Required, timely reading
Clark's account should be required reading for everyone involved in planning and explaining the upcoming war against terrorism.
This is a remarkably timely book. General Clark commanded NATO during its first war, the war to push Serbia out of Kosovo. Clark candidly outlines the political complexities of an alliance, the gap between the view from Washington and the NATO headquarters in Washington, and the impact of the news media on both the military and diplomatic campaigns.
As we enter what will almost certainly be a long campaign against terrorism, a campaign that will involve allies, the news media and probably some significant military actions, there is a lot to be learned from Clark's description of the constantly evolving balance between the politicians, the military, the diplomats, and the news media. The anti-terrorist campaign will be longer and more complicated than the NATO intervention in Kosovo and that was so difficult it almost failed.
Clark describes a pattern of destructive dishonesty that permeated the Clinton Administration. Clark could never count on candor from Shelton (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs), Secretary of Defense Cohen, or President Clinton. Contrast that with the fact that we have every reason to believe President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretaries Powell, and Rumsfeld. This administration will prove far more reliable and far more honorable.
However Clark cautions that far beyond the weaknesses of the Clinton Administration there is a new complexity to coalition warfare in a 24-hour news media environment that will require new thinking and new systems to sustain effectiveness and ensure victory.

The Kosovo Campaign
General (retired) Clark writes an excellent piece on both the events leading up to our entry into Kosovo and the continued decline of the American warrior spirit.

I served seven months in Kosovo with KFOR 1B on Camp Monteith. General Clark's book answers many of the questions we all had while patrolling the trash strewn streets of Kosovo, "Why the hell are we here?". General Clark gives a great lead up to the Serbian aggression in Kosovo and the Albanian provocations which we once again see in Macedonia. His thoughts are well written and easy to read. Starting with the Dayton peace accords, which he was a key player in, Clark takes us through the twisted negotiations and difficulties of the Balkans. His story shows the inherent difficulties in coalition warfare and how I (and thousands of other soldiers) eventually arrived to put "boots on the ground." The other interesting aspect of this book is to watch how the military was severely restricted, almost to the point of endangering American lives, to protect a weak and unclear political agenda. Not only did General Clark have to fight Serbs, NATO, the air power pundits and the media, he also had to fight against his leadership in SecDef Cohen. A great read and interesting story about NATOs first war. Lets hope we never have to go through an experience like the Kosovo Campaign again. Buy this book. You'll throughly enjoy it! -CPT S

A Very Insightful Look at Waging Modern War
Although it is primarily a memoir chronicling General Clark's experiences during Operation Allied Force (the air campaign against Serbia during the Kosovo crisis), it is also a sobering look at waging war during the 21st Century. General Clark offers a revealing look at political intrigue in the Pentagon and the State Department during the second Clinton administration. More importantly, he demonstrates how such intrigue had an adverse impact on his duties as NATO's supreme military commander in Europe. Clark makes a strong case that NATO's involvement in future European conflicts will require mutual consensus among NATO members; a difficult political minefield he successfully navigated. Furthermore, he also stresses the need for more flexible, more mobile, American military forces in future wars. Needless to say, his splendid prose is probably unsettling news to some Pentagon and State Department planners. Without a doubt, this is an important book for military historians and one which should be read by those involved with - or interested in - American military strategy and tactics for the 21st Century.

An Average Overview of Triathlons
This was the 1st triathlon book I bought. It gives an overview of the equipment, types of training in chapters on swimming, running and riding, time requirments, nutrition and sample training plans.
It is NOT a training book perse. It will give the reader an idea of what it takes to start triathloning without overwhelming him and her.
I think Triathlon 101 is better but it's a personal opinion.

Pretty good, few problems.
I found this book to be fairly helpful. I especially liked the descriptions of form drills for all 3 disciplines. The informaiton was useful. What I did not like is that since I am new to the sport of triathlon, there were phrases used that I did not understand. This was most evident in the workouts. The text would describe everything well, but then in a listing of a sample workout it would use terms not explained in the text. This made it hard to figure out what to do sometimes. Also the author says he'll show you how to have many peaks in a season, but then really doesn't ever give that information.

An Outstanding Book!!
A fantastic book and on the "top two" of my recommended reading list for beginning triathletes. If you are going for detail and want in-depth and technical information on how to develop a training plan, go with the Triathlete's Training Bible. If you want a solid overview of the sport of triathlon, this is the book for you.

Swim, Bike, Run is written in a very straight-forward style and gives sound, practical advice. I am an avid reader of "things triathlon," so I've read just about every book out there. The most telling insight into how much I value this book is that this is the book that I consistently return to and read the night before a race. I also look to it for a "refresher" when I want to improve form/technique and when I am evaluating how my training is going mid-season. The swimming section is particularly effective and the illustrations greatly helped me on technique issues.

A great read and highly recommended.
