An informative view of Early Life in Florida
I enjoyed this story about early life in Florida very much. The authors captured the essence of what the early settlers in Florida must have lived through. The story was fun and easy reading, and I am looking forward to the sequel.

This is a great book!!!!!
This book was very informative and entertaining. The authors did an excellent job of painting a vivid picture of what survival in Florida must have been like in its early beginnings. The Dover family is very likeable...I look forward to the sequel to this excellent book.

Very informative and entertaining historical fiction.
Fans of Patrick Smith will also delight in this novel revolving around the beginning of the cattle industry in Florida. The authors keep the reader constantly entertained with interesting characters and authentic historical facts. The story is very realistic and paints a very believable story of early Florida. As the writers weave a very interesting story, the reader can easily visualize the beauty of undisturbed nature. At the same time, the results of lawlessness are depicted but without graphic violence. Hopefully these new authors will soon provide us with another book. Meantime, readers will wait anxiously to find out what the future holds for the Dover family, their friends and their enemies.

Balti: Curry Cookbook

guarenteed authenticity
Unlike a lot of Indian cook books this delivers restaurant style recipes and techniques as opposed to traditional home cooking. It contains a very tasty basic balti spice mix and a selection of variations on the main balti theme. Not only does it have all this but also a good introduction to the basic Indian techniques such as bargar, bhuna and the like. An excellent introduction to Indian cooking, which includes a lot of revealing history of UK Indian restaurant cuisine. However some of the recipes tend to be a bit "samey" as they use the basic balti masala. This is a minor criticism of an excellent book. I also recommend the other Curry Club titles, especially the "Curry Bible".

A far better than average thriller!
Herb Chapman's "The Book of Cain" is easily the best suspense thriller I've read in a year, and one of the most impressive fiction debuts I can remember. The reason this book succeeds so well is deceptively simple: author Chapman obviously took the care to plot his story well, and it largely succeeds at avoiding the contrivances that undermine so many other thrillers.

Chapman knows the story is his book's strength, and he always plays to it. The writing style doesn't often stand out, but neither does it get in the way. A few scenes bog down along the way, but all in all Chapman--drawing from his real-life experience as a youth counsellor--has written a smart, lucid, and perceptive thriller that will hold your attention and stay with you long after you're done. Not as elegant as Thomas Harris, but nearly as nightmarish, "The Book of Cain" puts a bright spotlight on misery and the human capacity to do harm, and doesn't pretend to have all the answers.

Mr. Chapman should be proud of a job well done. With a minimum of fanfare, he's crafted a thriller that puts many of his undoubtedly higher paid and more profilic counterparts to shame.

excellent mystery
This is a great first novel. Quite accurate in psychological aspects. A little different as there were few "twists and turns" as it was more a "police procedural". The characters were well developed and believable and real. I am looking forward to his next. Well look for his website and see what is forthcoming. Long and held my attention. Very well written.

Excellent change of perspective on the serial murderer
This book was recommended to me by a friend and was well worth every penny I spent on it. It has more than the standard two or three main characters, yet each is well-drawn and believable. Normally, when I read a mystery, by the time I'm 75% of the way through it, my main goal is to determine "whodunnit". This book totally engrossed me, so that I paid as much attention to all the details of the tale at page 275 as I did at page 25. It also left me contemplating the legacy that various 'ripples' in our lives create in the world of those around us. I suspect that Mr. Chapman's book will remain on my bookshelf for many years to come.

Favourite Restaurant Curries

A pretty cool collection of hot recipes....
Like quite a few of Pat Chapmans other books, this one concentrates mostly on recipes, with a fairly sparse section on ingredients and methods. However, this is A Good Thing, if you already own one of the definative works such as the authors The Curry Bible. The work, therefore, stands on the strength of it's recipes. And it stands pretty tall on those. From the standards ( Chicken Madras ) to the downright yucky ( lambs brain curry ), the recipes are easy to follow, and as expected from this source, extremely tasty. Each recipe comes from a well-known curry house, mostly in the UK, but a few from the sub-continent, and the USA. Each is also accompanied with Pats' anecdote about the restaurant, which are frankly pretty tedious. Overall, an excellent, and pretty inexpensive collection of damn good recipes!

Excellent for beginners
This is a wonderful introduction to Indian food that I found quite by accident at my public library. I was looking for something with not too many choices, but good selection and this is it - three or four each of soups, vegetables, meat, chicken, sauces, and a couple of desserts. If you haven't done this before, get a small ELECTRIC spice grinder and make the curry powders and garam masala first - she give very good instructions - unless you have strong hands.
