Viva Guerrilla Girls!!
Reading this book changed my out-look on the world of art. This book shows how art can be used as a weapon and as a tool. The Guerrilla Girls, by use of posters, fight discrimination. The Guerrilla Girls show that feminism can be funny! A must read for men and women.

Excellent analysis of Women and Surrealism
Although the publication of "Women and Surrealism" by Whitney Chadwick in the 1980s brought about a larger appreciation of women involved in the movement, there is still a surprising shortage of material published about surrealist artists such as Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. "Mirror Images: Women, Surrealism, and Self Representation" offers a series of insightful essays on these and other artists' images and ideas of self. Most interestingly, many of the essays discuss the work of Surrealist "descendents," including Cindy Sherman and Louise Bourgeois. Overall, very well constructed and written, with essays by the leading scholars in this still under-appreciated area.

Extremely Useful Book
This book is an excellent overview of the lives and careers of some key Surrealist women artists - and it was a wake-up call for me, when I realised that, despite several years of tertiay study in the field of Art History, the only artists I knew anything about was Frida Kahlo.
A good summary of some neglected figures in art.

Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement
Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement contains interesting and useful biographical information, color illustrations and some of the major female contributors to the surrealist movement including Frieda Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, and Leonor Fini. Chadwick provides the reader with useful biographical information that may have influenced the artists work. Women Artists contains an easy to use index , a list of the illustrations and their location in the book, and a brief biography of each author. This book is a wonderful reference for research or for personal interest.

A Good But Incomplete Job on Romaine Brooks
This book presents itself as "comprehensive and definitive" on the art and life of Romaine Brooks but alas falls short of the goal. Sadly, if you've waited 25 plus years for a decent book on Brooks since the extemely inadequate "Thief of Souls" catalogue from the early 1970's and the wonderful "Between Me and Life" biography by Meryle Secrest, this new catalogue will disappoint. My problem with it is that while bragging that it reproduces "34 of the 40 nudes and portraits" Brooks painted-- why, oh why, couldn't they finish the job and reproduce the remaining six? Even if it is a catalogue to a touring show what harm would it have done to add 3 pages of color plates and include the portrait of Paul Morand, the 2nd D'Annunzio protrait, the Carl Van Vechten and so on? Additionally, the book's format lacks the grandeur of Brook's work as it has a small, blockly format. On the plus side the color reproduction is excellent for all but two of the pictures--the D'Annunzio has too much yellow in it, and "the Huntress" is too dark. How many years must we wait to see all of her work reproduced in one large format resplendent volume, preferably on mat paper, and, for some of the pictures, their frames included? Additionally, the two essays are fine but hardly "definitive" as both are heavily indebted to the Secrest biography which is still the most thorough job on Brooks and inexplicably still out-of-print after 25 years. Still if you love Brook's art this is a must have as there is nothing else. Don't miss the show!

Wordy!
This book does conatain some truly valuable information, unfortunately it is also full of so much useless information that you become completely overwhelmed.

Should be required Art History text book
The information in this book should be in every Art History 101 text book, but unfortunately it isn't! It does read like a good text book and there are lots of illustrations (although there could be lots more). Chadwick is in expert in her field. Anyone interested in Art History should know what this book covers...
