A Fantastic Book
This is a massive book. It will soon be "THE REFERENCE" to most all Civil War debates.

If I were to pick just one book to go to, for a search of Civil War information, this one would have to be it.
From Battle, Politics, Leaders, speechs, debates, economics, literature, etc., IT IS ALL IN HERE.

This is one book that everyone would be proud to own. ( As well, as the kind that almost caves your chest in, laying in bed reading--It IS A BIG BOOK.)

There is such a wealth of information, and every thing is solidily backed up with excellent references. It's a fantastic book.

Indespensible Civil War resource
This humongous encyclopedia is easily the best reference I have ever seen on the Civil War. The thing is 2600 pages long, has 1600 entries, and weighs about 7 pounds, and is quite well written and edited. It covers military, political, and social events, and biographies equally. The articles are generally well written but short and introductory rather than exhaustive. Has lots of photos, illustrations and maps (the maps are OK but not spectacular), and a wonderful bibliogaphy section. I can't recommend this book enough. I learn something new every time I open it.

Civil War afficianados need this book!
First of all, this thing is MASSIVE! When you're done reading it you can use it for weight in an exercise routine. However, it has over 2200 pages so it will be a long read. That having been said, I believe this will henceforth be THE standard reference guide to the Civil War. It is packed with great photos and maps, some I have never seen before. The capsule summaries are well written and informative. I have glanced through this book and now I am ready to dive in and read it cover to cover. Get this one if you are a Civil War or History buff!

I Was Content and Not Content
What responsibility does a company have to the community in which it does its business? This question runs through the reader's mind in this well-structured interview format. Authors Cedric N. Chatterley and Alicia J. Rouverol address the impact of the global economy on a small town in Maine through their easy to read interview with line worker Linda Lord. Ms. Lord's paradoxical response as she reflects on her years working for Penobscot Poultry and its subsequent placement as the title of the book help all of us realize the economic and social difficulties that ensue when a company closes its doors. Those who enjoyed viewing Michael Moore's ROGER and ME will appreciate this book. Both works comment on how state and local governments can do more for their citizens by working more aggressively with industry and local businesses. Balancing capitalism's "bottom-line" requirements with community needs is the 21st Century challenge for us all. This book poses thoughtful questions for its readers. In addition, there are three essays that help put Linda Lord's remarks in a local and global perspective.

Enlightening reading
Mathematicians are always aware of the precision and consistency of their asserts, so they need to be trained in the very fundamentals of their science.

This book provides an enlightening vision about the basis of mathematics exploring such abstract topics as the paradoxes of set theory, transfinite numbers, and much more.

I used this book as a reference in a course I gave on mathematical logic, set theory, and the fundamentals of the number systems.

Classy, Insightful -- A First-Rate Dual Bio!
This book not only takes a fresh and thoroughly readable look at two extraordinary lives -- it also includes some excellent assessments of their songs. I've read most everything published on these two men and found this book worthwhile and highly enjoyable. If only all composer bios were so intelligently handled!

The seminal independent woman sit-com beautifully detailed..
I remember watching Marlo Thomas's entertaining sit-com in the late 60s and early 70s and thoroughly enjoying the trials and tribulations of a young struggling actress trying to make it big in the big apple. Being re-acquainted with this delightful series via cable has made it all the more enjoybale and pertinent in the themes explored and in the witty, challenging and humorous encounters an independent woman can face. Stephen Cole has added enormously to an appreciation of this ground breaking show through great research (interviews with Thomas and the writers) as well as providing an episode-by-episode guide to what made each show so special. You will find in this book references to the time, the fashion and the special chemistry between the leads in what is one of my all time favourite television shows...Thanks, Stephen for the love that shines through every page.

Marvelous! Yes, the book is "THAT" informative!
Before Mary had bad parties, before Lucy Carmicheal and Viv had their screw-ball adventures, before Janet and Chrissy stood up to Jack. And before Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia toughed it out through old age and countless dates; there was "That Girl."

Lovable Ann Marie, her nerdy yet very strong (he always seems to be punching other guys out on a count of a misunderstanding) boy friend Donald, and her worried parents are all characters in "That Girl". Ann is a girl, living on her own in NYC for the very first time. She is a struggling actress who is smart, talented, witty and determined...yet she still manages to have the poise and serenity of Samantha Stevens (when all is well on Morning Glory circle, of course).

"That" is where "this" book comes in, it was very informative in all aspects of the history of "That Girl". It went into such detail as original names of characters and original actors..etc. Marlo Thomas really seems to be a true rolemodel, she was strong, independent, and still managed to keep her poise. The actors/producers were interviewed honestly and well. A true monument to the history of TV, and one of its most ground-breaking shows.

That Book About THAT GIRL is that good!
I have to say I was very impressed with this book wonderfully written and assembled by Stephen Cole. It was recommended by a friend and I was pleasantly surprised with the care that was put into what should be called the "Official" book on THAT GIRL. This is perhaps the BEST book written on a classic television sitcom! There is something here for everyone. If you are even slightly interested in reading about the series and Marlo Thomas, I suggest you pick it up. Well done Stephen!

good book, but not always accurate
If you don't have any security background then this book is a good place to start. Be ready, however, for most of the links to be out of date (the book was published in 2002). This can be circumvented by a little help from Google to find the utilities you need for the exercises. There are also a few inaccuracies in the syntax provided. These can be resolved with help from "man" (i.e. 'man ipchains') or the help for the particular utility.

Great hands on book
I really liked this book. I liked how it did not just inform you about these tools but actually had you use them to gain understanding. Any good systems/network admin should be familier with the tools in this book. Both UNIX and Windows admins will gain great experiance and understanding of their systems weaknesses.
I have read many books on "hacking" and security and this one is the only one that actually has you use these tools.
It is setup in a very easy to follow and understand format. This book is a must for EVERY Admin, not just for preparing you for a test. Even if you never take a security exam, this book will give you great intro and experience with the use of the tools described.

Excellent reference
The GIAC Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit (GSEC) is an excellent reference to use for the SANS GSEC certification.

The book is quite different from most other, if not all certification prep guides. Rather than simply provide the reader with reference material and acronyms to memorize, the book has exercises that the reader uses for their preparation.

Each chapter has a separate hands-on exercise that is used to solidify the knowledge required for the exam. The exercises are well laid-out and organized, and proceed in a methodical way.

The only think I personally did not like about the book was its size, it is 11 x 8.5''. I found it to be cumbersome at times to use.

But its main point, content, is first rate. Anyone planning on obtaining GSEC certification should definitely invest the money- in the GIAC Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit, it is well worth it.

The landscape through a child's eyes
Gary Nabhan and Stephen Trimble have penned a fine collection of essays on how children perceive and play in their environment. References are made to psychological studies that support a child's need for wild places, but the real value I see in this book comes from the authors' own anecdotal experiences with their children. If you are a parent of small children, you will especially enjoy the ideas you will get for places to take children to play and explore. Read this book and you will begin to learn why children need to experience wild places. And why, as adults, if we share the "hands-on" experiences with our kids, our own connection to the landscape becomes more deeply rooted.

I loved it!
At first glance, this book seems to be another in a long line of published material telling parents how to be good parents. But it really seemed like a personal reflection of what makes life great through a child's eyes. Instead of trying to raise a child through adult methods, this book shows that through simply remembering what being a child was and why it was fun is enough to help you understand what your child is thinking. Through this understanding, you will become a great parent. I was very pleased with my purchase and recommend this book to anyone that has had any contact with children.

Brilliant
Stephen Wiltshire's pen and ink drawings are fantastic. He captures each subject perfectly and in incredible detail...sometimes having only seen the subject for a few minutes. Incredible drawings made even more incredible by the fact that Stephen is autistic.

Floating Cities
Reading this book was an inspiration. The intricate detail and elegance of each drawing is breath-taking.
As an autistic individual he is able to capture the beauty an essence that a normal person with their eye would not see.
His work seems effortless, and takes him no time to do at all, but yet he is a perfectionist, right down to the last detail.
I am not an art critic, but certainly now I do appreciate the architecture that surrounds me and realize how beautiful it really is, and although Autism is not really understood and how it is actually caused.
Stephen, no matter what level of autism he seems to possess, he has truly mastered and captured the gracefullness of each buillding that he draws.
In a word he is an "Artistic, Autistic Genius."

A savant at work!
This man's pictures have to be seen to be believed. Stephen Wiltshire actually is Autistic, operating on a six year old level for most of his adult life. He has a very rare talent of being able to visually process all that he sees and reproduce these images on paper. I have seen him on a TV show being flown around London on a helicopter and reproducing a image of 4 square miles, including 11 London landmarks and over 600 buildings with perfect perspective and scale in less than three hours.

This book has to be appreciated for what it is, a work of a genius!

Caution on advice found in this book
The book NATURE'S ULTIMATE ANTI-CANCER PILL: THE IP6 WITH INOSITOL QUESTION AND ANSWER BOOK by Coles and Steinman offers some questionable advice. For example, it indicates there no known side effects from IP6, when iron-anemia is possible outcome since IP6 is a mineral chelator. Furthermore, the authors claim the product is safe for pregnant women and children. Children have need for minerals and IP6 might stunt their growth. Pregnant females must supply minerals for their growing fetus and use of IP6 may result in serious consequences. Beware of the advice in this book. IP6 is a wonderful antioxidant and mineral chelator and has widespread application for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and as an antibiotic, but it should be used for short periods of time, not as a daily supplement. There is scant evidence that one brand of IP6 is superior to another.

Choices for IP-6
I would have to agree with the previous reviewer - the reader from California. The information given in this book IS thorough and comprehensive, yet there is a constant pushing of what seems to be their brand. The site, iHerb, has not only the author's promoted brand but others as well so readers and shoppers can make educated decisions.

Promoting a brand?
Though I agree with the previous reviewers and consider this a valuable book, I take issue with the stress the authors put on only buying the Enzymatic Therapies brand of IP6. Though they profess to have no financial interest in the company, they are so insistent about this that I find it hard to believe. Normally when reporting on research it will be pointed out exactly what kind of substance was used in the research. But they stress it over and over, and even go so far as to cast blatant aspersions on other marketers of IP6, with the warning that you may get sick from using other brands. I investigated this a bit and here's what I found out: Enzymatic Therapies brought some other companies to court for selling IP6, but the judge threw the case out because the others weren't selling a combination capsule of IP6 and inositol like ET was. The source of the IP6 in ET's formulation is, as near as I can tell, the exact same source as that sold by, for example, Jarrow Labs. What's the difference besides the fact that it's sold separately from the inositol? PRICE! You can buy pure IP6 and pure inositol in bulk online and just mix your own, and pay less than a third the cost of the ET brand! I have no financial interest in this, I only buy it for my wife who had breast cancer (and the rest of the family takes it too!)... One problem with so many touted cancer cures is that usually you find that the promoter has a financial ax to grind. This case looks suspicious despite the authors' disclaimer. Too bad.
