Satisfying on every level
Like Carol Gino, I am the grandmother of a baby boy who died from SIDS. She not only captures every detail of the pain suffered by various members of a family that goes through such an experience, but, better yet, shows how even this most tragic of events can have some positive outcomes in the lives of the survivors.
Given the fact that Ms. Gino is a bestselling author, it is no surprise that the book reads like a novel. It will grab and hold your interest even if you have not lived through a tragedy of the magnitude of her family.
There's no need to buy into all the concepts she introduces to learn and benefit from the wisdom that this book contains. Just be open to parts that speak to you and your world view, and you won't be sorry. And, yes, be sure to have some Kleenex at hand - just remember that if you stay with the book until the end, your tears will be rewarded.

Great for our grieving community
... well written and very interesting...We are placing "Then An Angel Came" in our lending library for the grieving community to whom we provide free services.

Outstanding
Faith is something most people want but few of us want tested. In this moving story of personal loss, renewal, and faith, we see how one woman and her family find a very personal faith, yet one that can bring hope to others. This is the story of a child's death but it is also the story of life, of grief and of moving beyond grief. Carol Gino has an unconventional gift for faith and she shares it generously.

You think it couldn't happen to you... but your wrong.
I found out about this book the summer of 2002 from the Epilepsy Foundation of America. It could so easily be my story and very nearly is.... Patient rights need to be protected but so often they are ignored. I was committed after refusing a feeding tube, but then denied medical care for my status episodes of seizures and migraines while in the Psych Ward. Nobody can ever explain what it is like to happen to you, but Carol Gino comes close. Everyone needs to read this story and then go to your lawyer and get a medical power of attorney assigned to someone you trust. Protect yourself anyway you can. This story may scare you, but in the long run you need to protect yourself. Know that you have rights. Also, know that there is always someone worse off than you, and that you must always have hope. I did, and I survived...

It's an Old Sage
The patient asks. "How will I know if I'm crazy." And the doctor answers, "If you can ask that question you are probably OK." But what if you ask and there is no one listening? Or what if your body is doing things that scare people and you have no control over it? That is exactly what happens in this true story, "Rusty's Story". There isn't any fairy tale ending. This is real life. All there is is hope. I like that.

Excellent book about misunderstood or misdiagnosed epilepsy
Rusty has epilepsy, but neither her family nor her caretakers are willing to accept this diagnosis. This book chronicles the life of a young woman who was denied the chance to live normally even though her condition is easily treatable. Even Rusty herself had misconceptions about epilepsy and what could be done for her condition. A must read for patient advocates, medical ethicists, and people who want to know more about the history of epilepsy treatment. Reading level: College/Adult. Warnings: small amount of violence. Reader considers this book very *emotionally provoking*. Reader also considers this one of her favorite books.

The "other" Box

A must read for ALL - May 2002
The "Other" Box is a thought provoking book on the subject of diversity, written for readers of all ages. The author truely allows the reader to see, hear and feel how an eight year old boys' innocence is continuously challenged by society's need for "norms". The main character Mario's spirit throughout the story is fun, uplifting and hopeful. The book gives the reader hope for a more accepting, peaceful society one day. Anyone who has ever felt different should read this book!!!

Definately a five star rating!!!!
This is a wonderfully written book told through the eyes of an eight year old biracial boy struggling with the issues of diversity. This story is told in a way that is genuine, sincere, and kind-hearted, through the eyes of innocence. I know there are many children that have and do struggle with the same issues...I highly recommend, The "other" box, to ALL school aged children and parents as well!!!! I LOVED IT!!! Good for Mario!(main character) Hopefully some day soon children won't have to check any box!!

The "Other" Box
This is truly a wonderful book on a very important subject--diversity! I wonder how many of us had to think for a few minutes before marking the "appropriate" box then gave in and marked "other" just to move on with the other questions on the many forms we have had to deal with over the years. Like the author, we may now feel a sense of obligation and pride to include the races of both parents and not exclude either one. Perhaps one day we will discontinue the whole system of labeling individuals according to a particular race and work toward total acceptance of all groups--Americans all!

A Day in the Park: The Wood Sculptures of Gino Salerno
Published in Paperback by Gino Salerno (2002)
Author: Gino Salerno
Amazon base price: $20.95
Average review score:

A delightful, colorful picture book!
This book is a "must have" for anyone, especially the Wichitans who live where most of Gino's sculptures are located! Artists, sculptors and painters will also enjoy and appreciate the talent of Gino Salerno. Not only does it serve as interesting piece of local history, it would make a great tabletop book or unique gift for someone.

Unfortunately, some of the statues only exist as photos presented in the book, due to acts of vandalism. Some have been relocated to private organizations or homes. It is such a delight to be able to see them around Wichita, and some are still around for our viewing pleasure.

This truly is a beautiful book, with some insights shared by the author on his favorite types of woods and tools that he uses.

He still does sculptures, and his contact information is in the book. After seeing all these, you'll want one of your own.

A gift of a secret fan.
As soon as Gino started with his wood sculptures, a kind lady started to secretly keep track of his work, taking pictures and notes of all of his pieces.

Some years later she died, and left Gino a complete record of his own artistic carreer.

That's why this book offers a unique perpective of Salerno's art, from it's origins to his last pieces, including some that have been destroyed by vandalism or weather, and others that have been stolen. You'll be able to see all the techniques, styles and themes that the artist has explored over the last decade. Some of the sculptures are simply superb.

It's 95% photographic, with just enough explanation to get an idea of his personality, the way he works and some secrets of intrest for other wood artists.

I have enjoyed exploring the work that this peruvian artist living in Wichita, Kansas; a work that is just starting it's way into the rest of America.

Review from the Publisher
The first biography in English of this major saint (1416-1507). Cured the sick, raised the dead, walked on water, and prophesied the future. Having lived to 91, he influenced the reign of seven Popes and five kings, and was canonized just 12 years after his death. His life was a continuous stream of miracles, yet few in the English-speaking world today have heard of him, for which reason the authors have written this book. During the period of preparation of this manuscript, we heard of four remarkable cures through his intercession implored by the people working on the book. 165pp. PB. Imprimatur.

POWERFUL AND INSPIRING
THE AUTHOR BESIDE WRITING AN ACCURATE HISTORICAL REVIEW OF THAT TIME, IS ABLE TO GIVE YOU AN INSPIRING IMAGE OF THE SAINT AND OF HIS POWERFUL MAGNETISM THAT IS STILL WITHDRAWING HUNDREDS OF FAITHFULS ALL AROUND THE WORLD. AN INCREDIBLE AND TRANSPORTING ADVENTURE IN THE PAST YET FULLY MAGNETIC, DEVOTIONAL AND INSIPRING. I WILL RECOMMEND IT TO ALL!!!!!

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: The Messerklinger Technique
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (1991)
Authors: Heinz Stammberger and Gino Hasler
Amazon base price: $389.00
Used price: $89.99
Average review score:

Review of Stammbergers's FESS
This is a well written and thoroughly illustrated book which is a must for both E.N.T. physicians and radiologists. The nasal cavity anatomy and its physiology are thoroughly reviewed. This book literally is a handbook on how to perform functional endoscopic sinus surgery through the nasal cavity. The anatomical correlation between actual cadaveric skulls and plain radiographs and CT scans provides the first time reader with an accurate depiction of the anterior and posterior ostiomeatal complexes which both occupy a space less than 2 to 3 cubic centimeters but is literally packed with small bony structures which are key in FESS procedures. More importantly the information provided gives the reader a thorough understanding as to the complex nature of chronic and recurrent sinusitis which plagues the majority of the population in the world. FESS allows surgical procedures to occur through the nose without the traditional surgical incision of skin and removal of bone to reach the underlying affected structures. Literally a thin tube slightly larger than sphaghetti negotiates its way into the nasal cavity through a bony labyrinth in order to reach certain openings and passages which for the most part are narrowed due to anatomical variations in the small bony and cartilaginous structures which make up the nasal cavity. Actual anatomical pictures as viewed through the endoscope are provided so that the reader is actually there during the surgery and can experience what the endoscopic surgeon views. The radiographic anatomy is thoroughly covered in this textbook and to a degree which even the standard radiological and neuroradiological textbooks do not cover. The illustrations are superb. This is the Bible when it comes to the topic of FESS and also the topic of anatomy of the nasal cavity. This is a must read textbook for a residents in training in both E.N.T. surgery and radiology. The language, technical jargon, and disease processes makes this text too technical for the general public.

clear explanations of complex subjects
This book is subtitled 'What temperature reveals about the past and future of our species, planet, and universe' and when I picked it up I imagined it was going to be about global warming and all that terrible stuff. Fortunately, while he does mention that dire subject, it's far from the only thing Mr Segrè has to offer. Instead his book is a consideration of the effect of temperature in all sorts of things, from the human body--warm-bloodedness and fever--to quantum mechanics. In between it takes in black smoker ecosystems, the birth and death of stars and the big bang. Segrè divides his efforts between explaining the science itself and giving us the history behind its original discoveries and does both rather well, showing a brisk pace and an engaging sense of humor the whole time.

Obviously, given the amount of material covered, some things are described in rather less detail than one might wish, and the transitions sometimes left me wondering if the author was going to come back and say more about a subject; but all that does is encourage the reader to pursue one bit or other further in other books, which is a reasonable thing for a general-audience book like this is. There were also sections--most notably the bits about extra dimensions, conditions at the time of the big bang, and multiple universes interacting like sheets (something like that..)--that lost me pretty completely. But Segrè is a good enough writer that instead of giving up I plowed ahead, and soon enough I was back on firm ground. And the end of the book, about the effects of very low temperatures on the behavior of molecules, was one of the clearest explanations of quantum mechanics I've ever read.

A "segre" book...
Outstandingly excellent, a distillatgion of the "segre family quality" in the sciences.

a good philosophy/physics read...
The author is a natural teacher who explains that this work is a reflection of his observation over time that phenomena seem to have common bases. That is, the experience of an individual may be seen to have a uniformity and/or homogenity that reflects the substrata of physical processes. Thus the sub-theme of the work is human connectedness.

I find this observation valid and comforting. Experience extends naturally from physical causes that manifest underlying order. Temperature is simply one dimension of uniformity that we can find evident everywhere we look in Nature.

This is such a nice counter-balance for the chaos that seems increasingly inescapable. The language is reader-friendly and I recommend this book to all readers.

Any reminder of just how natural humans really are can be very helpful. Routine concerns about something as mundane as the relatively stable temperature of one's own body keeps reminding us how deeply natural we really are.

Thanks to Gino Segre. I look forward to the next book.
