An excellent source of information about medication choices
It can be overwhelming and confusing to try and figure out which drug is best for a particular child with a special condition. This book explores all sorts of psychiatric drugs for conditions ranging from Attention Deficit Disorder to depression, bipolar disorder, etc. Each section is clear and each medication is discussed fully, including possible side effects. I've often felt like doctors haven't fully answered my questions about certain medications but this book helped me to fill in the gaps and feel confident about the choices I made for my child. The best book on the subject I've found so far (and I've looked at quite a few books).

Basic help for the parent with a mentally ill child
I highly recommend this book to any parent who is contemplating putting their child on psychiatric medications. My child has been struggling on/off for the past three years with a number of issues that finally lead to an evaluation for psychiatric medication. The psychiatrist, while skilled, is unable to provide the support and education necessary to the parent to make this major decision an easier one. This book filled in the gaps. It was extremely readable and provided very helpful information regarding the various disorders and the preferred medications for treatment. While I have not yet decided to place my child on medication, this book will make the decision making process much easier.

A useful book for both parents and professionals
When parents want to know more about medications for their child's disorder, I often refer them to this book.

The book is organized by type of disorder (such as AD/HD, depression or anxiety) and by type of medication. This is good because some people want to know about a specific class of medications, while others want an overview of medication strategies for a particular disorder.

I particularly liked his suggestions on communication between parent and psychiatrist. This should help parents formulate their questions and feel comfortable asking them.

This book is also an excellent overview for medical residents and non-medical mental health professionals.

Beautiful, Chilling Story
This dark and poignant tale tells a very important story. he story chronicles the journey of 3 troubled and homeless kids. The story switches point of views from Curl a 15 year old prostitute to Custis a homeless boy who has escaped from his abusive "owner." The leader of this crew is Boobie who has just killed his parents and kidnapped his baby brother. This book deals with very difficult but important issues, and Rapp weaves tthe story beautifully. The slang is a bit difficult to understand in the beginning but once you become used to it, it adds a whole new element to the story. The story is distrubing and not easily forgotten but it is meant to stay with the reader. This haunting book is not one you will regret reading.

Assessing the Developing Child Musician: A Guide For General
This book is a very timely and important addition to any music teacher's professional library. Tim's book is a result of scholarly research as well as considerable experience teaching children, which I think is very important. He addresses all aspects of assessment for the general music teacher, from record keeping to assessment design to reporting progress. This book is incredibly thought provoking while not telling you "this is what you have to do." I highly recommend it for any music teacher, especially elementary music teachers struggling with assessment and reporting progress. It would be an excellent tool for an entire music department to read and discuss.

Good, practical and reminded me of what is important in life
I enjoyed this book, it was clear, easy to read and I found many great nuggets of wisdom in this book for parents like myself. It reminded me of what is important and how to get back to those important things with my kids. I like how the chapters are set up so if you are dealing with a specific thing in your family or life, you can just check out that chapter. I recommend it to most families I know today who are "flying by the seat of their pants"!

My Mission Field
Offering ten soul nourishers as the basis for this book, Timothy Jones gives wonderful encouragement for any phase of parenting, grandparenting, nurturing, teaching or guiding children in their faith jouney. The book offers wonderful ideas for teachable moments to nurture our children in their faith walk. As a parent of 3 young children I found this book very helpful in identifying very practical ways to introduce my children to and help them grow in their relationship with God. This book also brought back many memories of the ways in which my parents had nurtured my faith walk. I am grateful for the book and will apply many of the ideas and thoughts in my walk with my children. I know the most important thing I can do for them is introduce them and nurture their relationship with our awesome and powerful God who loves us each so very much, so much that he gave his only Son's life for us.
