The Most Honest Writer-Larry Gatlin....
Books rarely hold my attention. Can't tell you how many I've started and put down. I started Larry Gatlin's book a few days ago and can't stop reading. Half-way thru the book, his re-telling of successes and failures have me grabbing for a kleenex every few pages. His reliance on God and coming back to God's grace are touching/inspiring. He gives God the credit for every moment that counts in his life that will connect to another open door (try to count how many times he writes, "another God moment.") His writing style is energetic, to the point, down to earth, honest - just as his personality is on stage. (I saw the Gatlin Brothers in concert in Kansas City 12/28/02). This book makes the reader rejoice as we watch him overcome alcoholism and substance abuse. Who wouldn't want Larry to win over these addictions, for his sake and his family's sake back home. He doesn't overdo the details but gives the full picture in few words. Keep the music coming Gatlin Brothers!

This book should still be in the stores!
I'm a Larry Gatlin fan. His book is written as well as his songs. I was captivated by his life story which he described in such down to earth, honest words. And it is so funny.
What a talent!

A MUST READ, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A GATLIN FAN!
I've been around the music business for the past 30 years, I have NEVER seen an artist be this honest and open about the rise and the fall of ones career. Larry lays it ALL on the line and this should serve as a wake up call for those that can not handle "life in the fast lane". Larry's story is 24KT solid gold. A real must read from someone who has certainly been there, done that.

A comprehensive look at the musical career of Johnny Cash.
This book, available May-June 1999, includes more than 2,600 song title entries and numbers some 1,005 pages in length. Each entry includes: composer, recording location, producer, session personnel, and the format (single, ep, lp, CD) of release. Most entries carry detailed annotations. Included in the book is a Foreword by Marty Stuart and a complete listing of liner notes, with contents, written by Cash for his CBS albums from 1958-1986. Cash kindly allowed their replication for this project. An index of some 70 pages details the contents of the song entries. This publication is meant to be an encyclopedia, of sorts, of the recorded works of a country legend.

A MUST FOR THE CASH FAN!
This is an excellent buy for any Cash fan. The photos are great, the poetry is beautiful, and the family history is more than adequate for getting a good feeling of where the man in black came from. The early promotional photos from Sun Records are just awesome and from reading the poetry it seems as though everyone in the Cash family has a knack for words. This book really has it all, insight into the lives of each Cash family member, poems written for mothers, fathers, grandfathers, a family tree, and even photos of former spouse's children! Just a great book to have.

Excellent fictional account of the life of Paul the apostle

Billy Graham himself encouraged Johnny Cash to finish this book when Cash had started it and then put it aside, feeling like he could not finish it. Graham recommended Cash finish it for good reason, as it gives the reader an insight into the life of Saul, and later Paul the apostle, that you cannot possibly get from the bible itself.

Well written, this book, which was titled to be a play on words of Cash's autobiography titled Man in Black, draws you into Paul's life from a fictional 1st person perspective, and is at all times totally believable and spiritually uplifting. I highly recommend this book for Christians and non-Christians alike. Unfortunately, it is currently out of print (2/97)

Three Really Great Short Stories
This set contains two now out of print audio books: "Four Card Draw" and "The Turkey Feather Riders." All three are well done with a great cast of characters and special effects. The audio is crisp and clear, easily heard in an automobile's noisy environment.

Four Card Draw. Louis L'Amour starts this audio volume with a short discourse on period books about the old west. "Four Card Draw" is told first person by Allen Ring, a gambler who wins the Red Rock Ranch in Arizona. He is told the ranch is haunted by someone who was murdered there. That someone was one of the three Haslet brothers, owners of a neighboring ranch, who are out for revenge. Allen walks right into the middle of a frying pan and ends up fighting for his life!

Riding For The Brand. Jed Asberry wins a poker game only to find himself robbed by the angry losers. They dump him in the desert with no clothes, left to die. Days later, on his last legs, he stumbles across three recently killed people (two men and a woman)... in the middle of the desert. Taking clothes, guns, and papers from one of the men, Jed becomes Micheal Latch. Micheal was on his way to inherit a ranch, so Jed decides to assume this role. He finds himself up to his neck in serious shooting trouble as someone else is willing to murder to get the property!

The Turkey Feather Riders. Louis L'Amour starts this story by giving a short discourse on cowboys and the cattle business as it was in the 1860's through 1880's (and now). Jim Sandefer is the forman for a New Mexico ranch. His boss, Grey Bowen, makes a sudden visit (after years of being away) with his daughter, Elaine, and some new guests: Rose and Lee Martin. Grey wants to marry Rose, but Jim discovers that she and her son are up to something that doesn't smell right! Then the shooting begins!

Well worth the purchase price. Run Time: 180 minutes.

The house of Cash
I, like you all, am a huge Johnny Cash fan. He walks the line between a woeful crooner and a comedian. As Terri Grosse on "Fresh Air" explained, he combines the sacred and the profane. Cash retorts that a friend of his wrote a song that described him as "A walking contradiction, one part truth and another part fiction". This is Cash's second autobiography, his first being "Man in Black". This is the far better of the two, and I feel that Cash is more intimate in this book, but I also think that he holds back too much.

This book is one of an aging man, reflecting on his remembrances. It is based on different locations that Cash writes the book from, his different houses and his tour bus. He tells stories about the early days of Sun Records, he talks about his friends and famous aquaitances. At times it seems like he's name dropping, but not for self promootion, but historic preservation. He speaks of who he thinks is truly great in the history of Country music.

I guess that the San Quentin Prison record has just been remastered and rereleased, Cash is suffering from a nerve disorder but is still recording on American records. I guess that three topical compilations have been released one focusing on Love, one on God, and one on Murder. I'm glad that Cash left this record (eventhough he's a better songwriter than a book writer) of his thoughts and stories and passions. He's one of the great musicians of the twentieth century.

A must read for any Johnny Cash or music fan!
As a big fan of Johnny Cash I could not resist reading his autobiography. In no way what so ever was I let down by this amazing book. It combines stories of his life, memories with friends, family, and music giants, and provides deep spiritual inspiration. His memories are truely enjoyable and entertaining, throughout the book he touches on experiences with such people as Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and many more. He also gives delves into his constant battles with drug addiction and how he was able to overcome the affliction. This book gives you a good idea what it was like to be Johnny Cash, and who better to tell the story than Johnny Cash himself.

Long live the Man in Black
In his new autobiography, Cash touches us with his heart, strengthens us with his courage, challenges us with his honesty, and renews us with his faith. Now, as Cash faces another chapter of his life, we ask if he will be able to use the same non-relenting force of character he is so well known for to overcome Parkinson's Disease. But this question is unfounded, for as his novel proves, Johnny Cash is the man who bows to no one. So during this time of trial, as we eagerly await to hear him play again, we simply say "We love you Johnny Cash, country music legend extraordinaire."

To Much Attention Put On Elvis
I was there. I heard the people around Shreveport talk about the Hayride. Elvis was no big asset to the show. There are to many errors in the book for anyone to take it as truth. If he is going to take credit for anything he should also take credit for causing the show to loose it's place in Country Music.

Lacks credibility
Mr. Logan says Faron Young had a series of relatively brief marriages. Actually, Faron Young had only one marriage and it ended in divorce after 32 years. If Horace Logan is so wrong there, how can I believe anything else he says?

Educational first-hand account of the Hayride
This volume was originally published under the title, "Elvis, Hank, and Me: Making Musical History on the Louisiana Hayride," and it's a tremendously more accurate title than the abbreviated "Louisiana Hayride Years." Although Logan was the guiding light of the show, serving as its creator and producer during its first ten years, his book focuses more on Elvis and Hank, than on the Hayride itself.

His insights into these two megastars, each at the very beginning of their climb to fame, are interesting, to be sure, but there was so much more to be covered. In addition to the two icons, numerous other country acts began or expanded their stardom on the Hayride, and though Logan provides some interesting anecdotes about Johnny and Jack, Kitty Wells, Faron Young, Slim Whitman, Webb Pierce, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash and George Jones, he never really delves into the Hayride itself.

His dishing on the Grand Ole Opry, while probably close to the bone, is a poor substitute for a deeper discussion of how the Hayride itself worked. There's some interesting analysis of why the Hayride kept giving up its stars to Nashville, but having been written so long after-the-fact, the of-the-moment accounts focus more on the stars than the show. One never really gets a feel for the Hayride's own arc of fame, nor the nuts-and-bolts of how the show (both stage and radio) operated.

That said, and even with the factual errors noted elsewhere, this is a worthwhile first-hand account of a seminal program that fostered one of the great transitional periods in country music's history.

mysticism, poetry, and religion
Kahlil Gibran's "Eye of the Prophet" is a collection of meditations on religion and life. Gibran's writing is both mystical and lyrical as he comments on truths he's learned throughout life. Although he believes in an inexplainable God, Gibran also posits that religion has a practical side. For example, "to be closer to God, be closer to people." Although God exceeds our understanding, we can approach Him through other human beings. In this book Gibran also explains that people often obscure their true, divine, selves; this leads to misery. This concept is explored in the following story: "I saw a young man trying to seduce the heart of a young girl with tender words, while the true feelings of both were half asleep and they were very far from their divine nature." The same theme of human nature being basically good, despite self-corruption, continues throughout the book. Gibran's ideas will likely not shock those readers who are familiar with mainstream religions and the Bible: Gibran himself drew heavily on the Bible. Although I enjoyed the book, I found I had to break it up and read small sections at a time. Too much "Eye of the Prophet" at once made me feel simultaneously overwhelmed and skeptical. Overall, I found the book provocative and beautifully-written, if at times a little repetitive.
