THIS IS AN EXCELLENT, OBJECTIVE AND WELL ROUNDED BOOK.

Brilliant
This is the most excellent and comprehensive book dealing with African Civilizations as a whole to date. He spans the entire continent, using a time frame that spans to the beginning of civilization, and completely disembowels the Eurocentric view of the black culture.

African History 201
A textbook-style study which challenges European historians. Details ancient Ethiopia, Egypt, the Moors, West, Central, and Southern Africa. An occasionally difficult, but excellent and comprehensive study. I consider this the foremost work in African history - it is for the serious student. For somewhat less comprehensive, but easier reads, look for J.A. Rogers, Chancellor Williams, Ivan Van Sertima, all whom have produced excellent works.

Africa Counts: Number and Pattern in African Culture
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Hill & Co (1997)
Authors: Claudia Zaslavsky, Claudia Zaslavsky, and John Henrik Clarke
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

This is one of the best books in African Studies.
Zaslavsky's "Africa Counts" will continue to be widely cherished for many years to come. Anyone haboring the old notion that Africans played no part in shaping world civlilization who is not changed by what appears in this book can only be someone with extraordinary racist tendencies. Zaslavky's book is effulgent because it demystifies mathematics without sacrificing details.

excellent researched and scholarly
This book is definately a masterpiece. Dr. Clarke was truly a genuis, he goes through the slave trade and shows the roles of both various European world imperialist powers, and african empires that played a role in the slave trade. He uses referrences from portuguese and spanyard sources that shows the role of Christopher Colombus, and his crew men in the african holocaust as well as the holocaust against the indigenous people of america. He shows how the crusades played a crucial role in the second rise of europe and its exploitation of most of the world. This book is excellent, it is well researched and it answers questions to many unknown or know but unanswered questions. The personality of Christopher Colombus and europe's mentality towards the rest of the world has been exposed. I seriously recommend this book for all who are interested in the subject.

Rather Millitant but Quite Good
During a time in my life, when I loved all things to do with Socialism, this book was almost my bible. Mr. Clarke preached Afro-Centric Socialism, to an extent that gave me new faith in myself. His views at time were extreme, but his insight into numerous topics gave me a strong respect for him.

The book is essentially a series of essays, detailing the problems in Africa, and to the other key areas of the Black Diaspora. For anyone interested in Black Nationalism or Pan-African movements, this book is essentially a bible for you.

John henrik clarke is "GOD" in the flesh
His works are profound. although, he has many critics who would like to ... his legacy. When i first read this book it really opened me up to the problems facing black men/women right here in the belly of the beast "America". I would recommend this book to anyone looking to face the problems that lingers still in the black communities all over the world!!!

THE TRUE NOTES FOR REVOLUTION
DR. JOHN HENRIK CLARKE WAS DEFINATELY A ELDER AND A WARRIOR IN PAN-AFRICANISM, AFRICAN-CENTRICITY, AND AFRICAN WORLD NATIONALISM. HE WAS A PROPHET AND A MASTER TEACHER. HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LIBERATION AND MOTIVATION FOR AFRICAN PEOPLE WILL DEFINATELY BE REMEMBERED. THIS BOOK IS A EXCELLENT BOOK THAT GIVES ALOT OF INFORMATION ON THE LIVES OF KWAME NKRUMAH, MALCOLM X, PATRICE LUMUMBA, MARCUS GARVEY AND WEB DU'BOIS. HE HAS CHAPTER ON THE HISTORY OF AFRICAN PEOPLE AND REVOLUTION AND ACT OF LIBERATION BY AFRICAN PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD.THIS BOOK IS DEFINATELY RECOMMENDED IN THE INVESTIGATION AND RE-AWAKENING OF THE AFRICAN MIND. MY THE GREAT GRIOT REST IN PEACE, HIS WORK AND LEGACY WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBER AND UNHELD BY FUTURE GENERATIONS

Basic Information for the Neophyte
This book is a good start for all new students of Afrocentric Studies. This give a basic overveiw of information that has been researched by master teachers such as Dr.John Clarke, Dr.Ben, Gerald Massey, John G.Jackson, G.M. James, and many others. I would highly recommend this book to the highschool student as well as the freshman of college. I would also recommend this book as a refresher for the advance student of African Studies. This book can be used much like a christain uses a bible concordence.

Great book
From the introduction of this book, you get the idea that Anthony Browder is very influence by the work done by John G. Jackson, John Henrik Clarke, and Yosef ben-Jochannan. These three men have done some of the most profound research and writing on early African history and the Nile Valley contribution to civilization. The writings of these men contain a lot of scholarship, which to many people may be very difficult to read and understand. This is why this book is so important. Anthony took what Jackson, Clarke, and Jochannan wrote about in their books and translated it so that the average person could read and understand.

The theme of this book is centered on early Africa, early Africa's stolen legacy and early Africa's contributions to civilization. It also puts an emphasis on how those early contributions was translated into today's American society. In chapters 1-3, Mr. Browder talks about the people of early African civilization. He tells where they came from, who they were, what they did, and when they existed. He puts a special emphasis on the many accomplishments of the early African people. In chapters 4-7, Mr. Browder talks about the stolen legacy of early African civilization. He shows how other civilization took what the early African contributed and made it its own. He goes to great links to show and prove that what the Europeans claim as theirs was actually African in origin and rightfully belong to the African. In addition, he explains how American society has adopted early African symbols into its government structure. The finally chapters 8-10 are designed to assist the African/African-American mind to cope with the information given in chapters 1-7. The last chapters all have to do with building pride and understanding where we still must go and what we still must be.

The period of this book stretches from about 4000BC into the present. The book is structured as to give a chronological development of early African history and its gives you a progressive pattern of how this history has contributed to civilization.

The first seven chapters of this book are excellent. I have read many books on the subject of early African history and its contribution to civilization. This book is the easiest to read and understand. I believe that my son when he reaches the age of 10 would be able to read and comprehend this book. The only weakness of this book is chapters 8-10. These chapters I feel are an extension of his earlier books The Browder File Vol. II and I. I feel as though these chapters have nothing to do with the basic theme of this book, which is centered on early African history and its contribution to civilization

Overall, I think that this is a very good book for young children or for adults who have an interest in learning about early African history.

Excellent
This book is excellent for learning about Kemetic (Egyptian) origins. Everything that Bro. Browder says in this book is backed up with hard evidence. This book should be required reading for all. It opens your mind up to things that I bet you never knew. Unfortunately, most people will not read this book for different reasons. It is up to those of us who do have this book to spread this important information.

Too Scary for Kids
This is a book that is too dark and scary for children. The book contains black and white illustrations of violent and frightening scenes. One implies slave rape. Another shows rats eating the corpses of dead Africans. One quote from the introduction states, "many [Africans]... chose suicide--mainly by jumping into the shark-infested ocean," As someone who has a Masters degree in early American history, I think discussing this subject is vital to the American dialogue. However, the style of this book is not fit for a child. I would rank this book without a star if Amazon's rating system would allow me to do so.

The Power is Speechless
This book brings out soo many emotions. Words need not be said..... just look..... A story that is told so very vividly... the pictures soo strong... the pain soo clear. I didn't realize it was a children's book, I got it because of the power in the pictures.

The pictures tell more than the classroom
This book... I didn't know it was a childs book. I bought it for me. I saw the beautiful black and white pictures... and the story they were telling and knew I needed this book. A very strong story told with few words. Get the book.

Enlightening
This book really enlightened me. It gives a lot of information about a very important man who was a great historian, among many other things. I had heard so much about Dr. J.H.Clarke but knew nothing about his personal life before reading this book. Also, although I had read some of his books I never had the opportunity to attend any of his lectures, seminars etc. and... see him in person to learn more about this man - I know he frequently enlightened many with his small group settings at "Clarke House" in Harlem, New York and that he also gave lectures at many of the City of New York colleges, and at other sites for those who were fortunate enough to attend. Many questions I would have asked him, if I had ever met him, were addressed in the book. I often wondered about his path in life and gained a lot of information about his path while reading this book. The book is easy to read and just about the right length. I suggest the reader digest the words a bit at a time, to retain the information given. It was pointed out to me that this book was shaped by information the writer gleaned from Dr. Clarke himself. It was not just a compilation of information obtained from other books. The writer actually heard Dr. Clarke tell her about his long life from his humble beginnings to the later years. Dr. Clarke enlightened many and so did this author.

greet book
THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT, IT GAVE VERY GOOD INFORMATION AND PICTURES ON A MAN WHO HAS DEDEICATED HIS WHOLE LIFE TO THE AWAKENING OF THE AFRICAN MIND AND THE INVESTIGATION OF OUR HISTORY. HE WAS TRULY A MASTER TEACHER AND A TRUE PAN-AFRICANIST. I HAVE READ SOME OF HIS BOOKS AND I HAVE SOME OF HIS VIDEO LECTURES ON TAPE. I JUST SHURE HATE THE FACT THAT I NEVER GOT TO MET DR. CLARKE IN PERSON. HE HAS BEEN A TRUE INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF MANY OTHERS. I WILL MAKE SHUREM PERSONALLY THAT HIES DREAM OF AFRICAN-CENTERED, OR AFRICAN-CENTRIC SCHOLARSHIP AND PAN-AFRICAN NATIONALISM AS WELL AS AFRICAN WORLD LIBERATION IS KEPT ALIVE.
