good for all ages
my homeroom teacher read this book to us to teach us to always look on the bright side of life. i laughed my head off. did i mention im 13? i thought this was the funniest book! everybody would like this book!

Good for teachers teaching cause and effect
If you are a teacher and teach cause and effect, this book is great. when you are finished, you can have the kids write a story as a class based on their own fortuantely events. It's great!

Beautifully illustrated cliffhanger from 1964
Ned has been invited to a surprise party in Florida. Unfortunately, Ned lives in New York. So it begins...as Ned travels in an airplane only to have the plane explode as he falls from the sky in a parachute that has a hole in it. Ned is fine. This book is illustrated beautfully and simply. The word "Fortunately" tells the tale of how Ned extricates himself from each unfortunate event. The word "unfortunately" begins the unfortunate event. The fortunate pages are in color and the unfortunate pages in black and white. Of course Ned ultimately ends up at the party. He is never hurt although he comes close. After receiving this book, I read it before sitting down with my 4 year old son. The "unfortunate" pages provoked a LOT of discussion about what was happening to Ned and would he be hurt. This type of "cliffhanger" is entirely new to my 4 year old who reads only books, so far, where nobody is hurt or injured. Fortunately, Ned is "saved" by turning the page and all ends well. I think this book scares my son and I have put it away for now. This book is probably better for children older than 3 or 4.

My favorite book: It's like coming home!
Thirteen is my favorite book of all times. I have had it sinceit was published in 1975 and it has moved with me for 25 years and 11moves! I have thought to streamline my life and get rid of some things, but this book is a necessity in my household! It inspires and comforts--it is a work of art!

magical journey in a unique visually fantastic format...
My father gave me this book when I was ten (the year it was published) and it has been my most treasured childhood book since...into adulthood. Through countless moves, without conscious effort, this book has stayed with me, and always delights me each time I open it. It is always relevant in it's irrelevance...you will see. Now that I have a child and neices, etc. I have been trying to find it to give to others...I am amazed to discover through reading other accounts at Amazon that this "unknown" little gem has had such impact on other readers. If you can find it, hesitate not a moment - buy it and share it.

A visual treat of the highest quality for kids of all ages.
This picture book may be the cleverest ever created. "Thirteen" is 13 stories told simultaneously on 13 pages, each story told by pictures which change and evolve as you turn the pages. Many of the stories are circular or contain hidden surprises.

This is the book that I have given most often as a gift, not only to kids but also adults, who may enjoy it even more than kids!

The Best Book On Sign For Young Children
This is the best book I have found to teach young children about Sign Language. I have used it with my own children and with my Girl Scout troop. The signs are easy to copy for young children and they enjoy learning Sign Language. Many of the books on Sign Language are too hard for young children this is simple. If you want a book that helps introduce signing this it.

Used by our Youth Minister at Church for Choir
I have had this book for years and loaned it to our youth minister. He found it to be a favoriate with the youth and would like to have several copies. They have used it in preparing performances such as "The Lord's Prayer", etc. One of the best and very simple to learn hand language.

Excellent. One of the best sign language books I have seen.
I borrowed this book from our public library and have used it with my 4-year-old daughter. She is very bright and this book has greatly contributed to her learning experience. I hope that the book will be published again soon, because I would like very much to add it to her library. It is much easier for a child to learn this type of thing than it is for an adult, because they can focus their attention more completely on what they are doing. I think that the book is wonderful.

This book is wonderful!!!
My son, who just turned one, ADORES this book. He asks that we read it to him constantly, and has since the day we brought it home 4 months ago. I am now ordering a second and a third copy - a spare for us because the first is so dog-eared, and one for a friend to share with her daughter. It is a beautiful, playful, fun story with lots of word-play to entertain and encourage kids who are just getting verbal, a great message for older kids, and a fun read even for adults. My whole family gives it a big thumbs up! The only drawback I can think of is that Amazon offers only the paperback - our first copy is hardcover, and it's already toast so I'm not sure how it'll hold up. I wish they made this as a board book!

A Charming Valentine and a witty mediation on love
This playful bagatelle is vintage Charlip and is as good a valentine for adults as it is a children's book. A mother is putting her child to bed with the usual endearments which become, through loving word-play, more and more outrageous and more and more serious. This is a fabulous little book for everyone.

An appreciated encore printing
I remember these Victorian silhouette illustrations on bold backgrounds from when I was young, and when we found it recently at the library I discovered that it has as much appeal to my four year old today as it did (and still does) to me. The objects the doctor extracts from a young boy's dramatically bloated stomach get progressively more outrageous as they go along, and the story ends with a funny twist. I'm delighted to find this 1966 Berkeley, CA classic available again in print.

HEARTFELT
This is an absolutely lovely book. The rhymes are poignant and sparkling. Lovely illustrations. This takes me back to a time when children's story books had imagination and heart, rather than just cleverness.

ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS!
In 1964 I found this book in a library in Augsburg, Germany while searching for a way to explain to my 5 year old daughter the sudden death of her 3 month old brother. I checked the book out and read it to her that afternoon. The simple story of a group of children finding the dead bird and burying it with a little, sincere and heart-felt ceremony was comforting to her, and with the last picture of the children playing nearby and falling leaves beginning to cover the little grave she was able to understand the finality of death. She said, "And we'll always be able to remember Matt when we want to, won't we, Dad?" This is the only "real" Childrens' book about death that I have ever seen. It should be in every pre-school and kindergarten library; no, in every library!

The Dream Book by Margaret Wise Brown
A gently rhyming book of the dreams of a rabbit, horse, ...fish, bird,...little boy, little girl etc. And the reiterated reminder "Think of the world as it can seem,
Towards such a world first comes the dream."

The world can become a better place, but first we must dream the dream. A very timely reminder from a book written over 50 years ago

The Begining of Wonder
My introduction to this book was at an age when I had first begun to read. While I did read and enjoy the rhymes and word play, my imagination was captured by the images. The way they seemed to parrallel my simple understanding of the world around reinforced something that stayed with me for years. It must have been the begining of wonder at that time and this book, more than any other, gave me a point of depature for that adventure of mind and senses. As I grew older I treasured this book and kept it with me as I moved off to college. It was so precious to me that I gave it to the first great love of my life. She is gone and no longer has a place in my life, but Arm in Arm does. It represents a time when all was new and the world was as wonder filled as I allowed it to be. I greatly appreciate Remy creating this book and hope he gained as much from that process as I did from reading it. Needless to say, it will be the first book I read to my children and I hope that they read to themselves.

One of the best children's books I have ever read.
Everyone should have a book that lingers from their childhood, echoing through their life. For me, this book is Arm in Arm by Remy Charlip. I have often thought of the clever rhymes, pictures, and ideas that flow throughout the book. For children who are imaginative, creative, and curious, there could be no better gift. If you want to spur a love of poetry and literature in a young one, give them this book. If you want to amuse yourself, buy it for yourself. Make sure, however, that you keep it in a safe place; it's the sort of book you'll want to read over and over again!

Arm in Arm is a precious and life enhancing book for all.
My mom read this book to me when I was little in the late 1960's, and to this day it is one of my favorite books. I have cherished the original copy, moving from my mom's home to four other cities, always mindful of which box it's packed away in.

An original copy is a family heirloom--no joke. The way it made me laugh, and really sparked my imagination was incredible. Here's my favorite(quoted from memory and not verbatim):

(Picture a bunch of kids crammed into one bed) It's better to be in a warm bed on a cold day looking out at the cold snow than to be out in the cold snow on a cold day looking in at a warm bed.

Something like that. I loved this book. Please share it with your children. And if you have the opportunity, get an old copy because the paper stock was incredible and it was bound, but most of all, the illustrations were beautiful.

Beautiful and loving
The illustrations in this book are really gorgeous and the rhyme is simple and sweet. I really like the way it goes through the different parts of the baby that the mother loves. As my daughter gets older, it will be fun to make a game of naming off her body parts as we read through the rhyme. This is a nice book for parents to read to their new babies, but I think toddlers will really enjoy it too.

Wonderful story, well loved illustrations!
My 19 month old daughter loves this book, and brings it to me every night. The illustrations are fun for her to look at, and the text has us snuggling close throughout. A must for any parent who loves to hug and kiss their child!

A Simple, Loving Message
I'm in the process of adopting a baby girl from China. One of the things I so look forward to is reading to her and having a special bedtime book. A very dear friend purchased the "Sleepy Time Rhyme" for me and my future daughter in hopes that this would be what I was looking for. Well, I can't imagine a more beautiful message to send my daughter to sleep with. "Sleepy Time.." celebrates every part of the child. It's perfect for my little family because the thing I want my daughter to know as she drifts off to sleep is that, even though we are physically different from one another, I do love every part of her.

It's a strong but simple message.

[HINT: And it works if you sing it to "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"]
