A pioneering work.
The skill with which Ms. Brooker weaves together the stories of the AIDS patients she is following with the growth of her own awarenesses and her own personal story is remarkable, and what makes this such a compelling read.

An Absolute Must Read
I have never read a first chapter of a book that so moved me as this one did, about the author's friend who was the first person she knew who died of AIDS. After reading it I felt I knew this man, and I truly mourned his death, even though I never met him and he died over 15 years ago. That's how powerful a writer the author is. With every chapter, she uses the words of the person she is interviewing along with her own thoughts and feelings to tell their story. She writes with love and the artistry of a poet. This is a wonderful, moving, beautifully written book. I only wish this will be read beyond the gay/AIDS community. I only wish everyone in America would read this book, to see the suffering that ignorance and fear has created in far too many lives.

At first i thought "Oh no not another AIDS book"
Let's face it nobody wants to read another book on AIDS. And quite frankly neither did I. But this isn't a book about AIDS. It's a book about a straight woman in San Francisco surrounded by loving beautiful people who have been shunned, discarded and ignored. It's a story about a woman who confronts her own fears, prejudices and ignorance. A woman who is haunted by a promise she made to a dying friend 20 years ago. A promise that she keeps inspite of editors, publishers and agents who simply don't care.

Extensive research
An extensive research to come out of Hartford Theological Seminary, which details quite importantly the life of clergy. However, I would argue that much of the comment is equally applicable to male clergy, so the book is not as exciting and as groundbreaking as one would perhaps expect. Similarly, from a feminist perspective, I was somewhat surprised to find a comment in the book which tells us that women clergy are often more able to go where they are needed in small communities because their husbands will have good jobs. Surely this is a step backwards? Otherwise a good read.

worth 20 min
A nice story about denying a girl who forgot where she came froma blanket. It's worth the 20 minutes it might take to read it if you have NOTHING better to do

Everyday Use
I think this book is very good to learn a lesson about hertiage. Of how you should use your hertiage in everyday use and not just hang and display it to others.

Live with it
The funniest part was things that we as parents have all said to our children.Another persons opinion of our childrens choices has gotten to be too much of everyone's business. Makes you wonder what are they hiding. I sympathized with them all and then I thought they don't need my sympathy it isn't as if they are ax murderers. Respect each others choices

Excellent Pain Reliever
I read this book when my son was 17, I was a single Mom going through alot of pain, Barbara helped me to have faith and look to God for all of my trials. He was very rebellious but reading this book helped me to hang on, sometimes only by a thread. I must say, being at the brink of suicide, Barbara was my life-saver and best friend. I would read it over and over and a wave of peace would come over me, the book was written under the teaching of the Holy Spirit and I have read many of her other books and combined works, all of her writings have helped me immensely. They have helped me to see that I am not alone in my pain. God bless you Barbara. I even laughed when I thought I could not laugh, and alot of tears were shed, liquid prayers to God. You will love this book, especially if you are a Mother of teens who are rebellious.
