Fun for adults too
I expected a lot from this book, from the catchy title and the great illustrations, and it delivered! My two girls, ages 5 and 3, absolutely love it too. The wolves try to be so scary, but they just end up being funny. Out of the many, many children's books I have read to my girls, this is probably my favorite. A definate buy!

Other Books smushed in one
The coolest part of this book for me is when Herb went to hisbook and shook it so the fairy godmother fell out and almost broke herleg. I also liked the title of this book it was very very shiny in thesun. The words were cool too wavy, and wired they were alsosideways. But when you see the nose and that every time you see Herbhis nose looks different. The illustrations for me were perfected. Ithink anyone who is the right age should read this book and if yourtoo small went you grow up you should read it! This book for me is oneof my favorite books that I have read so far. This I one of myfavorite books of my life. I hope you like this book. ....

Fun with Fairy Tales
There's nothing little Herb likes more than hearing his mom read his favorite bedtime story. You know, the one with the little girl in red and that horrible, slobbering, hairy wolf. And each night after she's finished reading, Herb makes sure she takes the book with her when she leaves his room. Mom thinks storybook wolves are harmless. Herb's not so sure and he's not going to take any chances. Sure enough, one night just as she's finished reading, the phone rings and his mother leaves the book lying open, turns out the light and runs to answer it. The next thing Herb sees is a couple of really nasty, hungry, drooling wolves that think he would make a good meal. But Herb's thinking fast, opening other story books and shaking out a few characters who might be able to help him outwit these two ugly carnivores..... Lauren Child has done it again as she captures the very real fears and runaway imaginations of the young mind. Her witty, silly text is only outdone by her marvelous and creative collage illustrations and youngsters will enjoy all the bright and busy details. With a surprise ending will have both kids and grown-ups laughing out loud, Beware the Storybook Wolves is perfect for youngsters 4-8 and is sure to amuse and delight everyone in the family.

Wonderful - My 4 year old loves it!
I saw this book and didn't think anything of it, then I checked it out at the library and discovered that my daughter loved it (4 years old) and it brought up many discussions about herself and others. We love reading it together! I had to buy it because she kept wanting to check it out again, and again.

An excellent book, kids and parents will like it!
This is an excellent book, it's not hokey and fake like many "self-esteem" books. The content is right on target, speaking exactly to kids' interests and parents' concerns. My first grader took it to school to read, the teacher loved it--wanted to know where I got it.

Truly remarkable in affirming children's self worth
When I inherited my now nine year old daughter after her mother died, this is a book I wish we had found right away. Before we finished the first page, Kim started saying things like, "This is excellent," and "This is my favorite book ever." All of the concerns of this young lady were addressed and affirmed: appearance, feelings, privacy, changes and more. Just Because I Am truly helped her understand that even with her experiences, she really is a worthwhile person. Hearing it from the perspective of a stranger (the author)and accompanied by the brightly colored illustrations of just the right complexity gave this much more weight than all the times I have expressed similar concepts in less lovely prose.

Excellent, Practical
Thank you for loading this book with usable information and not just more and more theory. In fact, I don't think I have ever read such a clear and sensible explanation of the adolescent process. This is a very important book and should be a reference in all places of learning, treating, healing and thinking - including the family.

New and Critical Information!
The combination of theory and practise in this book is a brilliant combination! I have bought copies for every mother I know. It is a must read for parents of children of all ages. Our 10 year olds will soon be facing the perils of modern adolescence! A mother

A FUN WAY TO MAKE A POINT!
Clarice Bean, the irrepressible little charmer created by Lauren Child, is seeing green. Green as in ecology, that is.

School is getting interesting for Clarice as she's learning about our planet Earth. Gravity is an amazing force to her, as is the fact that the sea doesn't spill over at its edges. Nonetheless, her class is assigned a project called The Environment. She's pleased because to her that is simply nature, and she knows a lot about that as there is plenty of it in her backyard.

Being paired with Robert Granger, the pest who lives next door, is enough but when Clarice learns a tree on her street is about to be cut down, well, things get really rugged. Brother Kurt decides to try to save the tree by camping in it, and others sport "Free the tree" signs.

Just imagine what Clarice comes up with in order to save the tree. Once again, Lauren Child comes up with a fun way to make an important point.

...

Clarice Bean is Back and Better than Ever.....
Poor Clarice Bean, just a bit late to school, and now her teacher, Mrs Wilberton, has paired her with that awful Robert Granger for a project on the environment. Boring Robert wants to see who can walk faster, a snail or a worm. Could things get any worse? Obviously, yes they can, as her teenage brother Kurt informs the family. The city's going to cut down a tree right on their street. An old hundred year old tree. Kurt is upset and too depressed to even eat, and decides to camp out under the tree to save it. Pretty soon, the whole extended family gets involved, making signs that say "Free The Tree", and spaghetti marinara dinner to eat while sitting in the tree, and becoming ecowarriors. When the local newpaper sends a photographer to take a picture of this ragtag protest, Clarice and Robert (of course Robert Granger got himself in the picture) find they have an even better environmental project in the works..... Nobody captures the irrepressible and feisty grade schooler like Lauren Child, and Clarice Bean's latest eco-adventure is sure to have readers laughing out loud. Her fast-paced, text is entertaining and engaging, true to life, and full of witty asides and observations. But it's Ms Child's marvelously creative and innovative illustrations that make this book stand out. Her busy and clever collage artwork, mixing colorful pen and ink drawings and photographs, with imaginative fonts of all shapes and sizes, traveling up, down, and all around, will have youngsters entranced and poring over the pages, finding something new and interesting every time they open the book. Perfect for readers 7-10, or younger for reading aloud, What Planet Are You From, Clarice Bean? is a charming and hilarious, manic romp you don't want to miss and the third installment of a terrific and delightful series.

Great addition to your child's "library"!
What a cute story! Charlie is in charge of little sister Lola and decides to play a trick on her. With Charlie giving silly names to foods that Lola claims she doesn't like, Lola plays along and tastes foods she has insisted she will never, ever eat. My 6-1/2 year old loves this book; it's a bit too old for my almost 3-year old.

What I like best about this book are the real photographs of the foods (peas, carrots, fish sticks, etc.) that are incorporated into the fun cartoon illustrations.

This is a engaging, slightly offbeat story which makes it stand out from the zillions of other children's books out there.

A Perfect Book to Share With Your Fussy Eater
"I have this little sister, Lola. She is small and very funny" These opening lines set the sweet and gentle tone for a tale about two sisters. One (Lola) with a very long list of foods she will not eat, and the other (Charlie) with the task of feeding dinner to her fussy little sister.

It could be a recipe for disaster -- I'm certain this situation would have played out quite differently with me and MY little sister -- but Charlie's creativity and sense of fun save the day.

My seven-year old fussy eater nearly fell out of his chair laughing when we read this book. He clearly identified with, and enjoyed, Lola and her reasoning (for example, peas are "too small" and "too green"). While I'm pretty sure my son will not change his eating habits because of this story, it did give him a sense that he is not alone in the world with his funky tastes while reinforcing the idea that his tastes may change.

Great story, cute illustrations, good lesson.

This book is magic!
Thanks to the mealtime antics of Charlie and Lola, my kids now ask every day if they can eat carrots, tomatoes, potatoes and peas. It's magic!

The books' pictures, typesetting and storyline are all fantastic, whether you are a child or adult. This and 'My Uncle is a Hunkle', also by Lauren Child, became instant favourites with the pre-schoolers and the adults the minute they entered our house.

FUNNY, BEAUTIFUL PICTURES, PERFECT FOR AGE
My four-year old daughter and I love this book. The strawberry milk in the "barbie-like" cup, the toothpaste, the pajama's - illustrated just for a little girl - all things my daughter loves. Lola's wild imagination and her silliness is so delightful to read at the end of the day. We love it so much we want to share with friends and are buying for birthday gifts.

My kids can't stop asking for it
My 2 and 4 year old love this book and they want me to read it over and over again. They love the pictures and the story and just everything about it. The 2-year-old loves the imaginary tigers, which always seem to bother him when he want to go to bed too.

hip design, fun book
My daughter is 2 1/2 and this book is her favorite. The design is very colorful and interesting, and the dialogue between the characters, Lola and her brother Charlie, is the way real kids talk. Lola doesn't want to go to bed, and it is Charlie's job to get her there. Lola has quite an imagination and Charlie must give bedtime drinks to imaginary tigers, shoo a whale down the drain before Lola can bathe, etc. This book is great for toddlers. Lauren Child's Clarice Bean books are for older kids, but my daughter also loves those too, as does my six year old niece. The best are Clarice Bean, That's Me, and What Planet are you from, Clarice Bean?

comedic chaotic city life!
What a busy book! Lauren Child has created a tongue-twisting, mind-boggling story about the adventures of two city kids whose Mom must hurry off in help of her own brother, a policeman, who has slipped on a doughnut & hurt his legs.

Who can Mom get to babysit her two darlings? Not her older children. Not anyone in her family, nor any neighbors until, her daughter asks about Uncle Ted. What a good idea!

Safe in the care of a Fireman, Mom rushes to her other brother's side, & the fun begins!

I realize Lauren Child thinks she has written "only" a children's book - however, once you've read GUESS WHO'S BABYSITTING? I bet there'll be other bigger thoughts simmering away!

A great family read!

Rip Roarin' Fun!
When Clarice Bean's Uncle Ernie slips on a doughnut and breaks both his legs, her mother has to rush to New York and help him out. Unfortunately her dad has to go away on important business and the only person they can find to babysit Clarice, her phone talking older sister, Marcie, her sun hating big brother Kurt, her accident prone little brother Minal and wandering Grandad is Uncle Ted. Clarice is thrilled. Uncle Ted is the best. He's a firefighter who loves westerns, can lasso lamps or kids and has been known to break a few things in the past. Mother leaves very strict instructions. She wants her house in one piece when she gets back and all goes very well for the first two days. But then Minal let's the school guinea pig, Albert, that they're taking care of over spring break, out of his cage and all heck breaks loose..... Lauren Child's sequel to Clarice Bean, That's Me will have both old fans and new readers jumping for joy and laughing out loud at the antics of this "typical" family. Narrated by Clarice, this charming and hilarious story really captures the essence of the grade school mind as she tells everyone about the terrible chain of events that was set off when Albert got away. Ms Child's delightful prose is almost outdone by her creative cartoon and collage artwork and even the text is artistic, changing fonts and size and wrapping itself in and around the illustrations. Perfect for youngsters in grades 1-4, Clarice Bean, Guess Who's Babysitting is a rip roarin' good time the whole family will enjoy.

FULL-ON FUN
.

More fun in the Bean household! Mom has to go to New York, and Dad has to go away on IMPORTANT BUSINESS. So who looks after Clarice, Marcie, Minal, Kurt and Grandad while Mom and Dad are away? As a last resort Mom calls in Uncle Ted. After only two days of normality chaos takes over.

Albert the Guinea Pig gets lost, Minal has an accident and Grandad wanders off.

Lauren Child's book is a long way removed from the pastel coloured world of traditional kid's books. The illustrations are full on, with clever use of photomontage with text and type-fonts that go every which way.

Most children will get a kick out of the very stylish layout and quirky humour. You can really believe that young Clarice wrote this book. All young readers will certainly enjoy her latest story.

Book is more suited for infants - not toddlers
I loved the book to look at, but it was clear from the start that my son - who is nearly two - was already too old. I'm going to use it as a guide, somewhat, but wish I would have had it when he was still an infant. At 22 months he is relatively adept in the water anyway and at the same time old enough to have some typical water apprehension.

The exercises are also not real appropriate for a toddler because they are just too wiggly. When he weighed less than 20 pounds it would have been much more feasible to do the steps but now at a strong 30 pounds and a mind of his own this isn't the best book for us.

However, I intend to get this book for new moms. What a great shower gift!

Great Pictures!
I loved the book. Pictures are great and have really good tips. My 25 months old baby is already swimming by himself!. I bought a second copy for a friend.

Great!
Took a risk and bought this book before there were any reviews here. The book is great; very high quality. I was worried that it was only 48 pages... but they are 48 very well executed pages with amazing photographs and clear descriptions of the 9 month long water baby program.

I am a Canadian living in Chile, and bringing a baby to the pool shocked the very conservative Chileans. But when they saw the pictures in the book, and my 2 month old son swimming underwater, suddenly all the babies in our condo were in the pool.

Daughters & Mothers
Such a wonderful, heart-warming book of the relationships between daughters and their mothers. I have two sisters that adore their mother and after seeing this book, my mother started to cry. You can see it in the eyes of the characters. Great photos and story telling!

inspirational
This inspirational book about strong, loving women describes the caring and giving between daughters and mothers. The wonderful photos and rich stories make me thankful for my own particular roots. My mom gave this book to me and I will always treasure it. A lovely piece.

A wonderful book!
The stories in Daughters & Mothers are heart-warming, thoughtful, inspirational and educational. And, the photographs are amazing, too! This book was given to me as a gift, and I have enjoyed reading the stories time and again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It's a great gift to give!

P.S. Check out Girlfriends, also by Jayne Wexler and Lauren Cowen. It's even better!
