the authors' criticism of Seaside, the New Urbanist town in Northern Florida. Every chance the authors had to criticize Seaside, a different city with different aims, they pounced upon like a mouse pounces upon a block of cheese. I have lived very close to Seaside for my entire life, and if I had to choose, I'd live in Seaside any day over Celebration--the quality of building is much better, and the people are friendlier.

Not as hostile as some think
Unlike some of the earlier reviewers, I didn't think this was anti-Disney or anti-Celebration. After reading it, I almost wanted to move to Celebration myself! (If it had decent transit connections to Orlando it could be paradise). The authors' love for the place showed through, and the only thing that mystified me was why they left.

The authors do discuss the very real problems with Celebration's schools and construction; this part of the book could have benefited from a comparison with traditional suburbs, to show readers that Celebration's problems exist in typical suburban sprawl as well -- as anyone who saw what Hurricane Andrew did to Miami's sprawl houses knows!

A worthy contribution to the literature of urban planning
Authors Frantz and Collins do an excellent job of treading the delicate line between participant and observer in this in depth, inside, and insightful look at Disney's planned town.

I opened the book expecting a hatchet job (these two are reporters, after all) but discovered a balanced and feeling account of what it's like to take part in a turbulent experiment in creating a "real" EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow).

Best of all, Frantz and Collins place Celebration in the context of the rich and fascinating history of planned communities in America.

My guess is this book will prove an eye-opener for Disney devotees and detractors alike.
