Price of Power: Biography of Charles Eugene Bedaux
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (1985)
Author: Jim Christy
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $8.58
Average review score:

excellent story of most interesting manager/adventurer.
this book gives a compelling story of a self-made millionaire, creative and adventurous. The Author makes strong case that Bedaux was actually NOT a NAZI collaborator, but rather sacved many Jewish lives and fortunes from Hilter's perils.Bedaux' explorations are well worth the read as are his contributions to 20th Century management.Bedaux was a facinating figure in this time in our history,,,,more should be written about his life and times.

Facinating Personality!
I have researched Charles Eugene Bedeaux and find this work the very best on his facinating life. I now firmly believe he was NOT a Nazi sympathizer, but in reality did all he could to use his position to subvert Nazi efforts in France. Ask the old men of Tours who still remember all he did for this French town!

Jim Christy is a superb researcher and writer. I highly recommend this book....it reads more like an adventure novel!

When is the movie coming-out?????

Worse Than It Looks
Christy's book was obviously written for someone doing a Kerouac paper in their high school English class. This is the type of biography you wish had never been published. The fact that it is in print seems to validate what Christy has written. There is so little presentation of known fact--more hearsay and legend than anything else. For instance, Christy claims Kerouac's last words were, "It must have been the tuna fish." I'm shocked neither Charters nor Nicosia were able to dig up this information--but Christy was? Who will be the next self-proclaimed "Beat Researcher" to cash in on the Kerouac revival? This book is on par with "The Kerouac We Knew." Yet another shoddy attempt at exploiting Kerouac's celebrity.

Kerouac's Soul Revealed
Christy offers an insightful and different look at Kerouac and his works than most biographies. He discusses what was important to Kerouac, such as religion, a topic often given only minimal treatment, and the literary acceptance he wanted but instead received infamy which pushed him along to the grave. Unfortunately, this excellent information is not really integrated into the biography but comes in the last few chapters. (Almost all biographical information about Kerouac's later years is also in Nicosia's Memory Babe.) For those dozen or so pages the book is well worth it!

The best book on Kerouac!!!
Forget all the [junk] that most biographers scribble in their dark corners about perhaps the greatest writer of the 20th century (except for perhaps Blaise Cendrars) -- read this book and take a glimpse into Kerouac. Christy has given a great snapshot of the man that was Kerouac. Anyone who slags this book hasn't read it, let it roll around between their ears and finally digest the whole shooting match.

This is a great book!

The Buk Book: Musings on Charles Bukowski

The buk book: musings on charles bukowski
A shallow treatment, written by what must be a graduate school reject. Somebody who--though he makes it a point to say he corresponded with Bukowski favorably--Bukowski would have hated. A phoney. I ordered it for a class I teach and found it completely unusable. A series of anecdotes--rehashes of autobiograhpical short stories--strung together by half baked theroies. The lesson is that just because somebody loves to read an author doesn't mean they can write well at all about that author.

Good but uneven
I enjoyed this book but felt like the author, who states that he spent a lot of time with Buk, decided to throw together this uneven, short book to make a few bucks. The only pictures appear to be from a single night in the early 70's, and appear to be pictures Buk probably didn't expect to ever be published. Enough whining...it did offer some good insights into the genius of Buk!

Informative and Intertaining
Sometimes when reading Bukowski, it becomes rather hard to tell the difference between his fiction and when he's embalishing on his experience. The best thing about this little book is that Christy tells us who the real people in Buk's stories were, and what really happened. It's almost a compact bio too, and I don't have the patience to read one of those huge ones about Buk's life when I could be much more pleased getting it from the man himself, even if it's not always true. A good book, but a little overpriced in my opinion.

Out of date
Good guide for 1997, but 3 years later it is out of date and does not contain many new sites. Web directorys should be updated yearly at the least.

Irrespective of contents, physical properties cheaply done
I was very unhappy when I saw the cheap quality of The Big Basics Web Directory published by Que.. The paper is the kind used for coloring books, and the printing is poorly done. In some instances it is all but impossible to read the black print on dark gray background. I had expected to receive a book of at least as good quality as Que's Complete Idiot's Guide to Windows 95. Sorry about this poor review. This is the first time in a long time I've been so disappointed in a book I had ordered sight unseen.
